MicroRNA-34a (miR-34a) behaves as a tumor suppressor by decreasing the expression of oncogenes involved in multiple carcinogenic pathways. Intravenous delivery of miR-34a mimics has been investigated in clinical trials as a potential treatment for advanced cancers; however, the effect of miR-34a on cancer immune surveillance is controversial. In the current study, we found that miR-34a plays a dual role in the regulation of major histocompatibility complex class I-related sequence B (MICB) protein, a ligand of the NKG2D receptor.

Introduction: Chondromyxoid fibrotherma (CMF) is a rare benign cartilage tumor that occurs more frequently in young males at the age of 20 to 30. It occurs more frequently on long bones, but rarely involves craniofacial bones.

Case Presentation: This study mainly introduced a 30-year-old male with CMF of zygomatic bone.

The pollution of natural waters and sediments with metals derived from acid mine drainage (AMD) is a global environmental problem. However, the processes governing the transportation and transformation of AMD metals such as Cd in mountainous areas are poorly understood. In this study, the Cd isotopic composition and Cd concentration of river water and sediments (16 sampling sites) from an AMD-affected river in southern China were determined.

Hereditary hearing loss is a common clinical neurosensory disorder in humans and has a high demand for genetic screening. Current screening techniques using peripheral blood or dried blood spots (DBSs) are invasive. Therefore, this study aims to develop a noninvasive and accurate detection method for eight hotspot deafness-associated mutations based on buccal swab and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR).

Multicolor mechanoluminescence (ML) was first realized by using the stable organic blue ML emitter N-phenylcarbazole as the host matrix. It is claimed that a good ML host should have a moderate melting point and be able to dissolve or disperse organic dyes but maintain high ML activity and crystallinity. This strategy is versatile and can avoid difficult molecular design and troublesome chemical synthesis.

Droplet microfluidics has attracted significant interests in functional microcapsule synthesis, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, cosmetics and biomedical research. The low variability of performing chemical reactions inside droplets could benefit from improved homogeneity and reproducibility. Therefore, accurate and convenient methods are needed to monitor dynamic droplet generation processes.

In order to understand the characteristics of the distribution of sediment total phosphorus (TP) and phosphorus fractions in the mainstream sediments in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) after impounding the water level to 175 m, 13 surface sediment samples were collected from the Wujiang to Maoping sections in October 2010. The physico-chemical properties, including organic matter content, particle grain size distribution, and major mineral analysis, as well as total phosphorus and its fractions in the sediment, were determined. Moreover, the relationships among phosphorus fractions, organic matter contents, and particle grain size were discussed, and the effect of the impoundment on sediment phosphorus accumulation and bioavailability was also evaluated.

Chronic inflammation is a key contributor to obesity-related insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D). NLRP3 inflammasome activation plays an important role in impairing insulin signaling and insulin sensitivity. Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived cytokine that has been shown to promote insulin sensitivity and exert anti-inflammatory properties, yet the detailed mechanism is still unclear.

After the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the hydrological situation of the reservoir has changed greatly. The concentration and distribution of typical persistent organic pollutants in water and sediment have also changed accordingly. In this study, the concentration, distribution and potential sources of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 6 phthalic acid esters (PAEs) during the water drawdown and impoundment periods were investigated in water and sediment from the TGR.

Objective: To explore the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor 165 (VEGF )-loaded porous poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds on the osteogenic differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs).

Methods: The VEGF -loaded porous PCL scaffolds (written, Sf-g/VEGF) were fabricated through a combination of solvent casting/salt leaching and a thermal-induced phase separation technique and then observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The release kinetics was determined by ELISA kit.

The aim of the present study was to determine the expression profile of microRNA 638 (miR-638) and sex-determining region Y-box 2 (SOX2) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to investigate their association with clinicopathological features and survival. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis was used to investigate miR-638 and SOX2 expression in 78 patients with HCC. Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses were performed in order to determine SOX2 protein expression in HCC samples.

Simple N-phenylcarbazole (NPC) could readily form brightly mechanofluorescent crystals with mechanically touch-sensitive response, regardless of crystallization methods. NPC with room-temperature photophosphorescence did not exhibit mechano-phosphorescence, signifying that the excitation modes could play an important role in affecting light-emitting processes.

Age-related muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) is the leading cause for disability in aged population, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we identify a novel role for the secreted glycoprotein Dickkopf 3 (Dkk3) in sarcopenia. Forced expression of Dkk3 in muscles in young mice leads to muscle atrophy.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and olfactory dysfunction. Recently, mutations in SOX10, a well-known causative gene of Waardenburg syndrome (WS), have been identified in a few KS patients with additional developmental defects including hearing loss. However, the understanding of SOX10 mutation associates with KS and other clinical consequences remains fragmentary.

Unlabelled: Skeletal muscle regeneration is a complex process orchestrated by multiple steps. Recent findings indicate that inflammatory responses could play central roles in bridging initial muscle injury responses and timely muscle injury reparation. The various types of immune cells and cytokines have crucial roles in muscle regeneration process.

Preeclampsia is a common pregnancy-specific disorder characterized by elevated blood pressure and proteinuria. Activation of the maternal immune system and impaired placental angiogenesis are thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. TLR9 (Toll-like receptor 9) plays a role in innate immunity, defending the organism against infection.

Background/aims: The increasing prevalence of ionizing radiation exposure has inevitably raised public concern over the potential detrimental effects of ionizing radiation on male reproductive system function. The detection of drug candidates to prevent reproductive system from damage caused by ionizing radiation is urgent. We aimed to investigate the protective role of taurine on the injury of mouse spermatocyte-derived cells (GC-2) subjected to ionizing radiation.

Adult rhabdomyomas (ARMs) are rare solitary benign neoplasms of the head and neck, and multifocal ARMs are even rarer. Owing to the low incidence and scanty knowledge of this peculiar entity, several patients have been reported to be misdiagnosed or overtreated. This report describes a patient with multifocal ARMs with as many as 10 synchronous lesions.
