Objective: Computer-assisted three-dimensional navigation often guides spinal instrumentation. Optical topographic imaging (OTI) offers comparable accuracy and significantly faster registration relative to current navigation systems in open posterior thoracolumbar exposures. We validate the usefulness and accuracy of OTI in minimally invasive spinal approaches.

Purpose: Planning osteotomies is a task that surgeons do as part of standard surgical workflow. This task, however, becomes more difficult and less intuitive when a robot is tasked with performing the osteotomy. In this study, we aim to provide a new method for surgeons to allow for highly intuitive trajectory planning, similar to the way an attending surgeon would instruct a junior.

We characterize shifts in the use of spinal CAN over time and across disciplines in a single-payer health system, and assess the impact of intra-operative CAN on trainee proficiency across Canada.
Methods: A prospectively maintained Ontario database of patients undergoing spinal instrumentation from 2005 to 2014 was reviewed retrospectively.
Soybean lipoxygenase (SLO) has served as a prototype for understanding the molecular origin of enzymatic rate accelerations. The double mutant (DM) L546A/L754A is considered a dramatic outlier, due to the unprecedented size and near temperature-independence of its primary kinetic isotope effect, low catalytic efficiency, and elevated enthalpy of activation. To uncover the physical basis of these features, we herein apply three structural probes: hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry, room-temperature X-ray crystallography and EPR spectroscopy on four SLO variants (wild-type (WT) enzyme, DM, and the two parental single mutants, L546A and L754A).

We used Gnat2 (Gnat2) mice, a genetic mouse model of cone dysfunction to investigate the influence of cone signaling in ocular refractive development and myopia susceptibility in mice. Refractive development under normal visual conditions was measured for Gnat2 and age-matched Gnat2 mice, every 2 weeks from 4 to 14 weeks of age.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a multistep process important for invasion and metastasis of CRC. Ensuring the efficacy of drug development to treat stingray injuries can be assisted by the knowledge of the venom composition. Here we performed a detailed transcriptomic characterization of the venom gland of the South American freshwater stingray .

The resultant optical coherent tomography images could then be averaged for speckle noise reduction and simultaneously analyzed for flow rate measurement. The performance of the proposed technique was verified by both phantom and in vivo experiments.

A 45 year-old male with right-sided neurological symptoms of emergent large vessel occlusion was treated with same-session angioplasty and mechanical thrombectomy of the respective lesions. The complete neurological recovery and radiological investigations are chronicled herein, and a review of the state of tandem occlusion management is discussed.

To load drugs, an -SH containing linker, 3-mercaptopropanohydrazide, was designed and synthesized. It enabled the silver carriers to load and release doxorubicin (Dox) in a pH-sensitive pattern.

Additionally, animal research indicates activation of rod pathways and circadian rhythms may influence eye growth. In children, objective measures of personal light exposure, recorded by wearable light sensors, have been used to examine the effects of bright light exposure on myopia.

Despite the obvious benefits of surgical navigation, surgeon adoption remains relatively low due to long setup and registration times, steep learning curves, and workflow disruptions. We introduce an experimental navigation system utilizing optical topographical imaging (OTI) to acquire the 3D surface anatomy of the surgical cavity, enabling visualization of internal structures relative to exposed surface anatomy from registered preoperative images.

Background: Podocyte injury is the hallmark of proteinuric kidney diseases, such as FSGS and minimal change disease, and destabilization of the podocyte's actin cytoskeleton contributes to podocyte dysfunction in many of these conditions. Although agents, such as glucocorticoids and cyclosporin, stabilize the actin cytoskeleton, systemic toxicity hinders chronic use. We previously showed that loss of the kidney-enriched zinc finger transcription factor Krüppel-like factor 15 (KLF15) increases susceptibility to proteinuric kidney disease and attenuates the salutary effects of retinoic acid and glucocorticoids in the podocyte.

Although emerging evidence has highlighted the role of key transcriptional regulators in mitochondrial biogenesis, little is known about the regulation of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase assembly in the podocyte under diabetic conditions. We recently reported a critical role of the zinc finger Krüppel-like factor 6 (KLF6) in maintaining mitochondrial function and preventing apoptosis in a proteinuric murine model.

To resolve this issue, we have developed novel fluorescent nanoprobes that are highly selective for soluble MMP-2. Herein, MMP-2-responsive nanoprobes were prepared by immobilizing fluorescent fusion proteins on nickel ferrite nanoparticles via the His-tag nickel chelation mechanism.

Micro-ultrasound improves spatial resolution over conventional ultrasound imaging from millimeter to micrometer, but compromises depth penetration. This trade-off is sufficient during an open surgery in which the bone is removed and theultrasound probe can be placed into the surgical cavity.

Methods And Materials: The cohort consisted of 279 de novo spinal metastases in 145 consecutive patients treated with 24 Gy in 2 SBRT fractions, identified from a prospective single-institution database. The endpoints were overall survival (OS), imaging-based local failure (LF), and cumulative risk of vertebral compression fractures (VCF).
The identification of root caries and calculus on tooth roots is of increasing importance with our aging population. Exposed root surfaces are often impacted by erosion, abrasion, calculus and staining which can make the identification and management of caries challenging. Identification of dental calculus on root surfaces and verification of its removal is also important for patient education and to decrease susceptibility to caries and periodontal disease.

Although initial podocyte injury resulting in activation of STAT3 signals GEC proliferation in both diseases, mechanisms regulating this are unknown. Here, we show that the loss of Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4), a zinc-finger transcription factor, enhances GEC proliferation in both RPGN and FSGS due to dysregulated STAT3 signaling.
