Background: Historically, malaria due to Plasmodium vivax has been epidemic in Henan Province, China, with Anopheles sinensis as the main vector. The most effective measures to prevent malaria transmission are based on vector control through the use of insecticides. However, insecticides exert a strong selective pressure on mosquito populations for insecticide resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • Plasmodium falciparum malaria poses a significant health risk globally, leading to research on the PfCSP protein as a potential vaccine target despite its genetic variability affecting vaccine effectiveness.
  • The study analyzed blood samples from 287 Chinese migrant workers returning from Africa, identifying key genetic variations in the PfCSP gene, including notable mutations and a high level of nucleotide diversity.
  • Findings indicated that while certain regions of the PfCSP gene were conserved, others showed signs of positive selection and moderate genetic differentiation between various African populations, providing insights for vaccine development.

One Health is a collaborative, multi-sectoral, trans-disciplinary approach with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes by recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and the environment and determining how this relates to the control of infectious diseases such as malaria, schistosomiasis and so on. Malarias caused by Plasmodium that commonly infects female Anopheles mosquitoes, which feed on human blood and act as a disease vector. It has been a worldwide important public health problem from ancient times.

Significant progress has been made for face detection from normal images in recent years; however, accurate and fast face detection from fisheye images remains a challenging issue because of serious fisheye distortion in the peripheral region of the image. To improve face detection accuracy, we propose a light-weight location-aware network to distinguish the peripheral region from the central region in the feature learning stage. To match the face detector, the shape and scale of the anchor (bounding box) is made location dependent.

In July of 2012, mass infections with Paragonimus species were detected in the Henan province sickening 11 of 51 people. In May 2011, these individuals had participated in an excursion during which freshwater crabs were caught and served after being toasted. Before the group infections with Paraginimus species was confirmed, 5 of the 11 patients had been misdiagnosed as tuberculosis (TB) and treated with an anti-TB drug regimen for six months.

Objective: To understand and analyze the epidemic status of human intestinal parasitic diseases in the ecological region of the Qinba Mountains in Henan Province, so as to provide the evidence for the control of the diseases in this region.

Methods: According to the methods of , 26 survey spots were selected in 8 counties (cities) in ecological regions of Qinba Mountains in Henan Province in 2015. After collecting the human fecal samples, the eggs of intestinal helminthes were detected with the modified Kato-Katz thick smear method, the species of of the hookworm egg-positive samples were identified with the tube fecal culture method, the eggs of were detected by using the adhesive tape method in children aged 3 to 6 years, and the cyst and trophozoite of intestinal protozoa were examined by iodine staining.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on the genetic diversity of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Henan, China, which has seen a significant decline in cases since the 1970s due to government efforts and healthcare initiatives aimed at elimination.
  • - Researchers analyzed 32 P. vivax isolates collected from 2008 to 2011, finding that all were of the VK210 type but displayed variations that resulted in eight different sub-types, with HN7 and HN3 being the most common.
  • - The results indicate a relatively conserved population of P. vivax parasites, providing valuable baseline data for future malaria control efforts and helping to identify potential new cases based on genetic differences.

Background: The spleen plays a pivotal role in the rapid clearance of parasitized red blood cells in patients with falciparum malaria after artemisinin treatment. Prolonged parasite clearance can be found in patients who have had a splenectomy, or those with hemoglobin abnormalities and/or reduced immunity, which are all distinguishable from artemisinin resistance. This paper reports on a case of prolonged parasite clearance in a Chinese splenectomized patient with falciparum malaria imported from Nigeria.

  • The study aimed to analyze the genetic sequence of the PoTRA gene from Plasmodium ovale in malaria cases imported to Henan Province in 2015.
  • Blood samples from 22 malaria patients were collected, and methods like DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and sequencing were used to identify the subspecies and analyze genetic differences.
  • Results showed two subspecies, P. ovale walikeri and P. ovale curtisi, with P. ovale curtisi having three genetic types and P. ovale wallikeri having two, highlighting significant genetic diversity in the PoTRA gene.

Objective: To analyze Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistant transporter (Pfcrt) gene polymorphism in imported falciparum malaria cases in Henan Province in 2015.

Methods: Blood samples were collected from 132 cases of imported falciparum malaria in Henan Province in 2015. DNA was extracted from the samples, and the Pfcrt was amplified by nested PCR using specific primers.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study in Henan Province reviewed malaria-related deaths from 2010 to 2015, finding that all 14 victims were adult males who contracted the disease while living in malaria-prone areas in Africa.
  • - The majority were misdiagnosed and experienced delays in receiving treatment, averaging 6.5 days between the onset of symptoms and an accurate diagnosis.
  • - The study emphasizes the need for better health education on malaria and enhanced training for healthcare professionals to improve diagnosis and treatment, aiming to reduce future deaths from imported malaria cases.

Background: Anti-malarial drug resistance is a primary public health problem. Haplotypes of pfcrt gene have been implicated to be molecular markers of chloroquine (CQ) resistance. This study aims to explore the prevalence of polymorphisms in pfcrt in Plasmodium falciparum-infected patients imported from Africa in Henan province.

In recent years, there has been a substantial increase of imported Plasmodium vivax incidence in Henan Province. As China is in a pre-elimination phase, the surveillance of imported malaria is essential, but there is no good way to distinguish imported cases from indigenous cases. This paper reports a case of a 39-year-old man who acquired P.
