Purpose: Tonsillectomy is one of the most common ambulatory procedures performed in children worldwide, with around 40,000 procedures performed in Canada every year. Although a prior systematic review indicated a clear role for dexamethasone as an analgesic adjunct, the quantity effect on opioid consumption is unknown. In the current systematic review with meta-analysis, we hypothesized that the use of dexamethasone reduces perioperative opioid consumption in pediatric tonsillectomy but does not increase rates of postoperative hemorrhage.

Tryptophan (Trp) has been shown to regulate immune function by modulating gut serotonin (5-HT) metabolism and signaling. However, the mechanisms underlying the microbial modulation of gut 5-HT signaling in gut inflammation with gut microbiota dysbiosis require further investigation. Here, we investigated the effects of Trp supplementation on the composition and metabolism of the gut microbiome and 5-HT signaling-related gut immune function using a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model coupled with antibiotic exposure.

The manipulation of multiple transcription units for simultaneous and coordinated expression is not only key to building complex genetic circuits to accomplish diverse functions in synthetic biology, but is also important in crop breeding for significantly improved productivity and overall performance. However, building constructs with multiple independent transcription units for fine-tuned and coordinated regulation is complicated and time-consuming. Here, we introduce the Multiplex Expression Cassette Assembly (MECA) method, which modifies canonical vectors compatible with Golden Gate Assembly, and then uses them to produce multi-cassette constructs.

  • Antimony (Sb) is a harmful pollutant linked to cancer, prompting this study to explore its effects on non-enzymatic antioxidants and the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in zebrafish, a species closely related to humans.
  • Zebrafish were exposed to various doses of antimony in water over 7, 18, and 30 days, revealing that antimony accumulated primarily in the liver, with levels increasing the longer the exposure.
  • Findings showed that antimony exposure decreased total antioxidant capacity and specific antioxidants (vitamin C and E), while increasing cysteine levels, and compromised the BBB's structural integrity, allowing other substances to pass through, which could lead to cell damage.

  • - Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, were tested to see how accurately they provided guideline-based care for colon cancer in simulated clinical scenarios.
  • - Out of 108 responses, both LLMs correctly answered only 36% of the questions, with many responses missing vital information or containing inaccuracies.
  • - Clinician responses were much more concise compared to LLMs, which produced lengthy and sometimes unclear guidance, indicating a need for significant improvements before these tools can be used in clinical decision support.
