Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore abnormalities in the mesial temporal lobe of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) by analyzing seizure-onset patterns identified through stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG).
  • Fifty-one MTLE patients were divided into two groups (hypersynchronous (HYP) and low-voltage fast (LVF)) and their brain structures were compared to a control group using MRI and F-FDG-PET imaging.
  • Results showed distinct brain changes—LVF patients had amygdala enlargement and contralateral hippocampus hypermetabolism, while HYP patients showed significant hippocampal atrophy linked to worse outcomes; identifying these abnormalities could enhance diagnosis and treatment planning for MTLE

Background: At the intersection of neural monitoring and decoding, event-related potential (ERP) based on electroencephalography (EEG) has opened a window into intrinsic brain function. The stability of ERP makes it frequently employed in the field of neuroscience. However, project-specific custom code, tracking of user-defined parameters, and the large diversity of commercial tools have limited clinical application.

The results of many epidemiological studies suggest a bidirectional causality may exist between epilepsy and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the underlying molecular landscape linking these two diseases remains largely unknown. This study aimed to explore this possible bidirectional causality by identifying differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each disease as well as their intersection based on two respective disease-related datasets.

  • Thyroid hormones are vital for the development and functioning of the central nervous system, and there is a need for research on their potential role in epilepsy, a common neurological disorder.
  • A comprehensive analysis using GWAS data from two major consortia assessed the relationship between various thyroid functions and ten types of epilepsy through Mendelian randomization.
  • The results showed no significant causal link between thyroid hormone abnormalities and epilepsy types, as all findings did not pass the statistical significance threshold after correction.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a pediatric vasculitis of unknown etiology which is mainly associated with the development of coronary artery aneurysms. The etiology of KD seems to be multifactorial, but there is rare research on the association between KD and potential environmental risk factors. So, we would like to examine the correlation between KD and potential environmental risk factors in West China.

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a type of vasculitis with an unidentified etiology. Cathelicidin (LL-37) may be involved in the development of the KD process; therefore, further research to investigate the molecular mechanism of LL-37 involvement in KD is warranted.

Methods: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, NLRP3, and LL-37 in the sera of healthy subjects, children with KD, and children with pneumonia.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies show blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signals can be detected in white matter, suggesting functional connectivity (FC) exists in this area.
  • Using data from 16 epilepsy patients, researchers found a correlation between BOLD FC and intracranial EEG signals, indicating that white matter FC might reflect actual brain activity.
  • The study also revealed that structural connectivity in white matter correlates with functional synchronization, pointing to the potential of using white matter BOLD FC as a biomarker for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Substantial studies of human amygdala function have revealed its importance in processing emotional experience, autonomic regulation, and sensory information; however, the neural substrates and circuitry subserving functions have not been directly mapped at the level of the subnuclei in humans. We provide a useful overview of amygdala functional characterization by using direct electrical stimulation to various amygdala regions in 48 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy undergoing stereoelectroencephalography recordings. This stimulation extends beyond the anticipated emotional, neurovegetative, olfactory, and somatosensory responses to include visual, auditory, and vestibular sensations, which may be explained by the functional connectivity with cortical and subcortical regions due to evoked amygdala-cortical potentials.

Despite recent progress in the identification of mediators of podocyte injury, mechanisms underlying podocyte loss remain poorly understood, and cell-specific therapy is lacking. We previously reported that kidney and brain expressed protein (KIBRA), encoded by WWC1, promotes podocyte injury in vitro through activation of the Hippo signaling pathway. KIBRA expression is increased in the glomeruli of patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and KIBRA depletion in vivo is protective against acute podocyte injury.

Successful surgery on drug-resistant epilepsy patients (DRE) needs precise localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ). Previous studies analyzing this issue still face limitations, such as inadequate analysis of features, low sensitivity and limited generality. Our study proposed an innovative and effective SOZ localization method based on multiple epileptogenic biomarkers (spike and HFOs), and analysis of single-contact (MEBM-SC) to address the above problems.

Low-cycle fatigue, creep and creep-fatigue tests of TiAlNb-based alloy were carried out at 550 °C. Compared with low-cycle fatigue, a creep-fatigue hysteresis loop has larger area and smaller average stress. The introduction of creep damage will greatly reduce the cycle life, and change the fatigue crack initiation point and failure mechanism.
