Chenpi holds a rich history of both edible and medicinal applications worldwide, garnering increased attention from researchers in recent years due to its diverse physiological effects. While current research predominantly exploresed its chemical composition and physiological effects, there remains a notable gap in knowledge concerning its manufacturing, characteristic chemical substances, and the underlying mechanisms driving its physiological effects. In this review, the impacts of microbes on the manufacturing, biotransformation, and physiological effects of Chenpi were summarized, as well as the present status of product development.

Osthole, a natural coumarin found in various medicinal plants, has been previously reported to have neuroprotective effects. However, the specific mechanism by which Osthole alleviates dysmnesia associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective properties of Osthole against cognitive impairment in rats induced by D-galactose and elucidate its pharmacological mechanism.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, which has become a major public health problem. There are no effective therapeutic agents used to treat AD in clinic for the extremely complex pathogenesis. Here we identify Levistilide A (LA), one of the major active natural terpene lactone constituents from Chinese herbal medicine Angelicae sinensis and Chuanxiong Rhizoma, as a potent neuroinflammation inhibitor for neuroprotection and cognitive improvement of AD.

Background: As a major risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases, aging has become a heavy health care burden worldwide. Age-related decline in mitochondrial function and oxidative stress is strongly associated with neurodegeneration. The previous study demonstrated that Bushen-Yizhi formula (BSYZ), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, is effective in reducing neurodegeneration.

Pathology is the gold standard of clinical diagnosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) in pathology becomes a new trend, but it is still not widely used due to the lack of necessary explanations for pathologists to understand the rationale. Clinic-compliant explanations besides the diagnostic decision of pathological images are essential for AI model training to provide diagnostic suggestions assisting pathologists practice.

In this study, the anti-obesity mechanism of Ganpu tea (GPT) from the perspectives of microbiome, metabolome and transcriptome was investigated. GPT significantly reduced the high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced levels of inflammatory cytokines and the expansion of lipid droplets and white adipose tissue. GPT also improved HFD-induced gut microbiome imbalance by significantly reducing the proportion of Firmicutes to Bacteroidota.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are disorders characterized by degenerative degeneration of neurons and loss of their function. NDs have a complicated pathophysiology, of which neuroinflammation and neuronal death are significant factors. The inflammatory process known as pyroptosis ("fiery death") is caused by a family of pore-forming proteins called Gasdermins (GSDMs), which appears downstream from the activation of the inflammasome.

Intervention with natural products is becoming a promising obesity control strategy as healthy eating becomes increasingly popular. The present study aimed to prepare a citrus-based functional jelly (CFJ) from citrus by-products and investigate its bioactive effects in mice. The results of the CFJ preparation showed that the optimal formula of CFJ was 29.

With the growing popularity of the concept of healthy diet, modern obesity treatment is gradually shifting from surgical or pharmacological treatment to nutritional intervention. As a safe and effective measure, natural product interventions are a potential strategy of obesity management. The present study aimed to develop a kind of functional food rich in bioactive compounds (chenpi, kiwifruit, and pectin as raw materials) and investigate their bioactive effects on a mouse model.

Background: Medicarpin is a natural pterocarpan-type phytoalexin widely distributed in many traditional Chinese medicines, such as Astragali Radix. A previous study showed that Astragali Radix demonstrated promising protective effects in neurons. However, there is no reported study on the neuroprotective function and the underlying mechanism of Medicarpin.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive dysfunction. Kai-Xin-San (KXS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula that has been used to treat AD patients for over a thousand years in China. However, the therapeutic mechanisms of KXS for treating AD have not been fully explored.

The senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mouse model is a useful model for investigating the fundamental mechanisms involved in the age-related learning and memory deficits of Alzheimer's disease (AD), while the SAM/resistant 1 (SAMR1) mouse model shows normal features. Recent evidence has shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) may play an important role in AD pathogenesis. However, a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the function of AD-related lncRNAs and their associated nearby coding genes in AD is still lacking.
