Building upon an earlier study of heme-nitrosyl complexes (. , , 20496-20505), we examined a wide range of nonheme {FeNO} complexes (the superscript represents the Enemark-Feltham count) and two dinitrosyl iron complexes using DMRG-CASSCF calculations. Analysis of the wave functions in terms of resonance forms with different [π*(NO)] occupancies (where = 0-4 for mononitrosyl complexes) identified the dominant electronic configurations of {FeNO} and {FeNO} complexes as Fe-NO and Fe-NO, respectively, mirroring our previous findings on heme-nitrosyl complexes.

The present work investigates the long-term effects of continuous low dose-rate (20 mGy/day to total doses of 1-8 Gy) gamma-ray exposure on the hematopoietic cells of specific pathogen-free C3H/HeN mice. Peripheral white blood cell (WBC) counts decreased on days 206, 471, and 486, with no significant changes in red blood cell (RBC) and platelet (PLT) counts. The number of colony forming units (CFU-S and CFU-GM) in the bone marrow and spleen from irradiated mice decreased with increasing total dose on day-12 and day-7.

Purple bacteria possess two ring-shaped protein complexes, light-harvesting 1 (LH1) and 2 (LH2), both of which function as antennas for solar energy utilization for photosynthesis but exhibit distinct absorption properties. The two antennas have differing amounts of bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) ; however, their significance in spectral tuning remains elusive. Here, we report a high-precision evaluation of the physicochemical factors contributing to the variation in absorption maxima between LH1 and LH2, namely, BChl structural distortion, protein electrostatic interaction, excitonic coupling, and charge transfer (CT) effects, as derived from detailed spectral calculations using an extended version of the exciton model, in the model purple bacterium .

Purpose: We aimed to investigate whether prediction of liver fibrosis using two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) and vascular tree grading using superb microvascular imaging (SMI) are useful for postoperative follow-up in patients with biliary atresia (BA).

Methods: We retrospectively collected data from medical records of 134 patients who underwent ultrasound examination with 2D-SWE or SMI, including 13 postoperative patients with BA and 121 non-BA patients. We investigated the distribution of liver stiffness values with SWE and vascular tree grading with SMI and evaluated correlations between these findings and biochemical indices of liver fibrosis in postoperative BA patients.

Sulfur-bridged cationic diazulenomethenes were synthesized and exhibited high stability even under basic conditions due to the delocalization of positive charge over the whole π-conjugated skeleton. As a result of the effective delocalization and the absence of orthogonally oriented bulky substituents, the cationic π-conjugated skeletons formed a π-stacked array with short interfacial distances. A derivative with SbF as a counter anion formed a charge-segregated assembly in the crystalline state, rather than the generally favored charge-by-charge arrangement of oppositely charged species based on electrostatic interactions.

Herein, we report a zwitterionic acridinium amidate as a catalyst for the direct functionalization of aliphatic C-H bonds. Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is a therapeutic strategy for managing cardiogenic shock. However, it carries the risk of cardiogenic pulmonary edema, potentially leading to differential hypoxia. Chemical phenomena involving near-degenerate electronic states, such as conical intersections or avoided crossing, can be properly described using quasi-degenerate perturbation theory. Neryl diphosphate (C) synthase (NDPS1), a homodimeric soluble cis-prenyltransferase from tomato, contains four disulfide bonds, including two inter-subunit S-S bonds in the N-terminal region. Mutagenesis studies demonstrated that the S-S bond formation affects not only the stability of the dimer but also the catalytic efficiency of NDPS1. Structural polymorphs in the crystal structures of NDPS1 complexed with its substrate and substrate analog were identified by employing massive data collections and hierarchical clustering analysis.
