Screening for Systemic Diseases Associated with Dental Self-Care in Japanese Adolescents.

Toothbrushing is important for maintaining oral health and preventing periodontal disease. However, the association between toothbrushing and systemic diseases remains unclear in adolescence. In this study, the association between dental self-care (frequency and duration of toothbrushing) and systemic diseases/disorders in adolescents was examined.

Decreased antioxidant-related superoxide dismutase 1 expression in peripheral immune cells indicates early ethanol exposure.

Alcohol consumption increases oxidative stress and imbalances in the antioxidant system, even with ethanol (EtOH) exposure at a young age. This study assessed changes in the antioxidant system following young EtOH exposure in peripheral immunity and measured sensitive indicators of heavy alcohol consumption. We used peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 197 male university students without smoking habits to examine changes in antioxidant-related gene expression in vitro and in PBMCs.

Facility wastewater monitoring as an effective tool for pandemic infection control: An experience in COVID-19 pandemic with long-term monitoring.

Introduction: Since the first report of a novel coronavirus infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019, the infection has spread rapidly and had a significant impact on our lives. In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no adequate testing system in place, despite an urgent need for infection control measures in student dormitories.

Methods: We have been monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater as part of our infection control efforts in the university facilities since fall 2020.

Momentum-resolved EELS and CL study on 1D-plasmonic crystal prepared by FIB method.

We investigate a one-dimensional plasmonic crystal using momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques, which are complementary in terms of available optical information. The plasmonic crystal sample is fabricated from large aluminum grains through the focused ion beam method. This approach allows curving nanostructures with high crystallinity, providing platforms for detailed analysis of plasmonic nanostructures using both EELS and CL.

Diffusion-Dominated Luminescence Dynamics of CsPbBr Studied Using Cathodoluminescence and Microphotoluminescence Spectroscopy.

Time-resolved or time-correlation measurements using cathodoluminescence (CL) reveal the electronic and optical properties of semiconductors, such as their carrier lifetimes, at the nanoscale. However, halide perovskites, which are promising optoelectronic materials, exhibit significantly different decay dynamics in their CL and photoluminescence (PL). We conducted time-correlation CL measurements of CsPbBr using Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry and compared them with time-resolved PL.

Quantitative evaluation model of variable diagnosis for chest X-ray images using deep learning.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use of a deep learning model in quantitatively evaluating clinical findings typically subject to uncertain evaluations by physicians, using binary test results based on routine protocols. A chest X-ray is the most commonly used diagnostic tool for the detection of a wide range of diseases and is generally performed as a part of regular medical checkups. However, when it comes to findings that can be classified as within the normal range but are not considered disease-related, the thresholds of physicians' findings can vary to some extent, therefore it is necessary to define a new evaluation method and quantify it.

Aims: The beneficial effects of exercise on reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease are established. However, the potential interaction between genetic risk for type 2 diabetes and physical activity on cardiovascular outcomes remains elusive. Anti-neurofascin 155 Antibody-positive Neuropathy in a Human Immunodeficiency Virus-infected Patient.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neuropathy is a common complication of HIV infection and has several clinical subtypes. HIV-associated chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is a demyelinating neuropathy whose clinical features are known to differ from those of CIDP in the HIV-uninfected population. We herein report a case of CIDP in an HIV-infected patient who was finally diagnosed with anti-neurofascin 155 (NF155) antibody-positive neuropathy.

A Case of Fragility Fracture of the Pelvis Initially Diagnosed as Osteoarthritis of the Hip.

We present the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with anterior groin pain, initially diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis (OA), scheduled for total hip arthroplasty, and subsequently diagnosed with an occult fragility fracture of the pelvis (FFP) by preoperative computed tomography (CT) examination. We diagnosed the patient with pre-existing hip OA and a bilateral sacrum and left pubic tubercle fracture that exacerbated the groin pain. We operated on the FFP followed by simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty.

The association between adverse reactions and immune response against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein after vaccination with BNT162b2 among healthcare workers in a single healthcare system: a prospective observational cohort study.

Adverse reactions after vaccination with COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are common; however, the association between adverse reactions and humoral responses is uncertain. To determine whether humoral immune responses after BNT162b2 vaccine administration were associated with local and systemic adverse reactions, we conducted a prospective observational cohort study in a single tertiary referral center. Total Hip Arthroplasty with a Cementless Acetabular Component and Impaction Bone Grafting for Dysplastic Osteoarthritis Complicated by Multiple Myeloma.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for pathologic and impending fracture due to periacetabular multiple myeloma (MM) lesions has been reported. We report a case of radiographic progression of dysplastic osteoarthritis, complicated by periacetabular MM lesions, treated by THA. A 69-year-old female with a 13-year history of MM presented with right hip pain.

Introduction: The usefulness of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody tests in asymptomatic individuals has not been well validated, although they have satisfied sensitivity and specificity in symptomatic patients. In this study, we investigated the significance of IgM and IgG antibody titers against SARS-CoV-2 in the serum of asymptomatic healthy subjects.

Methods: From June 2020, we recruited 10,039 participants to the project named the University of Tokyo COVID-19 Antibody Titer Survey (UT-CATS), and measured iFlash-SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG (YHLO IgM and IgG) titers in the collected serum.

Nutrient infusion evoked magnetic resonance imaging signal in the human hypothalamus.

Background: The hypothalamus receives ingested nutrient information via ascending gut-related projections and plays a significant role in the regulation of food intake. Human neuroimaging studies have observed changes in the activity or connectivity of the hypothalamus in response to nutrient ingestion. However, previous neuroimaging studies have not yet assessed differences in temporal changes of hypothalamic responses to various nutrients in humans.

Importance: Repeat expansion of CGG in LRP12 has been identified as the causative variation of oculopharyngodistal myopathy (OPDM). However, to our knowledge, the clinicopathologic features of OPDM with CGG repeat expansion in LRP12 (hereafter referred to as OPDM_LRP12) remain unknown.

Background: Antiretrovirals, including tenofovir, can suppress human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection but cannot completely eradicate it. Patients with HIV infection are administered antiretroviral drugs over a long term; thus, managing consequent adverse drug reactions, such as renal dysfunction and bone mineral loss, is important. Currently, highly sensitive biomarkers that can detect adverse drug reactions early have not been well studied.

VAV1 mutations contribute to development of T-cell neoplasms in mice.
