Objective: To assess the usefulness of transarterial embolization (TAE) before a transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) procedure for large bladder tumors, intra- and postoperative outcomes were retrospectively compared between patients with and without TAE before TURBT.

Methods And Results: Thirty-seven patients underwent TURBT for complete resection of bladder tumors with a diameter of 3 cm or greater between January 2013 and December 2023 at the Department of Urology, Hyogo Medical University. For 13, TAE was performed 1 or 2 days before TURBT.

Angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare, aggressive malignancy originating from vascular or lymphatic endothelial cells. Despite its severity, little is known about its epidemiology, and no geographical regions have previously been identified as having an exceptionally high incidence. We retrospectively analyzed medical records spanning 37 years (1987-2023) in Okinawa, Japan, identifying 135 cases of AS that were used to calculate its incidence.

Adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a central kinase involved in energy homeostasis. Increased intracellular AMP levels result in AMPK activation through the binding of AMP to the γ-subunit of AMPK. Recently, we reported that AMP-induced AMPK activation is impaired in the kidneys in chronic kidney disease (CKD) despite an increase in the AMP/ATP ratio.

Objective: To elucidate the incidence, presentation timing, and determinants of adulthood neourethral strictures after childhood hypospadias repair, using data from a database derived from a single procedure performed by a single surgeon.

Methods: Pediatric patients with hypospadias who underwent staged surgery using a foreskin-derived neourethra served as the Denominator population. Clinical data from adult neourethral stricture patients who re-visited us were analyzed.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-induced adverse events due to excessive immune stimulation are problematic in immunotherapy. The activation of viral infection triggered by ICI-induced dysregulated immunity has been proposed; however, this association remains inconsistent. This study investigated the association between ICI administration and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, a pathogen linked to immune abnormalities and reactivation, using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System.

Article Synopsis
  • Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare skin cancer often treated with surgery, but some patients don't respond well to chemotherapy, especially those who become resistant to trastuzumab, a drug targeting HER2.* -
  • Researchers created patient-derived xenografts (PDX) that mimic the traits of EMPD, finding that trastuzumab resistance was linked to the loss of the PTEN gene, which affects cell growth signaling.* -
  • The study shows that using PTEN inhibitors can help restore sensitivity to trastuzumab, and the TR EMPD-PDX models responded well to other targeted therapies and chemotherapy, indicating new treatment possibilities.*

Background And Purpose: Interfractional geometrical and anatomical variations impact the accuracy of proton therapy for pancreatic cancer. This study investigated field-in-field (FIF) and simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) concepts for scanned proton therapy treatment with different beam configurations.

Materials And Methods: Robustly optimized treatment plans for fifteen patients were generated using FIF and SIB techniques with two, three, and four beams.

  • Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare skin cancer mainly affecting older adults in the anogenital areas, with no proven treatments from clinical trials so far.
  • Researchers created a patient-derived xenograft model to test various treatments, discovering that eribulin showed significant effectiveness against EMPD tumors.
  • A phase II clinical trial, started in October 2022, is assessing eribulin's efficacy in unresectable EMPD patients, with plans to establish it as a standard treatment if results are positive.

Introduction: Heterotopic salivary gland tissue (HSGT) is diagnosed when salivary gland tissue is found in areas other than the major or minor salivary glands. No dermoscopic findings of HSGT have been reported.

Case Presentation: This case report gives the dermoscopic findings of a 45-year-old woman with HSGT who presented with a longstanding pale red macule on her neck, characterized by repeated clear fluid discharge.

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a malignant tumor originating from endothelial cells. HSA typically develops in dogs, but is rare in other animals, including humans. Although surgery and chemotherapy are conventional treatments for HSA, neither treatment can significantly improve patient prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is linked to cognitive impairment and increased dementia risk, but the communication between kidneys and the brain is not well understood.
  • A CKD mouse model showed decreased memory recognition and identified the buildup of proteins like tau and SNRNP70 in the hippocampus, along with blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown signs.
  • The study found that high urea levels reduced critical junction proteins in brain cells, with activated MMP2 contributing to BBB damage, establishing a potential connection to Alzheimer's disease.

Article Synopsis
  • * The main treatment for AIGA is steroid pulse therapy, although the number of treatment courses needed for improvement isn’t well established.
  • * A study of 28 AIGA patients over the past decade found that those with larger areas of anhidrosis require more steroid therapy courses for improvement.

Malignant melanoma (MM) is often associated with a poor prognosis due to metastasis and cancer death. The monitoring of prognostic factors is of vital importance, and among these factors, elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) should be closely observed during the disease course. Important factors for predicting the survival of MM patients include tumor thickness, ulceration, the number of lymph node metastases, metastatic lesions, and the sites of metastasis.

Case 1: A male in his 60s underwent a right transperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy procedure for a right renal tumor. Rupture of a renal cyst located close to the tumor occurred intraoperatively. The histopathological diagnosis was clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC), pT1aN0M0, G2, v0, with negative resection margins.
