Biliary cancer and pancreatic cancer are considered to be difficult diseases to cure. Although complete resection provides the only means of curing these cancers, the rate of resectability is not high. Therefore, chemotherapy is often selected in patients with advanced unresectable biliary-pancreatic cancer.

The aim of the present study was to investigate markers in surgically resected specimens of colorectal cancer that can be used to predict the response to chemotherapy. The mRNA expression levels of enzymes involved in 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) metabolism and folate metabolism were measured in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor sections obtained from the primary tumors of 54 patients with resected stage II or III colorectal cancer who received S-1 for one year. The 5-FU metabolizing enzymes studied were thymidylate synthase, dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase and thymidine phosphorylase (TP).

Article Synopsis
  • A 76-year-old woman was found to have intraabdominal tumors during a routine check-up, which were later confirmed to be adenocarcinoma in lymph nodes.
  • Despite extensive testing, no primary site was identified, leading to a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of unknown primary.
  • Remarkably, the patient remained disease-free for 5 years after surgery without needing postoperative chemotherapy, marking a significant case in long-term survival for this condition.

Article Synopsis
  • - Central bisegmentectomy (CBS) is a surgical procedure for removing specific liver segments, often used for patients with liver tumors when other options aren't suitable due to poor liver function.
  • - The study involved 8 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) and noted that the surgeries took an average of 552 minutes with an average blood loss of 2263 grams.
  • - The results showed a 1-year disease-free survival rate of 62.5% and a 100% overall survival rate after 1 year, highlighting CBS as a viable option for certain liver tumor cases in patients with limited liver function.

Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the leading mesenchymal neoplasia in the gastrointestinal tract, but GIST arising from the rectum is rare. When a secondary neoplasia coexists in the vicinity of a rectal GIST, more aggressive treatment strategies may be needed to cure the diseases.

Presentation Of Case: We herein describe a 76-year-old man with a large gastrointestinal stromal tumor along with an advanced adenocarcinoma in the rectum that coexisted with prostate carcinoma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the role of the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its impact on patient survival post-surgery.
  • It analyzes data from 65 patients who underwent surgery, finding that higher RAGE expression correlates with poorer histologic differentiation and worse overall and disease-free survival rates.
  • The results suggest that RAGE expression is a significant predictor of clinical outcomes in HCC, indicating that targeting RAGE could be a potential new treatment strategy.
