A new hydroxyl-rich mineral called hydroxyl-dominant gadolinite (OH-Gad) has been found in Norway's Heftetjern granitic pegmatite, associated with rare-earth minerals.
The empirical formula for OH-Gad is (YCaCeLaNd)(Fe□)BeSiO(OH), and its crystal structure is monoclinic with specific measurements indicating its unique geometry.
OH-Gad is noteworthy because it is the first member of the gadolinite subgroup that is both hydroxyl and iron dominant, identified as a potential new mineral.
