To determine whether HIV-1 viruses exist in tears of patients under HAART, a cross-sectional study was designed. All participants who underwent long-term HAART with undetectable plasma viral load had detectable HIV-1 viral load in tears (n = 16) and had no difference from the controls (n = 5). Our data suggested that the lacrimal gland and/or other tear-associated tissues could be new reservoirs for HIV-1 and precautions should be taken when doing eye examinations.

The electronic structure and lattice dynamical properties of solid methane under high pressure have been studied based on density functional theory. We identify a cubic structure with space group of I43m below 14 GPa, the Pmn2(1) structure in the range of 14-21 GPa, and the P2(1)/c structure from 21 to 65 GPa. Our obtained Raman spectra of the P2(1)/c structure agree well with the typical Raman active modes in the available experimental data.

The heterometallic hexanuclear cyanide-bridged complex {[Mn(bpym)(H(2)O)](2)[Fe(HB(pz)(3))(CN)(3)](4)} (1), its C(15)N and D(2)O enriched forms {[Mn(bpym)(H(2)O)](2)[Fe(HB(pz)(3))(C(15)N)(3)](4)} (2) and {[Mn(bpym)(D(2)O)](2)[Fe(HB(pz)(3))(CN)(3)](4)} (3), and the hexanuclear derivative complex {[Mn(bpym)(H(2)O)](2)[Fe(B(pz)(4))(CN)(3)](4)}·4H(2)O (4) [bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine, HB(pz)(3)(-) = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate, B(pz)(4)(-) = tetra(1-pyrazolyl)borate] have been synthesized. Their structures have been determined through single-crystal X-ray crystallography at different temperatures. Whereas 3 and 4 maintain a discrete hexanuclear motif during the entire temperature range investigated (down to 95 K), 1 and 2 exhibit a thermally induced reversible single-crystal to single-crystal phase transition driven by a remarkable concerted rearrangement of hydrogen and cyanide coordination bonds.

The self-assembly of [Fe(III){B(pz)(4)}(CN)(3)](-) and [Co(II)(bik)(2)(S)(2)](2+) affords the diamagnetic cyanide-bridged [Fe(II)(LS)Co(III)(LS)](2) molecular square which is converted into the corresponding magnetic [Fe(III)(LS)Co(II)(HS)](2) species under light irradiation at relatively low temperatures.

A magneto-structural study of two salicylamidoxime-based {Mn(6)} single-molecule magnets revealed that their anisotropy energy barriers, which can reach the current record for d-transition metal complexes, are strongly dependent upon the precise arrangement of ligands and the solvation state.

A new 1D coordination polymer comprised of [Mn(III)(6)O(2)(Et-sao)(6)(EtOH)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](2+) units and bithiophene dicarboxylato was synthesized by mixing EtsaoH(2) (salicylaldoxime), H(2)btda (2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid) and Mn(ClO(4))(2)·6H(2)O in the presence of NEt(4)OH. The crystal structure was determined and consists of Mn(6) clusters bridged by the bithiophene dicarboxylato ligands coordinated to two of the Mn(III) ions of the Mn(6) polynuclear complex. Direct current magnetic measurements show an overall ferromagnetic interaction between the Mn(III) ions within the Mn(6) cluster leading to an S = 12 ground state for the Mn(6) unit.

Background: CD4(+) T cell counts have been used as the indicator of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) disease progression and thereby to determine when to start highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Whether and how the baseline CD4(+) T cell count affects the immunological and viral responses or adverse reactions to nevirapine (NVP)-containing HAART in Chinese HIV-1 infected adults remain to be characterized.

Methods: One hundred and ninety-eight HIV-seropositive antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive subjects were enrolled into a prospective study from 2005 to 2007.

It is well known that cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) play essential roles in regulation of the cell cycle. In past two decades, the scientific researches suggest that the cyclin D1/ CDK4 complex is a key regulator of the transition through the G1 phase of the cell cycle. Moreover, deregulation of the cyclin D /CDK4 pathway has been identified in multiple tumor types.
