There is growing clinical interest in the utilization of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the management of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD), yet the effect of major histocompatibility complexes (MHCs) on B lymphocytes in this process has been less well documented. Working in an MHC fully mismatched murine aGvHD model, we found that MSC co-transfer significantly prolonged the survival time of the recipients. More interestingly, analysis on immunophenotypic profiles of posttransplant splenocytes showed that surface expression of CD69 (an early activation marker) and CD86 (a costimulatory molecule) was suppressed predominantly on donor derived B lymphocytes by MSC infusion.

Two-dimensional conventional radiotherapy (2D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) are effective for control of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of life (QoL) of stage II NPC patients treated with 2D-CRT versus IMRT. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 106 patients with stage II NPC treated with 2D-CRT (n = 47) versus IMRT (n = 59) between June 2008 and June 2013.

Inefficient homing of systemically infused mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) limits the efficacy of existing MSC-based clinical graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) therapies. Secondary lymphoid organs (SLOs) are the major niches for generating immune responses or tolerance. MSCs home to a wide range of organs, but rarely to SLOs after intravenous infusion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the relationship between the level of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and the severity of chronic hepatitis B (CHB), liver inflammation, and fibrosis in patients.
  • A total of 301 patients with CHB were analyzed through liver biopsies, and various biochemical markers including HBsAg levels and HBV DNA quantitation were measured to understand their correlation with liver health.
  • Results showed that as liver inflammation and fibrosis worsened, HBsAg levels decreased significantly, while it was also found that HBsAg levels were more effective in predicting liver fibrosis than inflammation among CHB patients.
