Article Synopsis
  • Platinum-based chemotherapy (PBCT) is an effective first-line treatment for metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC), and this study explored whether continuing maintenance chemotherapy is better than just monitoring patients after initial treatment.
  • Among 265 mTNBC patients, those who received maintenance therapy had a statistically significant longer median progression-free survival (PFS) of 9.63 months compared to 7.47 months for those who were only observed, along with improved overall survival (OS) rates.
  • The findings suggest that maintenance chemotherapy offers a survival advantage for patients not showing disease progression after initial PBCT treatment, although it can lead to some adverse events like hematologic toxicity and hand-foot syndrome.

Aims: Neural stem cells (NSCs) in the adult mammalian spinal cord are activated in response to spinal cord injury (SCI); however, mechanisms modulating this process are not clear. Here, we noticed SCI elevated expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and we aimed to validate the roles of VEGF in NSCs activation after SCI and investigated the related signals during the process.

Methods: In vitro we detected whether VEGF promoted spinal cord NSCs proliferation and investigated the involved signals; In vivo, we injected VEGF into rat spinal cord to check the NSCs activation.

We defined the maximum-tolerated dose (MTD) of chemoradiotherapy (cisplatin (CDDP) with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and concurrent chemoradiotherapy) for Chinese patients with esophageal cancer. Twenty-one previously untreated patients with primary esophageal cancer were entered into this study. Escalating doses of CDDP with 5-FU were administered in a modified Fibonacci sequence, with concurrent conventional fractionation radiotherapy (CFR) of 60 Gy or 50 Gy.
