Dietary selenium (Se) is an essential component that supports fish growth and the immune system. This review attempts to provide insight into the biological impacts of dietary Se, including immunological responses, infection defense, and fish species growth, and it also identifies the routes via which it enters the aquatic environment. Dietary Se is important in fish feed due to its additive, antioxidant, and enzyme properties, which aid in various biological processes.

Cutting fluids are the most effective method to lower the cutting temperature and decrease the cutting tool wear. At the same time, the cutting fluids influence the corrosion resistance property of the machined surface. In this study, chlorinated paraffin (CP), which is a common additive in the cutting fluid, was selected as the research objective to study its corrosion resistance property.

The present study assessed general strategies for the isolation and in vitro culture of immature ovary-derived cells (oocytes) in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). In phase 1 of this study, the effects of different digestive enzymes on cell retrieval from developing ovarian tissues were examined to facilitate efficient oocyte isolation. Subsequently, the ovary-derived cells/oocytes were cultured under various conditions to evaluate the effects of basal media and supplement concentrations.

Hepatopancreas necrosis disease (HPND) is a highly fatal disease that first appeared in Jiangsu Province, China, in 2015, and later spread to many other provinces, which had a severe impact on the culture of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). Here, changes in the intestinal flora of healthy and HPND-affected Chinese mitten crabs were compared via 16S rRNA sequencing. Our findings indicated that Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria were the three dominant phyla in both healthy and HPND-affected crabs and exhibited no significant differences in α-diversity (richness p = 0.

Apoptosis is programmed cell death that is strictly regulated by a series of related genes and is of great importance in resisting pathogen invasion and maintaining cell environment homeostasis. Among apoptotic proteins, the voltage-dependent anion channel protein (VDAC) plays a key role in the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway because of its close connection with changes in mitochondrial membrane potential. However, the role of VDAC in apoptosis and immune regulation in Procambarus clarkii is poorly understood.

Article Synopsis
  • "Black May" disease (BMD) causes high mortality in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) in China during April to May, prompting a study to explore its causes through transcriptome analysis of affected tissues.
  • The study analyzed gill, muscle, and hepatopancreas tissues, revealing over 19 million clean reads and identifying 114,024 unigenes, with a total of 3,143 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) across these tissues.
  • KEGG pathway analysis indicated that DEGs were significantly linked to metabolism, human disease, and apoptosis, with a notable down-regulation in genes associated with immune responses and metabolism, suggesting these factors contribute to the

Using the technique of edge-based compartmental modelling (EBCM) for the spread of susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) diseases in networks, in a recent paper (PloS One, 8(2013), e69162), Miller and Volz established an SIR disease network model with heterogeneous infectiousness and susceptibility. The authors provided a numerical example to demonstrate its validity but they did not perform any mathematical analysis of the model. In this paper, we resolve this problem.

Increasing evidences suggest that intestinal microbiota balance closely correlated with host's health status could affected by external environment. Integrated crayfish-rice cultivation model is a highly efficient artificial ecosystem widely practiced in subtropical China. Less information is available to estimate the influence response to the micro-ecology of crayfish intestine and so as to influence the biological processes.

Cyclin B is a ubiquitous regulatory molecule and has been implicated in mitosis and meiosis in oocytes. Phenomenon that differ in the length of cyclin B 3'UTR in crustacean has attracted much attention, although molecular details are poorly understood. The study of 3'UTR-interacting proteins could yield much information in translational regulation and the mRNA localization process.

In this study, we established a Cre/loxP mutant recombination system (Cre/lox71-66 system) for markerless gene deletion to facilitate our follow-up rational genetic engineering to the strain Bacillus pumilus W3. This modified method uses two mutant loxP sites, which after recombination creates a double-mutant loxP site that is poorly recognized by Cre recombinase, facilitating multiple gene deletions in a single genetic background. Two selected genes, cotA and sigF, were continuously knocked out and verified at different levels using this method.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungal laccases are unstable under high pH and temperature, limiting their use in treating textile wastewater, while bacterial laccases, like CotA-laccase from Bacillus pumilus, are much more stable in these conditions.
  • This study successfully achieved high production of the CotA-laccase in Bacillus subtilis, yielding 373.1 U/mL through optimized conditions and screening a suitable signal peptide for secretion.
  • The research also found that using acetosyringone (ACS) as a redox mediator significantly improved the decolorization and detoxification of textile industry wastewater by the purified CotA-laccase, making it a promising solution for industrial applications.

The red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii is a highly adaptable, tolerant, and fecund freshwater crayfish that inhabits a wide range of aquatic environments. It is an important crustacean model organism that is used in many research fields, including animal behavior, environmental stress and toxicity, and studies of viral infection. Despite its widespread use, knowledge of the crayfish genome is very limited and insufficient for meaningful research.

Tristetraprolin (TTP) is a CCCH tandem zinc finger protein that can bind to and destabilize certain mRNAs containing AU-rich element (ARE) binding sites. In this study, a novel porcine cDNA has been isolated by expressed sequence tag assembly and subsequently confirmed by RT-PCR analysis, and designated porcine TTP (poTTP). The open reading frame of the poTTP cDNA is 981 bp, encoding 326 amino acids.

In this paper, the cDNA encoding the extracellular soluble domain of rabbit BAFF (rsBAFF) was subcloned into the pET28a vector and the recombinant rsBAFF protein was solubly produced in Escherichia coli. Recombinant rsBAFF protein of 17.1kDa was then purified to a purity of 95% by using Ni(2+)-IDA resin.
