An ancient and counterintuitive phenomenon known as the Mpemba effect (water can cool faster when initially heated up) showcases the critical role of initial conditions in relaxation processes. How to realize and utilize this effect for speeding up relaxation is an important but challenging task in purely quantum system till now. Here, we experimentally study the strong Mpemba effect in a single trapped ion system in which an exponentially accelerated relaxation in time is observed by preparing an optimal quantum initial state with no excitation of the slowest decaying mode.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an oral sequential triple combination therapy with selexipag after dual combination therapy with endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA) and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5I)/riociguat in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients. Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets, with largely exposed surface area and highly accessible active sites, have emerged as a novel kind of sensing material. Here, a luminescent 2D MOF nanosheet was designed and synthesized by a facile top-down strategy based on a three-dimensional (3D) layered MOF {[Zn(HL)(HO)]·HO} (; HL = 3,5-bis(3',5'-dicarboxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole). With a large π-conjugated system and rigid planar structure, ligand HL was elaborately selected to construct the bulk , which can be readily exfoliated into 2D nanosheets, owing to the weak interlayer interactions and easy-to-release HO molecules in the interspaces of 2D layers.

We theoretically investigate the linear susceptibility and propagation of light in a three-dimensional (3-D) Rydberg gas under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Rydberg atoms with two relevant S states are coupled via exchange interactions. When the gas is initially prepared in an entangled spin-wave state, this coupling induces a strong, nonlocal susceptibility whereby the photon field at one point of the medium acts as a source at a distant position.

Settlement of cyanobacterial bloom biomass (CBB) into sediments in eutrophic lakes often induced the occurrence of black water agglomerate and then water quality deterioration. This study investigated the effect of sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) on CBB removal in sediments and related water pollution. Effects of iron oxide amendment into freshwater sediments on performance of sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) were investigated. It was found that amending amorphous bulk ferric oxyhydroxide, and crystalline goethite and magnetite did not affect SMFC operation. However, amendment of the mixed solution including soluble ferric citrate and colloidal iron oxyhydroxide, stably improved SMFC performance with voltage outputs up to threefolds higher than those without amendment.

Zhangjiakou is an important city in the north of Hebei province with rapidly developing industry in recent years, which has little precipitation and a very fragile ecological environment. The observation of atmospheric pollutants was done from December 2009 to November 2010 to illuminate the air pollution situation. The results showed that the annual mean concentration of PM10, the primary pollutant, reached (137 +/- 105) microg x m(-3), and those of NO, NO2, SO2 and O3 were (8 +/- 13), (30 +/- 15), (19 +/- 26) and (54 +/- 35) microg x m(-3), respectively; The seasonal mean concentrations of NOx and SO2 were highest in winter, with values of (51 +/- 35) microg x m(-3) and (42 +/- 29) microg x m(-3), respectively, and lowest in summer, only (28 +/- 8) and (4 +/- 3) microg x m(-3), respectively.
