We have previously reported that high-alcohol-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (HiAlc Kpn) in the gut can cause endo-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This study cultivated a bacterial consortium (S60) from landfill leachate that exhibited effective heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) properties. Under aerobic conditions, the removal of NH-N reached 100 % when the S60 consortium utilised NH-N either as the sole nitrogen source or in combination with NO-N and NO-N. We propose extended one-way waveguide states of large-area propagation in a photonic crystal waveguide consisting of two honeycomb gyromagnetic photonic crystals with opposite external magnetic fields. When the width of the waveguide is small enough, the edge states along both boundaries of the waveguide couple with each other strongly and thus create the so-called extended one-way waveguide states. Of note, this structure supports both even and odd extended states, which can be excited under different excitation conditions.

Accurate detection of multiple pathogens in the early stages of infection is critical for guiding treatment and saving patients' lives, but current methods are still challenged by low sensitivity, poor robustness and long turnaround times. Here, we report a CRISPR/dCas9-based hotspot self-assembling surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensor (called dCasSERS) and its integration with a smartphone to address these challenges. In this design, bacterial DNA was pre-amplified by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), and the repeat sequences of the amplicons were recognized by CRISPR/dCas9, providing abundant sites for the assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and forming numerous hotspots for SERS analysis.

The rapid progress of urbanization and industrialization has led to the accumulation of large amounts of metal ions in the environment. These metal ions are adsorbed onto the negatively charged surfaces of clay particles, altering the total surface charge, double-layer thickness, and chemical bonds between the particles, which in turn affects the interactions between them. Dust storms have a profound impact on air quality, atmospheric chemistry, and human well-being by carrying vast amounts of particles over distances of thousands of kilometers. However, the overall characteristics of these dust events and their influence on secondary pollution in the northern China region are not yet well understood, due to a lack of long-term, comprehensive observations and objective identification techniques. Based on principal component analysis combined with high-time-resolution observations of particulate matter components, here we developed a robust method to identify dust storm events and identified 14 dust events in Beijing in 2019.
