Imaging of bilateral Ask-Upmark kidney.

Unique radiologic features of Ask-Upmark kidney were reported. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed lobulated cortical thinning. Renal dimercaptosuccinic acid scan revealed isolated circular accumulations mimicking accessory kidneys.

Serotonergic heterotypic sprouting in the unilaterally dopamine-depleted mouse neostriatum.

The effects of unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) treatment on striatal serotonin neurons in 12-day-old mice were studied using immunohistochemistry. The unilateral 6-OHDA lesions were evaluated with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. The majority of the TH-immunoreactive structures disappeared from the substantia nigra and neostriatum on the 6-OHDA lesioned side.

Clinical study on localization-related epilepsy in infancy without underlying disorders.

A clinical study of 15 patients without underlying disorders whose first seizures occurred before 1 year of age was performed to determine the characteristics of localization-related epilepsies in infancy. The patients were retrospectively divided into two groups: the seizure-controlled group (10 patients) and the refractory group (five patients). The seizure-controlled group included patients whose seizures were controlled completely within 1 year after onset; the refractory group included all other patients.

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone in treatment of intractable epilepsy: neurochemical analysis of CSF monoamine metabolites.

The efficacy of thyrotropin-releasing hormone in children with intractable epilepsy was investigated and changes in cerebrospinal fluid monoamine metabolites were analyzed. The 18 patients had either West syndrome (12 patients) or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (6 patients), which was intractable to antiepileptic drug therapy and to adrenocorticotrophic hormone. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone-tartrate was administered for 4 weeks.

[Zonisamide monotherapy against absence attacks: report of two cases].

We report two cases of absence seizures, in which zonisamide monotherapy was effective. In one case the attacks recurred 6 months after the beginning of zonisamide therapy but ceased again with an increase of the dosage. The EEG prior to treatment showed 3 Hz generalized spike-wave patterns and 3 Hz high voltage slow wave burst in the right occipital area in one case, and 3.

Patient with unusual alternating hemiplegia.

A patient with unusual alternating hemiplegia in childhood is reported. The frequency of hemiplegic episodes was lower than that in other reported patients. Interictal positron emission tomography revealed decreased cerebral blood flow in the left hemisphere.

Effects of neonatal asphyxia on the serotonin neuron system in the developing brain studied by immunohistochemistry.

The effects of neonatal asphyxia on the serotonin neuron system were examined using the immunoperoxidase method. Male mice, 2 days of age, were exposed to total asphyxia (100% CO2) for 30 min. Mice that spontaneously survived were perfused transcardially with a fixative at 15, 30 and 60 days of age.
