Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to improve the detection of superficial squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the esophagus using virtual chromoendoscopy by evaluating the impact of different air volumes during endoscopy.
  • - Researchers analyzed 101 cases of flat type esophageal SCC and compared the visibility of the lesions under less-air versus standard-air conditions using narrow band imaging (NBI).
  • - Results indicated that visibility of SCC was significantly better with less-air conditions, with up to 67% of lesions showing improved visibility, suggesting that using less air could enhance detection during endoscopic exams.

Magnetic skyrmion is a topologically protected particle-like object in magnetic materials, appearing as a nanometric swirling spin texture. The size and shape of skyrmion particles can be flexibly controlled by external stimuli, which suggests unique features of their crystallization and lattice transformation process. Here, we investigated the detailed mechanism of structural transition of skyrmion lattice (SkL) in a prototype chiral cubic magnet CuOSeO, by combining resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) experiment and micromagnetic simulation.

Ciliary dyneins are preassembled in the cytoplasm before being transported into cilia, and a family of proteins containing the PIH1 domain, PIH proteins, are involved in the assembly process. However, the functional differences and relationships between members of this family of proteins remain largely unknown. Using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model, we isolated and characterized two novel Chlamydomonas PIH preassembly mutants, mot48-2 and twi1-1.

Topological magnetic structure possesses topological stability characteristics that make it robust against disturbances which are a big advantage for data processing or storage devices of spintronics; nonetheless, such characteristics have been rarely clarified. This paper focused on the formation of chiral soliton lattice (CSL), a one-dimensional topological magnetic structure, and provides a discussion of its topological stability and influence of thermal fluctuation. Herein, CSL responses against change of temperature and applied magnetic field were investigated via small-angle resonant soft X-ray scattering in chromium niobium sulfide ([Formula: see text]).

Wheat (Tritium aestivum) is vulnerable to future climate change because it is predominantly grown under rain-fed conditions in drought-prone areas. Thus, in-depth understanding of drought effect on wheat metabolism is essential for developing drought-tolerant wheat varieties. Here, we exposed wheat 'Norin 61' plants to progressive drought stress [0 (before drought), 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days after withholding water] during the flowering stage to investigate physiological and metabolomic responses.

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has low specificity for detecting significant functional coronary stenosis. We developed a new transluminal attenuation gradient (TAG)-derived dynamic CCTA with dose modulation, and we investigated its diagnostic performance for myocardial ischemia depicted by N-ammonia positron emission tomography (PET). Data from 48 consecutive patients who had undergone both dynamic CCTA and N-ammonia PET were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: One of the main causes of death in psychiatric patients is cardiovascular diseases which are closely related with lifestyle-related diseases. Psychiatric disorders include schizophrenia and mood disorders, whose symptoms and treatment medicines are different, suggesting that they might have different metabolic disorders. Thus, we studied the differences of lifestyle-related diseases between schizophrenia and mood disorders in Japan.

BCR-ABL1-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a neoplasm of lymphoblasts committed to the B-cell lineage that lack the BCR-ABL1 translocation but show a pattern of gene expression very similar to that seen in ALL with BCR-ABL1 with poor prognosis. A 22-year-old female was diagnosed with common-B-cell-ALL positive for CD10, CD19, CD22, CD79a, CD34, HLA-DR, and TdT in January 2017, and achieved complete remission (CR) with induction therapy, followed by consolidation therapy and maintenance therapy. In March 2020, 6 months after the completion of maintenance therapy, she relapsed.

The topological Hall effect (THE) and its thermoelectric counterpart, the topological Nernst effect (TNE), are hallmarks of the skyrmion lattice phase (SkL). We observed the giant TNE of the SkL in centrosymmetric Gd_{2}PdSi_{3}, comparable in magnitude to the largest anomalous Nernst signals in ferromagnets. Significant enhancement (suppression) of the THE occurs when doping electrons (holes) to Gd_{2}PdSi_{3}.

Determining factors that predict a favorable disease course without anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents would help establish a more cost-effective strategy for Crohn's disease (CD). A retrospective chart review was performed for CD patients with disease durations > 10 years who had not received anti-TNF agents as first-line therapy. Patients were divided into 2 groups: those who received neither anti-TNF agents nor bowel resection (G1), and those who had received an anti-TNF agent and/or bowel resection (G2).

Study Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder caused by the obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. The most common cause of pediatric OSA is adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Adenotonsillectomy is the first-line treatment for pediatric OSA; however, OSA persists in a significant number of patients due, in part, to the method of evaluating enlarged adenoids and tonsil tissue.

Background: Factor V (FV) deficiency is a monogenic inherited coagulation disorder considered to be an ideal indication for gene therapy. To investigate the possibility of therapeutic application of genome editing, we generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from a FV-deficient patient and repaired the mutation of factor V gene (F5) using a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated 9 (Cas9).

Methods: The patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells were reprogrammed for iPSCs.

Speciation is a continuous process. Although it is known that differential adaptation can initiate divergence even in the face of gene flow, we know relatively little about the mechanisms driving complete reproductive isolation and the genomic patterns of divergence and introgression at the later stages of speciation. Sticklebacks contain many pairs of sympatric species differing in levels of reproductive isolation and divergence history.
