Lecanemab, an antibody drug targeting amyloid-β, has been approved to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the United States and Japan recently. However, there are several concerns about Lecanemab, such as its minimum biological effects, possible side effects, and its economic burden. On the other hand, non-pharmacological approach without major side effects has a potential to alleviate the symptoms of AD by improving cognitive reserve, which is individual's resilience to AD pathology.

One-Step Palladium-Catalyzed Heterocyclic Ring Closure of Benzofurans with Aryl Iodides through a Heck-Type Pathway.

An operationally simple and robust method for the direct arylation and ring closure of benzofurans is reported. Besides the mild conditions and good reaction yields, the methodology is applicable for a wide range of derivatives using commercially available aryl iodides with complete C regioselectivity. The reaction is proposed to follow a Heck-type oxyarylation mechanism.

Numerous studies examining the responses of individual neurons in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex have revealed their characteristics such as two-dimensional or three-dimensional shape tuning, objects, or category selectivity. While these basic selectivities have been studied assuming that their response to stimuli is relatively stable, physiological experiments have revealed that the responsiveness of IT neurons also depends on visual experience. The activity changes of IT neurons occur over various time ranges; among these, repetition suppression (RS), in particular, is robustly observed in IT neurons without any behavioral or task constraints.

During free viewing, we move our eyes and fixate on objects to recognize the visual scene of our surroundings. To investigate the neural representation of objects in this process, we studied individual and population neuronal activity in three different visual regions of the brains of macaque monkeys (): the primary and secondary visual cortices (V1, V2) and the inferotemporal cortex (IT). We designed a task where the animal freely selected objects in a stimulus image to fixate on while we examined the relationship between spiking activity, the order of fixations, and the fixated objects.

Innate and adaptive resistance to cancer therapies, such as chemotherapies, molecularly targeted therapies, and immune-modulating therapies, is a major issue in clinical practice. Subpopulations of tumor cells expressing the receptor tyrosine kinase AXL become enriched after treatment with antimitotic drugs, causing tumor relapse. Elevated AXL expression is closely associated with drug resistance in clinical samples, suggesting that AXL plays a pivotal role in drug resistance.

Ureteral strictures, which can be caused by ureteral injury, radiation therapy, ureterolithiasis, urinary tract infections, and ureteral endometriosis, typically require ureteral reconstruction. Although tissue engineering, autologous alternative tissue transplantation, and surgical techniques applying various flaps have been carried out for ureteral regeneration, all with some success, each method has its advantages and disadvantages. As an alternative, we created the first artificial ureter structures using only live cells and grafted them into healthy rat ureters.

Disposition of E-selectin-targeting liposomes in tumor spheroids with a perfusable vascular network.

We constructed tumor spheroids with a perfusable vascular network to assess drug delivery systems that target the tumor vasculature. A tricultured tumor spheroid containing human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was placed in the central compartment of a microfluidic device, and the HUVECs were seeded into the microslit channels on both sides. Angiogenic sprouts began to form within a few days, from both the tumor spheroids and microchannels, and became more abundant and branched, while attracting each other, over time.

Descending thoracic aortic repair outcomes for chronic aortic dissection: a single-centre experience.

Objectives: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair is a widely accepted treatment for chronic aortic dissection because of good early results compared to open surgical repair. We provide early and long-term results of descending thoracic aortic repair for chronic aortic dissection.

Methods: Patients who underwent descending thoracic aortic repair for chronic aortic dissection between January 2012 and December 2020 at Kawasaki Aortic Centre were included in this analysis.

Neurons in visual area V4 modulate their responses depending on the figure-ground (FG) organization in natural images containing a variety of shapes and textures. To clarify whether the responses depend on the extents of the figure and ground regions in and around the classical receptive fields (CRFs) of the neurons, we estimated the spatial extent of local figure and ground regions that evoked FG-dependent responses (RF-FGs) in natural images and their variants. Specifically, we applied the framework of spike triggered averaging (STA) to the combinations of neural responses and human-marked segmentation images (FG labels) that represent the extents of the figure and ground regions in the corresponding natural image stimuli.

Effects of water chestnut ( Roxb.) extract/lutein on fingertip-measured advanced glycation endproduct/carotenoid levels.

This pilot study tested the effects of the supplements containing water chestnut extract and carotenoids on antiglycation and carotenoid levels. Twenty Japanese subjects (mean age, 67 ± 7 years; 13 men) ingested 200 mg of Roxb. extract (containing >50 mg of polyphenols), 20 mg of lutein, and 3 mg of zeaxanthin daily for 3 months.
