In this study, we evaluated the thermal environments of different tennis courts using wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) meters. WBGT meters were installed in an outdoor hard court, sand-filled artificial grass court, and clay court (a softball field), and measurements were taken hourly from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays from June 1 to September 21, 2022. The results were compared with data from different courts and the nearest Japan Meteorological Agency station (JMA WBGT) based on the Japan Sports Association's guidelines for exercise to prevent heat stroke.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a type of bacteria that convert carbohydrates into lactate through fermentation metabolism. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nitrate and nitrite on the pH-lowering activity of human plaque, the nitrite-producing and -degrading activities of human plaque, and their correlation.

Methods: Nitrate and nitrite were added to human plaque suspensions collected from the buccal aspect of maxillary molars of patients visiting a general dental clinic, and changes in pH were measured with and without glucose addition. Nitrite-producing and -degrading activities were evaluated by adding nitrate and nitrite to the plaque suspension and measuring the increase and decrease in nitrite with Griess reagent, respectively.

Water-soluble phthalocyanine (Pc) derivatives have been regarded as potential G-quadruplex (G4) nucleic acid-targeting ligands for anticancer therapy and have been extensively studied as effective photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Understanding how photosensitizers interact with nucleic acids and the subsequent photolytic reactions is essential for deciphering the initial steps of PDT, thereby aiding in the development of new photosensitizing agents. In this study, we found that red-light irradiation of a mixture of a Zn(II) Pc derivative and an all-parallel G4 DNA leads to catalytic and selective photodegradation of the DNA by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from the Zn(II) Pc derivative bound to DNA through a reaction mechanism similar to that of an enzyme reaction.

Acaryochloris species belong to a special category of cyanobacteria possessing chlorophyll (Chl) d. One of the photosynthetic characteristics of Acaryochloris marina MBIC11017 is that the absorption spectra of photosystem I (PSI) showed almost no bands and shoulders of low-energy Chls d over 740 nm. In contrast, the absorption spectra of other Acaryochloris species showed a shoulder around 740 nm, suggesting that low-energy Chls d within PSI are diversified among Acaryochloris species.

Nursing homes face a high risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection; in the early stages of the pandemic, outbreaks in nursing homes resulted in significant deaths among residents. Our medical team intervened in one nursing home struggling to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed the outcomes of 65 residents (52 women and 13 men; mean age, 89 years) during the first wave of infection, as well as changes in resident and staff numbers after the pandemic subsided.
