Prototype of a reflux-preventing ureteral stent and its clinical use.

We have experimentally produced a ureteral stent which prevents vesicorenal reflux. This stent has a thin silicon sleeve at its distal end (intravesical portion). In a model experiment the sleeve demonstrated an excellent capability to prevent reflux.

[Visualization of the intravesical urine stream].

Although many urodynamic techniques have been used to evaluate the function of the lower urinary tract, the principles of these measurements are only based on a relationship between flow rate and pressure. In addition to these measurements, the intravesical urine stream would provide useful information on urodynamics. We have experimentally attempted to visualize the urine stream in a bladder using transrectal ultrasound examination.

Isolation and characterization of isolectins from Erythrina variegata seeds.

Three isolectins were isolated from seeds of Erythrina variegata (Linn.) var. Orientalis by ion-exchange chromatography, followed by affinity chromatography on lactose-Sepharose 4B and acid-treated Sepharose 4B columns.

[Postoperative intravesical instillation of THP for superficial bladder tumor: clinical results of prophylactic effects on the recurrence. Fukushima THP Research Group].

Intravesical instillation of pirarubicin (THP) was performed on 66 patients with superficial bladder cancer after transurethral resection to evaluate the prophylactic effect against tumor recurrence. Intravesical chemotherapy was carried out at the concentration of 20mg/40ml. THP was initially instilled three times for one week, following instillation of every two weeks for ten times, and then every one month for seven times.

We report a case of different types of median raphe cysts in the penis. The literature is reviewed and the origin of these cysts is discussed.

[A case of idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum].

We report a case of idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum. The patient was a 33-year-old male with a complaint of multiple scrotal nodules, from which white chalky materials occasionally broke out. The nodules were first noticed 17 years ago, and since then gradually increased in size and number.

[Effect of KT-611 (Naftopidil) on the contraction of human prostatic tissue and its use in benign prostatic obstruction].

A new alpha 1-adrenergic receptor antagonist, KT-611 (naftopidil) antagonized dose dependently the contraction induced by agonists, noradrenaline and phenylephrine in the human prostatic tissue. KT-611 at a dosage of once or twice a day was evaluated for its effects on 49 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy. The drug improved subjective and objective symptoms significantly.

[A case of a foreign body in the urinary bladder--a surgical suture needle was found in urinary bladder].

We report a case of an unusual foreign body in the urinary bladder. A 66-year-old male had undergone an operation of rectal cancer 6 years previously. He visited our hospital with irritative urinary symptoms.

Eight healthy males were studied to compare CO diffusing capacity (DLCO) during spontaneous breathing with that during continuous negative extra-thoracic pressure (CNETP). Mean DLCO was 33.0 +/- 5.

In vitro hydrolysis of oligomannose-type sugar chains by an alpha-1,2-mannosidase from microsomes of developing castor bean cotyledons.

An alpha-1,2-mannosidase involved in the processing of N-linked oligosaccharides was prepared from the microsomal fraction of developing castor bean cotyledons. The processing alpha-mannosidase was solubilized with 1.0% Triton X-100 and purified by ion-exchange chromatography followed by two gel filtration steps.

[A case of adrenal black adenoma associated with Cushing's syndrome].

The patient was a 24-year-old female, who had clinical and laboratory findings of Cushing's syndrome with slight virilizative changes. CT scan, ultrasound sonography and scintigraphy demonstrated that there was a functioning tumor at the right adrenal region. Thus we performed right adrenalectomy.

[A case of myocardial infarction associated with pulmonary edema during curettage for hydatidiform mole].

We experienced a case of myocardial infarction associated with pulmonary edema in a patient with hydatidiform mole probably due to methylergometrin and prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) administered during the operation. A 26-year-old woman was scheduled to have curettage for hydatidiform mole under general anesthesia. She had no previous history of cardiopulmonary disease.

Vanadium transfer during haemodialysis.

The authors examined transport of vanadium (V) in 100 chronic haemodialysis (HD) patients. Serum V levels were different at the inflow and the outflow site. Vanadium was transferred from blood to dialysate through the membrane.

Hormonal treatment of symptomatic spinal cord compression in advanced prostatic cancer.

The authors describe 2 cases of symptomatic spinal cord compression due to metastatic prostatic cancer. Both cases showed marked improvement of cord compression after hormone therapy, and decompressive laminectomy was not necessary. The management of prostatic cancer patients with symptomatic spinal cord compression is discussed.

Cefminox sodium penetration into prostatic tissue with and without inflammation.

The concentrations of cefminox sodium (CMNX) in serum and prostatic tissue were determined in 36 cases of prostatic hyperplasia with and without inflammation. Mean ratios of CMNX in tissue over concentration in serum were 0.11 +/- 0.

Klinefelter's syndrome associated with unilateral cryptorchidism in childhood.

We report a case of Klinefelter's syndrome in a 3-year-old boy with unilateral cryptorchidism. The literature is reviewed, and hormonal condition and treatment of Klinefelter's syndrome are discussed.

Structures of sugar chains of water-soluble glycoproteins in developing castor bean cotyledons.

The structures of sugar chains from the water-soluble glycoproteins in developing castor beans have been identified. The structural analyses were done by a fluorescence method combined with exoglycosidase digestions and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The identified structures fell into two categories; one was an oligomannose-type, the other xylomannose-type or xylose-containing type.

[A case of medullary sponge disease associated with horseshoe kidney].

A 60-year-old man visited our hospital with complaints of micturition pain and interruption of urinary stream. X-ray examinations were performed, showing no bladder and urethral stone. However, KUB revealed bilateral multiple renal stones.

[A case of urachal abscess].

A 26-year-old male with urachal abscess was demonstrated. Ultrasonography, CT and MRI revealed that there was a mass at the supravesical region, which was connected to the umbilicus. However, a differential diagnosis as to whether the mass was a tumor or an abscess was difficult from these examinations.

[The tidal volume, arterial blood gas and functional residual capacity changes during negative extra-thoracic pressure ventilation and positive airway pressure ventilation].

Eight patients, of ASA physical status I or II soon after total knee replacement under general anesthesia, were studied to compare negative extra-thoracic pressure ventilation (NETPV) with positive airway pressure ventilation (PAPV). The measured parameters during the two ventilatory modes were tidal volume, arterial blood gas and functional residual capacity change (delta FRC). Tidal volume obtained during NETPV was 60 to 80% of that during PAPV at the same absolute values of peak pressure.

Clinical evaluation of effects of prazosin in patients with benign prostatic obstruction. A double-blind, multi-institutional, Paraprost-controlled study.

Prazosin, a selective alpha 1-adrenoceptor blocker, was compared with Paraprost in a double-blind, multi-institutional study in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The trial encompassed 77 evaluable patients in the prazosin group and 79 in the Paraprost group. Both drugs significantly improved obstructive and irritative symptoms.
