The manifestation of glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype (GB) as intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Molecular characteristics, including TERT promoter mutation, EGFR amplification, and chromosome 7 gain/10 loss, were incorporated to diagnose GB in the fifth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. When molecular analyses fail to detect low fractions of these genetic alterations, the integrated diagnosis of GB can be enigmatic.

Congenital syphilis (CS) is a mother-to-child infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, transmitted through the placenta. In Japan, the number of syphilis cases has recently increased, accompanied by an increase in CS cases. Thus, automated methods for serum antibodies with serial values, without a 2× dilution sequence, have been widely used.

Purpose: A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement often requires ultrasound guidance. Previous studies using an adult blood pressure cuff have suggested that veins do not easily collapse at the tourniquet pressure from diastolic to systolic blood pressure. When inserting a PICC into the basilic vein of the upper arm, a narrow blood pressure cuff should be used as a tourniquet to avoid concealing the puncture site.

Background: Ultrasound guidance is commonly used for accessing difficult peripheral veins. For successful access, a tourniquet is required for venodilation. Tourniquets decrease the compressibility and increase the diameter of veins; they also obfuscate artery-vein differentiation on ultrasound.

Angiocentric glioma (AG) is a supratentorial diffuse low-grade glioma characterized by the MYB::QKI fusion gene, showing angiocentric growth of monomorphous spindle cells with astrocytic and ependymal immunophenotypes. We describe a rare case of MYB::QKI fusion-positive diffuse cerebellar glioma in a 54-year-old male. The patient initially presented with a T2/FLAIR hyperintense lesion in the left cerebellar hemisphere and slowly progressive neurological symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the toxic effects of tellurium (Te), focusing on its methylation process by two enzymes, TPMT and INMT.
  • - Researchers used advanced analytical techniques (LC-ICP-MS and GC-MS) to examine how these enzymes transform various Te compounds.
  • - Findings indicate that TPMT and INMT work together to convert tellurite into safer metabolites, specifically trimethyltelluronium ions, which are eliminated through urine.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and patient outcomes of pharmacist-physician collaborative protocol-based antimicrobial treatment regimens for antimicrobial stewardship.

Methods: Patients treated for aspiration pneumonia due to stroke within 48 h after admission to Kochi Medical School Hospital (January 2019 to December 2022) were included. Primary outcomes were the cumulative number of days of antimicrobial treatment and length of hospital stay.

Introduction: Despite its importance for young women, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage remains low in Japan. Previous studies have examined behaviors related to HPV catch-up vaccination. Uniquely, this study aimed to investigate perceptions and factors influencing vaccination coverage among female university students in the catch-up program, focusing on both medical and non-medical undergraduates.

This study proposes a time-evolution method to simulate acoustic gas-mixture separation. The proposed method can calculate the separation process without any arbitrary parameters except for space and time resolutions. The molar-fraction distribution within the system during the separation can be calculated, and the results show that a large molar-fraction gradient occurs in the separation tube, while a distribution also occurs in the resonance tube.

γ-Glutamyl-β-cyanoalanylglycine (gEcnAG) is a glutathione analog in which the cysteine moiety in glutathione is replaced with β-cyanoalanine, a known plant cyanide metabolite. Previously, gEcnAG was detected in the liver of rats and chicks exposed to β-cyanoalanine. We reported the detection of gEcnAG in naïve mammalian cells using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS).

inhabits the gingival sulcus and has been reported to cause various periodontal diseases; it has rarely been reported to cause bacteremia. We describe a case of a two-year-old boy who presented with a consciousness disorder and was transferred to our hospital for treatment of a brain abscess. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 6-cm brain abscess in the right frontal lobe.

Seaweeds of the red algal genus Laurencia are distributed worldwide in tropical, subtropical to temperate zones, growing in Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Laurencia is highly difficult to classify morphologically because of a high degree of morphological variation within individual species. Nevertheless, Laurencia investigation is favored by organic chemists as it produces uniquely structured compounds.

The widespread prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli limits treatment options and is a worldwide problem. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility and ESBL types of 204 strains of CTX-M-type ESBLsproducing E. coli isolated from 2011 to 2017 in the Chubu region of Japan and to identify factors correlated with susceptibility.

Tellurium (Te) is a chalcogen element like sulfur and selenium. Although it is unclear whether Te is an essential nutrient in organisms, unique Te metabolic pathways have been uncovered. We have previously reported that an unknown Te metabolite (UKTe) was observed in plants exposed to tellurate, a highly toxic Te oxyanion, by liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LC-ICP-MS).

Background: Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) enteritis is a condition in which MRSA grows abnormally in the intestine after administration of antimicrobial agents, resulting in enteritis. Patients with MRSA detected in stool culture tests are often diagnosed with MSRA enteritis. However, uncertainty remains in the diagnostic criteria; therefore, we conducted epidemiological studies to define these cases.

Many real-world image recognition problems, such as diagnostic medical imaging exams, are "long-tailed" - there are a few common findings followed by many more relatively rare conditions. In chest radiography, diagnosis is both a long-tailed and multi-label problem, as patients often present with multiple findings simultaneously. While researchers have begun to study the problem of long-tailed learning in medical image recognition, few have studied the interaction of label imbalance and label co-occurrence posed by long-tailed, multi-label disease classification.

In this study, we clarify the liquid structure formed at the interface between LiCoO (LCO), the cathode material of Li-ion batteries, and propylene carbonate (PC), which is used as a solvent in the electrolyte, on a molecular scale. We apply sparse modeling-based modal analysis to force spectroscopy data measured by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) and show that each component in the FM-AFM force curve, such as oscillatory solvation force, background, and noise, can be automatically decomposed. Moreover, by combining detailed force curve analysis with solid/liquid interface simulations based on first-principles calculation, we have identified that there are distinct damped vibrational modes in the force curves at the LCO/PC interface with a period of about 0.

Objectives: An increasing number of drug-resistant bacteria have been identified recently. In particular, drug-resistant bacteria have been linked to unfavorable prognoses in patients with bacteremia, highlighting the need for rapid testing. Our previous studies have focused on the utility of a drug susceptibility testing microfluidic (DSTM) method using microfluidic channels.
