The effect of thoraco-vagotomy on the distribution and frequency of chromogranin-, serotonin-, somatostatin- and gastrin-immunoreactive cells in the abomasum of the calf were investigated by immunohistochemistry. Calves were vagotomized at 1 week old and sampled 2 and 4 weeks later. The endocrine cells generally decreased in number in vagotomized calves as compared to non-operated control calves.

hsp105alpha is a stress protein characteristically highly expressed in the brain compared with other tissues in mammals. Here, to examine whether hsp105alpha plays a pivotal role in the nervous system, we tested the capability of hsp105alpha to protect against apoptosis in rat neuronal PC12 cells. Various stress treatments such as serum deprivation, heat shock, hydrogen peroxide, etoposide, and actinomycin D induced apoptosis in PC12 cells with characteristic shrinking of nuclei and chromatin.

In this study we showed that the magnitude of this illusion is dependent on (i) whether a perceptual or visuomotor task is used for judging the location of the window (ii) the directional signature of the stimulus, and (iii) whether or not there is a significant delay between the end of the visual presentation and the initiation of the localization measure. Our stimulus was a drifting sinusoidal grating windowed in space by a stationary, two-dimensional, Gaussian envelope (sigma=1 cycle of sinusoid).

Hsp105alpha and Hsp105beta are stress proteins found in various mammals including human, mouse, and rat, which belong to the Hsp105/Hsp110 protein family. To elucidate their physiological functions, we examined here the chaperone activity of these stress proteins. Methods: We studied 26 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, focal optic disk damage, and focal visual field loss. The visual field was evaluated with automated perimetry, and the optic disk topography was assessed with a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope.
Human colorectal tumor cell lines were established which express wildtype p21 or p21 with a mutation at codon 46 (Cys) or 140 (Gly) on IPTG treatment (LacSwitch). The IPTG-induced wildtype p21 bound to CDK2 and PCNA and inhibited CDK activity in the cells and reduced cell growth rate; whereas, both IPTG-induced mutated p21 proteins neither bound to CDK2 nor affected the CDK activity but did bind to PCNA, and they did not affect the cell growth rate. Wildtype p21 suppressed apoptosis and enhanced survival of X-ray-irradiated or adriamycin-treated cells; but, mutated p21 neither suppressed apoptosis nor affected cell survival.

Exposure of cultured human osteosarcoma cells (Saos-LP-12) to high-density (400 mT at 50 Hz) extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELFMF) induced mutations in the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase gene. Saos-LP-12 cells, which are isolated from parental Saos-2 cells and have a deletion in the coding region of the p53 gene, are introduced to the wild-type (wt) p53 expression plasmid (pOPRSVp53). The mutation in Saos-LP-12 cells was suppressed by expression of the introduced wt p53 gene during 400 mT ELFMF exposure.

To gain better understanding of the regulation of stress responses in neuronal cells, we examined the induction of HSP70, HSP70 mRNA, and heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) DNA-binding activity following treatment by heat shock or with sodium arsenite or amino acid analogue in PC12 cells treated with or without NGF. The induction of HSP70 and HSP70 mRNA following these stresses was diminished in the differentiated PC12 cells compared to the undifferentiated cells, whereas the HSF1 DNA-binding activity was enhanced in the differentiated PC12 cells.

Cells overexpressing the I kappa B-alpha protein were more radiosensitive than the parental cells and one transfected clone with low expression. In the parental cell lines and one transfected clone with low expression, the sequence specific DNA-binding activity of NF-kappa B was considerably increased between 1 and 2 h after irradiation.
