Background: Understanding the development of central venous catheter-related thrombus (CVCRT) is vital for the prevention of adverse events caused by thrombi after cardiac surgery in children. However, the risks associated with CVCRT remain controversial. This study analyzed the risk factors of CVCRT based on a detailed evaluation of its morphometric features and severity.

Growth-associated protein 43 (GAP43) is a membrane-associated phosphoprotein predominantly expressed in the nervous systems, and controls axonal growth, branching, and pathfinding. While the association between GAP43 and human neurological disorders have been reported, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. We performed whole exome sequencing on a patient with intellectual disability (ID), neurodevelopmental disorders, short stature, and skeletal abnormalities such as left-right difference in legs and digital deformities, and identified a heterozygous missense variation in the GAP43 gene [NM_001130064.

Background: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) presents motor skill delays in early childhood and has been associated with later maladaptation, necessitating early intervention. However, research on the potential risk factors, particularly in preschool-aged children, remains scarce.

Aims: We aimed to explore the association between small for gestational age (SGA) and other factors and motor coordination problems in 5-6-year-olds from the Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health Cohort.

Background: Although the in silico predictive ability of the Ames test results has recently made remarkable progress, there are still some chemical classes for which the predictive ability is not yet sufficient due to a lack of Ames test data. These classes include simple heterocyclic compounds. This study aimed to investigate the mutagenicity and structure-mutagenicity relationships for some heterocycles in the Ames test.

Article Synopsis
  • A 75-year-old woman was diagnosed with early-stage gastric cancer during an endoscopic examination, specifically a type 0-I carcinoma located on the middle part of her stomach.
  • During the procedure, small whitish structures called white globe appearances (WGAs) were observed near the cancer area, indicating potential subepithelial cancer spread despite the surface appearing flat and noncancerous.
  • Histopathology results confirmed the presence of cancer with significant lymphatic invasion, showing that the cancer had spread along the lymphatic vessels into surrounding tissues, which was likely responsible for the WGA characteristics seen during the endoscopy.

Primary peritoneal cancer has characteristics similar to high-grade serous carcinomas of ovarian and fallopian tube origin. However, the relationship between endometriosis and primary peritoneal cancer is not well understood. This study focuses on a case of peritoneal cancer in a patient who had undergone hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy 5 yr before.

Although the developmental process of linguistic register-the appropriate manner of speech as determined by the listener and social situation-has been gradually clarified in typically developing (TD) children, research on the mechanism and developmental process of register acquisition in atypically developing children are insufficient. This study compared the developmental process of understanding linguistic register among TD children, autistic children, and those with Williams syndrome (WS), and examined the contributions of social cognition and motivation to the acquisition of linguistic register. Two experiments were designed to assess the recognition of which linguistic register to use when communicating with different listeners and of the listener's feelings according to the speakers' use of register.

Background And Aims: We investigated the ideal acetic acid (AA) concentration for AA-enhanced narrow-band imaging magnifying endoscopy (ANBI-ME) in the diagnosis of superficial colorectal neoplasms and evaluated its clinical efficacy.

Methods: During the exploratory phase, we investigated 4 concentrations (1.5%, 2.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a disorder characterized by motor symptoms, such as rigidity, akinesia, and resting tremor, as well as non-motor symptoms, including psychiatric manifestations and autonomic failure. The prevalence of PD increases with age, and the condition is more common in men than in women. Conversely, polypharmacy has emerged as a paramount medical concern, especially among older patients, correlating with medicines' adverse effects, interactions between medicines, frequent admissions to the hospital, and a high risk of morbidity and mortality.

Background: EXCOR Pediatric is one of the most commonly used ventricular assist devices (VAD) for small children; it requires visual inspection of the diaphragm movement to assess its operating status. Although this visual inspection can only be performed by trained medical professionals, it can also be attempted by the recent advances in computer vision technology.

Methods: Movement of the diaphragm in the operating EXCOR VAD was recorded as movies and annotated frame-by-frame in three classes according to the state of the diaphragm: "fill," "mid," and "empty.

Background: Approximately 296 million people suffer from chronic hepatitis B (CHB) caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). Current standard treatment, nucleos(t)ide analogs, are not efficient enough to eradicate HBV from the hepatocytes. Thus, developing new drugs for CHB is desired to achieve complete cure.

Methadone is used to treat intractable cancer pain when other opioid analgesics are ineffective. Methadone tablets may be difficult to administer in cases of gastrointestinal passage obstruction. However, changing the route of methadone tablet administration is possible.

Background & Aims: Sarcopenia is a serious problem in adults and children. However, limited modalities are available for diagnosing pediatric sarcopenia. The serum creatinine to cystatin C ratio (Cre/CysC ratio) is a promising method for muscle quantification, although its clinical significance in the pediatric population is unknown.

Mitochondrial diseases are mainly caused by dysfunction of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes and have a variety of genetic variants or phenotypes. There are only a few approved treatments, and fundamental therapies are yet to be developed. Leigh syndrome (LS) is the most severe type of progressive encephalopathy.

We assess the application and advantages of modifying the trans-unco-discal (TUD) approach which we underwent for cervical myelo-radiculopathy. We present the surgical techniques of the modified TUD approach. The material was 180 cases where anterior cervical decompression (ACD) was performed by the modified TUD approach.

A dissecting aneurysm in the P4 segment of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) is extremely rare, and its treatment is sometimes challenging. Endovascular parent artery occlusion (PAO) was performed for an unruptured P4 segment dissecting PCA aneurysm presenting with ischemic stroke and rapid growth. A 70-year-old man was rushed to our emergency department due to a right-sided headache and a visual field defect.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study demonstrated that apomorphine effectively prevents ferroptosis—a type of cell death—in both fibroblasts from mitochondrial disease patients and normal controls, which is marked by key biological indicators like PTGS2.
  • * Notably, the anti-ferroptosis effects of apomorphine are independent of its action on dopamine receptors, showcasing its potential as a powerful inhibitor of ferroptotic cell death regardless of dopaminergic activity.

Materials informatics in the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) related materials have been performed and exhibited the effectiveness for finding promising compounds with a desired property. However, the molecular structure optimization of the promising compounds through the conventional approach, namely the fine-tuning of molecules, still involves a significant amount of trial and error. This is because it is challenging to endow a single molecule with all the properties required for practical applications.

Electrophysiological recordings from freely behaving animals are a widespread and powerful mode of investigation in sleep research. These recordings generate large amounts of data that require sleep stage annotation (polysomnography), in which the data is parcellated according to three vigilance states: awake, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM (NREM) sleep. Manual and current computational annotation methods ignore intermediate states because the classification features become ambiguous, even though intermediate states contain important information regarding vigilance state dynamics.
