L-type calcium channel antagonists are uncommon causes of myoclonus, and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we report a case of parkinsonian syndrome with deterioration of preexisting myoclonus after nifedipine use. A 96-year-old woman was administered a single dose of sustained-release nifedipine for chest pain.

Effects of Baseline Blood Zinc Levels on the Humoral Immune Response After COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination: A Prospective Study in a Japanese Population.

Background/objectives: Although the protective effects of zinc against COVID-19 are documented, its impact on COVID-19 vaccine immunogenicity remains unknown.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study involving a cohort of 79 Japanese individuals (aged 21-56 years; comprising three subcohorts) and measured their serum zinc levels pre-vaccination and anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG levels pre- and post-vaccination over 4 months.

Results: Serum zinc concentrations ranged between 74-140 and 64-113 μg/dL in male and female individuals, respectively, with one male and 11 female participants exhibiting subclinical zinc deficiency (60-80 μg/dL).

A case of silicosis with infection relapsed with lymphadenitis 1 year after the completion of initial treatment.

A 71-year-old man with silicosis was treated for infection. Antimycobacterial treatment for was terminated 1 year after a negative test result for the bacteria on sputum examination. One year following the treatment, the patient developed pneumonitis.

Drug therapy for secondary lymphedema has not yet been established. Conventional oral and intravenous administration is difficult to administer in sufficient doses due to adverse events. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a transdermal delivery system that can deliver high concentrations of drugs to the edema area.

Background: Recent progress in molecular and signal analyses revealed essential functions of cellular signals including androgen and related growth factors such as Wnt regulators for external genitalia (ExG) development and its pathogenesis. Accumulated data showed their fundamental functions also for erectile tissue (corporal body) development and its abnormalities. The current review focuses on such signals from developmental and functional viewpoints.

Introduction: In many mammals, the testes descend from its abdominal position on the mesonephric kidney and are housed in the scrotum. It has been speculated that metatherians and eutherians might have acquired the scrotal testis independently because metatherians have the scrotum cranially to the phallus, while eutherians, such as humans and mice, possess it caudally. Rather, recent studies based on sequence comparisons of testis-descent-related genes indicate that the metatherian-eutherian common ancestor might already possess the descent mechanisms.

Effectiveness of inactivated influenza vaccine in children during the 2023/24 season: The first season after relaxation of intensive COVID-19 measures.

Background: The annual administration of the influenza vaccine is the most effective method for preventing influenza. We have evaluated the effectiveness of the inactivated influenza vaccine in children aged 6 months to 15 years across the seasons from 2013/2014 to 2022/2023. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the inactivated influenza vaccine in the 2023/2024 season, the first year following the easing of strict COVID-19 measures, and possibly the last season when only the inactivated vaccine is available on the market.

Impact of an enhanced sobriety checkpoints programme and publicity campaign on motor vehicle collisions, injuries and deaths in Leon, MX: a synthetic control study.

Objective: Drunk driving is a major cause of road traffic injuries and deaths in Latin America. We evaluated the impact of a drunk driving intervention in Leon, Mexico on road traffic safety.

Methods: The intervention included increased drunk driving penalties, enhanced sobriety checkpoints and a young adult-focused mass media campaign, beginning 19 December 2018.

Identification and characterization of a novel α-haemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus parapneumoniae sp. nov., which caused bacteremia with pyelonephritis.

Objectives: We report a case of bacteremia with pyelonephritis in an adult male with an underlying disease caused by α-hemolytic streptococci. α-Hemolytic streptococci were isolated from blood, but it was challenging to identify its species. This study aimed to characterize the causative bacterium SP4011 and to elucidate its species.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to severe falciparum malaria possesses a high mortality rate; however, a prognostic marker of renal dysfunction has not yet been identified. Thus, we reported a case of a patient with AKI secondary to falciparum malaria who underwent hemodialysis and a renal biopsy due to prolonged renal dysfunction. The male patient, in his 50 s, presented to our hospital with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and decreased level of consciousness.

A 75-year-old male with diabetes mellitus was referred to our hospital with an abnormal shadow on chest radiography, based on which he was diagnosed with extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC; cT2bN2M1a). The first-line therapy comprised atezolizumab, carboplatin, and etoposide. After four cycles, the patient achieved complete response (CR), and maintenance therapy was initiated with atezolizumab.

Aim: Several studies have shown the efficacy and safety of low-molecular-weight heparin use in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but that of unfractionated heparin (UFH) has not been investigated. Here we report the first case of phenytoin intoxication that was closely associated with hand-foot synkinesis. This case suggests a close association between cerebellar dysfunction and hand-foot synkinesis. In patients with hand-foot synkinesis, lesions of not only the secondary motor areas but also the cerebellum should be considered.
