Background: Portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) secondary to primary liver carcinoma (PLC) is commonly associated with poor prognosis and poses great challenge. This study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous endovascular radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in treatment of PVTT.

Methods: Consecutive patients who were performed endovascular RFA because of PVTT in single-institution in recent 8 years were retrospectively reviewed, compared with patients who underwent only sequential transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) during the contemporary period.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effects of combining endobiliary ablation with immune nutrition on patients with advanced malignant obstructive jaundice (MOJ) who undergo percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD).
  • The research involved 59 patients split into two groups: one received only standard treatment (control) and the other received additional ablation and nutrition (study group).
  • Results showed that while both groups had similar recovery times, the study group experienced longer stent patency (10.2 months vs. 6.8 months) and improved overall survival (9.6 months vs. 7.1 months), with lower inflammatory responses post-operation but no significant difference in complications.

Purpose: We compared the clinical outcomes of modified procedures for associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) based on a risk-reduced strategy with those of classic ALPPS procedures in treating large liver carcinoma.

Materials And Methods: Short-term outcomes, increases in future liver remnant (FLR) and functional FLR (FFLR), and overall survival (OS) were compared between 45 consecutive patients treated with modified ALPPS procedures and 34 patients treated with classic ALPPS procedures.

Results: Clinical outcomes after the 1st-stage operation markedly improved with the modified procedures.

Background: Although self-expandable mental stents (SEMS) placement is the standard care for relieving obstructive jaundice caused by unresectable malignant biliary stricture, how to maintain stent potency remains an intractable problem. This study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endobiliary radiofrequency ablation (RFA) through percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) pathway in treating such patients.

Methods: Consecutive patients who were performed endobiliary RFA as well as SEMS placement because of unresectable malignant obstructive jaundice in single institution in recent 8 years were retrospectively reviewed.

BACKGROUND Conflict still remains as to the benefit of angioembolization (AE) for non-operative therapy (NOT) of blunt hepatic trauma (BHT). The aim of this study was to determine whether AE could result in lower failure rates in hemodynamically stable BHT patients with high failure risk factors for NOT, and to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of AE for NOT of BHT. MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical records of all BHT patients from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2015 at a large trauma center were collected and analyzed.

Aviation-related mechanism may exist in the post-cholecystectomy syndrome (PCS) of aircrew patients. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis on vivo rabbit model and to explore the mechanism by using a novel telemetric method. We constructed a bile duct-to-intestinal bridge bypass on 30 rabbits, with a telemetry implant attached to the Oddi's sphincter.

Background: The prognosis for pancreatic cancer (PC) is very poor. The SnoN gene may have a role in cell proliferation and apoptosis in human cancer. However, the influence of SnoN on cell proliferation and apoptosis in human PC cells remains unknown.

Background: It has been shown that heat shock-related 70-kDa protein 2 (HSPA2), a member of the HSP70 family of heat shock proteins, is important for cancer cell growth and metastasis. However, the status of HSPA2 expression and its prognostic significance in pancreatic cancer remain unknown.

Methods: Quantitative reverse transcriptase ploymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to examine HSPA2 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in 104 pairs of pancreatic cancer tissues and adjacent noncancerous tissues.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an extremely malignant tumor with high lethality in humans. Pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) is the predominant precancerous lesion for PDAC. Although PanIN is frequently detected in the normal and inflamed pancreas, only a few of PanIN eventually progress into PDAC.

Transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) receptor signaling plays a paradoxical effect in the tumorigenesis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), in which its tumor-inhibitory role at early stages turns into a tumor-promoting role at later stages. The underlying mechanism remains far from clear. Here we provide strong evidence that the activation of TGFβ receptor signaling in PDAC cells increased SMAD3 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation to inhibit cell growth.

Telomere biology plays a critical and complex role in the initiation and progression of cancer. Several recent studies have provided evidence that rs401681 polymorphisms in intronic region of cleft lip and palate trans-membrane 1-like (CLPTM1L) gene sequence are associated with pancreatic cancer (PC) development, but a comprehensive synopsis is not available. We performed a meta-analysis of 6 case-control studies that included 8,253 pancreatic cancer cases and 37,646 case-free controls.

Objectives: To assess the association between polymorphism in the interleukin (IL)-10 promoter region of 1082 G/A and the risk of cervical cancer and/or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), using meta-analysis.

Methods: The electronic literature databases PubMed®, Embase®, Web of Science, CBMdisc and CNKI were searched for relevant studies. The strength of association between IL-10 gene -1082 G/A polymorphism and cervical cancer and/or CIN was measured using pooled odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals in four genetic models: allelic model (A allele versus G allele); additive model (A/A versus G/G); recessive model (A/A versus G/A+G/G); dominant model (A/A+G/A versus G/G).

Previous studies have suggested that the 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase gene (OGG1) has potentially influenced the risk of pancreatic cancer. The objective of this study was to assess the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of OGG1 gene and risk of pancreatic cancer. A case-control study has been conducted in 370 pancreatic cancer patients and 395 healthy controls.

Ephrin (EPH) receptors can be classified into EPHA and EPHB receptors and are important in diverse cellular processes. EPHA4, a member of the EPHA receptors, has been demonstrated to be elevated in various human cancers and involved in the tumor progression. However, the role of EPHA4 in pancreatic cancer cells remains unclear.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the human cancers with the highest fatality rates; however, the etiology still remains largely unknown. Recently, one genome-wide association study (GWAS), conducted exclusively among women of European ancestry, has discovered that cleft lip and palate transmembrane 1-like telomerase reverse transcriptase (CLPTM1L-TERT) rs401681 polymorphism was significantly associated with pancreatic cancer risk. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate whether this finding could be generalized to Chinese people.

Background: Cortactin is an important regulator involved in invasion and migration of tumor cells. Although the relationship between cortactin and tumor invasion has been reported, it lacks follow-up evidence to support the forecasting role of cortactin for HCC prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine whether cortactin detection combined with clinicopathologic features predicts the prognosis efficaciously.

Abernethy malformation is a rare anomaly with partial or complete congenital absence of the portal vein and subsequent development of extrahepatic portocaval shunts. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman who was incidentally diagnosed with type II Abernethy malformation and multiple aneurysms during an investigation for nonspecific abdominal pain and fever. The patient had been diagnosed with Caroli's disease at the age of 10 and liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension a few years before.
