The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of nitrification inhibitors on the dynamic changes in the nitrogen and microbial community in paddy soil under aerated irrigation by using the indica hybrid rice Zhongzheyou 8 as experimental material. A trial with three treatments was conducted in 2023: conventional flooding irrigation (CF), micro-nano bubble water aeration irrigation (MB), and micro-nano bubble water aeration irrigation combined with nitrification inhibitor (MBNI). The effects of nitrification inhibitors on the contents of NH-N and NO-N and the apparent nitrification rate of soil under aerated irrigation were analyzed, as well as the characteristics of bacterial community diversity and its correlation with soil chemical factors.

The boronic acid group plays an important role in drug discovery. Following our discovery of a boronic acid analog of combretastatin A-4 (CA-4), a series of analogs featuring a boronic acid group on the C phenyl ring of CA-4 was synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxicity, as well as for their ability to inhibit tubulin polymerization, inhibit the binding of [H]colchicine to tubulin and cause depolymerization of cellular microtubules. Modifications on the C ring of CA-4, either eliminating the methoxy group or replacing the C phenyl ring with a pyridine ring, resulted in a reduced potency for inhibiting tubulin polymerization, colchicine binding and cytotoxic activities as compared to CA-4.

Radiation-induced cataracts (RICs) represent a significant public health challenge, particularly impacting individuals exposed to ionizing radiation (IR) through medical treatments, occupational settings, and environmental factors. Effective therapeutic strategies require a deep understanding of the mechanisms underlying RIC formation (RICF). This study investigates the roles of angiotensin II (Ang II) and oxidative stress in RIC development, with a focus on their combined effects on lens transparency and cellular function.

Medical procedures, such as radiation therapy, are a vital element in treating many cancers, significantly contributing to improved survival rates. However, a common long-term complication of such exposure is radiation-induced skin fibrosis (RISF), a complex condition that poses substantial physical and psychological challenges. Notably, about 50% of patients undergoing radiation therapy may achieve long-term remission, resulting in a significant number of survivors managing the aftereffects of their treatment.

Soluble phosphorus scarcity severely limits plant growth and crop yield. In this study, a strain of inorganic phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, was isolated from rice rhizosphere soil. The available phosphorus content in liquid inorganic phosphorus identification medium and in L.

The hormonal imbalances, including abscisic acid (ABA) and brassinosteroid (BR) levels, caused by salinity constitute a key factor in hindering spikelet development in rice and in reducing rice yield. However, the effects of ABA and BRs on spikelet development in plants subjected to salinity stress have been explored to only a limited extent. In this research, the effect of ABA and BRs on rice growth characteristics and the development of spikelets under different salinity levels were investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • * Scientists are trying to figure out how these new chemicals are made and discovered a gene called BAM that helps create them.
  • * By using a technique called CRISPR, they deleted and studied this BAM gene, which increased the amount of one type of benzophenone, cytosporaphenone A, by nearly twice as much.

Gliotoxins are epipolythiodioxopiperazine toxins produced by the filamentous fungi, which show great potential in the treatment of liver and lung cancer because of its cytotoxicity. In this study, three novel genes related to gliotoxin biosynthesis, gliT, gliM and gliK encoding thioredoxin reductase, O-methyltransferase and gamma-glutamyl cyclotransferase, respectively, from the deep-sea-derived fungus Geosmithia pallida were cloned from G. pallida and expressed in Escherichia coli.

Salt stress inhibits rice productivity seriously. Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous signaling molecule in plants that can improve the resistance of rice to abiotic stresses. Previous studies also showed that nitrogen metabolism is essential for rice stress-tolerance.

Salinity-induced ethylene accumulation caused by high production of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) hinders rice plant growth and development. Nevertheless, ACC deaminase may alleviate salt stress and high ethylene production in rice cultivars under salinity stress. Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), an ACC deaminase co-factor, could be a useful ACC inhibitor in plants; however, it has not been studied before.

Epothilones are a kind of macrolides with strong cytotoxicity toward cancer cells and relatively lower side effects compared with taxol. Epothilone B derivate ixabepilone has been used for the clinical treatment of advanced breast cancer. However, the low yield of epothilones and the difficulty in the genetic manipulation of limited their wider application.

Decomposition of crop residues in soil is mediated by microorganisms whose activities vary with fertilization. The complexity of active microorganisms and their interactions utilizing residues is impossible to disentangle without isotope applications. Thus, C-labeled rice residues were employed, and DNA stable-isotope probing (DNA-SIP) combined with high-throughput sequencing was applied to identify microbes active in assimilating residue carbon (C).

Article Synopsis
  • Chemoautotrophic ammonia-oxidizers and nitrite-oxidizers help produce nitrates in soil, which plants need to grow.
  • A study found that chemical fertilizers reduced the soil's ability to create nitrates, while organic fertilizers increased it.
  • Different types of bacteria were found as active nitrifiers depending on the type of fertilizer used, showing how fertilizers can change the types of bacteria in the soil.

Epigenetic regulation of gene expression is an emerging target to treat several human diseases including cancers. In cancers, expressions of many tumor suppressor genes are suppressed by hyper-methylation in their regulatory regions. Herein, we describe a novel carbazole SH-I-14 that decreased the level of the acetyl-STAT3 at the K685 residue.

The facile total synthesis of the natural product (±)-mahanine was obtained in eight steps with an overall 52% yield from readily accessible known nitrophenol derivative 6. After a one-step, acid-catalyzed annulation, two additional natural products were formed including 7-hydroxymurrayazolinine, representing its first reported total synthesis. In the whole process, the introduction of the m-nitro group significantly enhanced the key pyran annulation reaction through inductive effects.

Background: The erythroblastosis virus E26 transforming sequences (ETS) family of transcription factors consists of a highly conserved group of genes that play important roles in cellular proliferation, differentiation, migration and invasion. Chromosomal translocations fusing ETS factors to promoters of androgen responsive genes have been found in prostate cancers, including the most clinically aggressive forms. ERG and ETV1 are the most commonly translocated ETS proteins.

EWS-FLI1 is an oncogenic fusion protein implicated in the development of Ewing's sarcoma family tumors (ESFT). Using our previously reported lead compound 2 (YK-4-279), we designed and synthesized a focused library of analogues. The functional inhibition of the analogues was measured by an EWS-FLI1/NR0B1 reporter luciferase assay and a paired cell screening approach measuring effects on growth inhibition for human cells containing EWS-FLI1 (TC32 and TC71) and control PANC1 cell lines devoid of the oncoprotein.
