Effectiveness of nursing care after surgery for stress urinary incontinence.

This study was conducted in two stages with 32 Turkish women undergoing surgery for correction of stress urinary incontinence. In Stage 1, 13 subjects (Group 1) were recruited for interviews and observations of their nursing care needs. Stage I also involved the development of a patient education pamphlet, nursing care protocol, and a standard nursing care plan.

Comparison effects of different doping on spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO(3).

The comparison between non-magnetic spin-Peierls (SP) and magnetic Néel ground states have been investigated in CuGeO(3) doped with Zn(2+), Ni(2+) and Mn(2+) ions by using the electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques in the temperature range of 3-300 K. It was concluded that the one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic (AF) spin chain formed of spin-1/2 (Cu(2+)) ions is broken by spin-0 (Zn(2+)), spin-1 (Ni(2+)), and spin-5/2 (Mn(2+)) ions, giving uncoupled spins at the end of the chains that give extra contribution to the spectra at lower temperature. An almost linearly dependence of frequency of resonance field has been showed for X-, K- and Q-band spectra.

The effect of inhaling thinner and/or cigarette smoke on rat kidneys.

Although the effects of cigarette smoking and/or thinner inhalation on various organs have been investigated, there isn't enough study available in literature about their effects on kidneys. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effect of smoking and/or inhalation on the rat kidney. In this study, stand-alone inhalation of thinner and cigarette smoke and their application together were used to determine histopathologic changes, primarily the influences on rat kidneys.

Protective effects of ibuprofen on testicular torsion/detorsion-induced ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of ibuprofen on testicular torsion/detorsion-induced ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. A total of 48 prepubertal male Wistar albino rats were divided into two models: early and late orchiectomy. Testicular torsion was created by rotating the right testis 720 degrees in a clockwise direction.

Paraneoplastic syndrome of non-small cell lung carcinoma: a case with pancytopenia, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.

Various remote effects of cancer or paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) are common in lung cancer, and may be the manifestation of the disease or its recurrence. The symptoms may be endocrine, neuromuscular or musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, cutaneous, hematologic, gastrointestinal, renal, or miscellaneous in nature. Since the symptoms of paraneoplastic syndromes may occur before the local symptoms of the primary tumor, it might be helpful in the early diagnosis of malignancy.

Hidden female urinary incontinence in urology and obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics in Turkey: what are the determinants of bothersome urinary incontinence and help-seeking behavior?

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of female urinary incontinence (UI) and risk factors of bothersomeness and help-seeking behavior of hidden female UI in urology and obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics. This multicentric and cross-sectional study was conducted as a part of the Turkish Overactive Bladder Study. Female patients (n = 5,565) who were referred with complaints other than UI and overactive bladder symptoms were surveyed using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF) with supplementation of five more questions.

Prognostic significance of fascin expression in endometrioid carcinoma.

Purpose Of Investigation: Actin bundling protein fascin has been previously associated with tumor progression in human cancers. We evaluated whether fascin also plays a role in endometrioid carcinomas.

Methods: Cases of 28 proliferative and hyperplastic endometrium and 43 endometrioid carcinomas were examined by immunohistochemistry using antihuman fascin antibody.

Renal angiomyolipoma with malignant transformation, simultaneous occurrence with malignity and other complex clinical situations.

Renal angiomyolipoma is a benign kidney tumor, which is characterized by the presence of mature or immature fat tissue, thick-walled blood vessels, and smooth muscles. However, there is a rare possibility of transformation to a malignancy. This transformation could be toward sarcoma.

L-carnitine deficiency and red blood cell mechanical impairment in beta-thalassemia major.

L-carnitine is an essential element of intermediary metabolism and also was shown to be effective in maintaining normal red blood cell (RBC) function. This study aimed at investigating plasma free L-carnitine concentrations and effectiveness of L-carnitine supplementation in protecting deterioration of RBC properties in beta-thalassemia major patients. Plasma free L-carnitine concentrations were determined in the blood samples obtained before their regular transfusion (about one month after the previous transfusion).

Hemorheological parameters as determinants of myocardial tissue hematocrit values.

F18-FDG coincidence-PET in patients with suspected gynecological malignancy.

Purpose: To assess the role of F18-FDG imaging with a dual-head coincidence mode gamma camera (Co-PET) in identifying malignant tumors in patients with a suspicious adnexal mass depicted by conventional imaging methods.

Material And Methods: F18-FDG Co-PET was performed preoperatively in 18 women (mean age 56.38 years) with suspected malignant gynecologic tumors according to clinical and abdomino-pelvic/transvaginal ultrasound or computed tomography findings.

Ni++ ions doped inorganic CuGeO3 sample has been studied by using electron spin resonance (ESR) technique in the temperature range of 3-300 K. The ESR spectrum of Cu++ ion has been observed to be strongly temperature dependent for inorganic spin-Peierls (SP) Cu0.96Ni0.

Spitzoid melanoma in childhood.

Spitzoid melanoma is a rare variant of melanoma. It has morphological features similar to those of Spitz's nevus. In this study, the histologic and immunohistochemical features of both Spitzoid melanoma and Spitz's nevus are emphasized.

Purpose Of Investigation: The aim of the study was to compare the fascin expression pattern and histopathologic features of malign epithelial ovarian tumors obtained by the primary and secondary surgeries.

Methods: The samples of 94 epithelial ovarian carcinomas, 35 secondary surgeries for ovarian carcinomas, 13 borderline epithelial ovarian tumors, 25 cystadenomas and four normal ovarian tissues were stained by means of fascin immunohistochemistry. Secondary surgeries included in the study were secondary cytoreduction at the time of second-look laparotomy (SLL), interval debulking surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy or secondary cytoreductive surgery in patients with recurrent epithelial ovarian carcinoma.

The role of potassium channels in relaxant effect of levosimendan in rat small mesenteric arteries.

We investigated both the effect of levosimendan and the role of various potassium channels in KCl-precontracted rat small mesenteric arteries. Levosimendan (10(-6)-10(-3) M) or cromakalim (CRO, 10(-7)-10(-4) M) produced concentration-dependent relaxation responses in small mesenteric arteries precontracted by 30 mM KCl. The relaxant responses to levosimendan in KCl-precontracted arteries did not differ significantly between endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded preparations.

Isolated bone metastasis in testicular germ cell tumors: a case report and review of the literature.

Background: In testicular germ cell tumors (GCT), bone metastases are usually seen late in the disease progress and are almost always associated with involvement of other sites. However, isolated bone metastasis is an extremely rare finding in these patients.

Comparison of the concentration of trace metals (Ni, Zn, Co, Cu and Se), Fe, vitamins A, C and E, and lipid peroxidation in patients with prostate cancer.

The anticarcinogenic and antioxidant properties of vitamins A, C, E and pro- or antioxidant properties of trace metals have recently attracted increased attention. We examined the levels of antioxidant vitamins (A, C and E), selenium and malondialdehyde (MDA), and trace metals (Fe, Ni, Zn, Co and Cu) in patients with prostate cancer. In total, 41 subjects (21 controls and 20 prostate cancer patients) were included in the study.

Effectiveness of functional magnetic versus electrical stimulation in women with urinary incontinence.

Aim: Urinary incontinence is one of the most common medical complaints in women. We here propose to evaluate and compare the effects of 2 conservative treatment modalities, functional electrical stimulation (FES) and functional magnetic stimulation (FMS).

Methods: We studied 22 female patients with urinary incontinence and divided them into 2 treatment groups (14 patients in the FES and 8 in the FMS group).

Reprogramming of replicative senescence in hepatocellular carcinoma-derived cells.

Tumor cells have the capacity to proliferate indefinitely that is qualified as replicative immortality. This ability contrasts with the intrinsic control of the number of cell divisions in human somatic tissues by a mechanism called replicative senescence. Replicative immortality is acquired by inactivation of p53 and p16INK4a genes and reactivation of hTERT gene expression.

Protective effects of L-carnitine on myoglobinuric acute renal failure in rats.

1. Muscle injury (rhabdomyolysis) is one of the causes of acute renal failure (ARF). Iron, free radicals and nitric oxide (NO) play a critical role in the pathogenesis of glycerol-induced myoglobinuric ARF.

Fascin, an actin-bundling protein expression in cervical neoplasms.

Purpose Of Investigation: Our objectives were (1) to examine expression of fascin in cervical tissues with chronic inflammation, intraepithelial neoplasms and invasive carcinomas, and (2) to investigate the role of fascin on endothelial migration and angiogenesis in cervical neoplasms.

Methods: In this study we investigated by means of immunohistochemistry fascin expression in 92 cervical biopsy samples representative of chronic inflammation (n=13), squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs, n = 33) and invasive carcinomas (n = 46).

Results: Various degrees of fascin expression were observed in 94% of the samples of SILs, in 67% of the samples of invasive cervical carcinoma and in 69% of the samples of chronic inflammation.

Electron paramagnetic resonance studies of Cu2+ ion in tetraaqua-di(nicotinamide)Ni(II)-saccharinates single crystals.

X-band (approximately 9.8 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurement at ambient temperature in three mutually perpendicular planes have been carried out on a single crystal of Cu2+ doped mixed ligand complex of Ni(II) with saccharin and nicotinamide [Ni(Nic)2(H2O)4](sac)2. The angular dependent spectra showed that the Cu2+ ion enters Ni2+ sites in the lattice and distorted local environment of Ni2+ site.
