Photodamage to the outer segments of photoreceptor cells and their impaired utilization by retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells contribute to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leading to blindness. Degeneration of photoreceptor cells and RPE cells is triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by photochemical reactions involving bisretinoids, by-products of the visual cycle, which accumulate in photoreceptor discs and lipofuscin granules of RPE. Carotenoids, natural antioxidants with high potential efficacy against a wide range of ROS, may protect against the cytotoxic properties of lipofuscin.

Quail Coturnix japonica is a convenient experimental animal model for the study of age and pathological retina processes to an accelerated time regime. The three main types of pigment granules present in the RPE are melanin-containing melanosomes, lipofuscin-containing lipofuscin granules, and mixed melanolipofuscin granules containing both melanin and lipofuscin.

Two-stage treatment implied small-caliber transparietal drainage of abscess with evacuation of purulent detritus at the first stage. At the second stage, primary percutaneous approach was transformed into access of sufficient diameter for flexible or rigid optics for visually controlled bone extraction.

Using the methods of fluorescence spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we analyzed the relative composition of retinoids in chloroform extracts obtained from the retinas and RPEs immediately after exposure of animals to various types of radiation and 4.5 months after they were exposed and maintained under standard conditions throughout the period.

Melanosomes act as screening pigments in RPE cells and are fundamentally important for protection against the free radicals generated by light. A loss or change in the quality of melanin in melanosomes can lead to the development of senile pathologies and aggravation in the development of various retinal diseases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLipofuscin of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells is a complex heterogeneous system of chromophores which accumulates as granules during the cell's lifespan. Lipofuscin serves as a source of various cytotoxic effects linked with oxidative stress. Several age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration of the retina, as well as some severe inherited eye pathologies, are accompanied by a significant increase in lipofuscin granule concentration.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLipofuscin granules from retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells contain bisretinoid fluorophores, which are photosensitizers and are phototoxic to cells. In the presence of oxygen, bisretinoids are oxidized to form various products, containing aldehydes and ketones, which are also potentially cytotoxic. In a prior study, we identified that bisretinoid oxidation and degradation products have both hydrophilic and amphiphilic properties, allowing their diffusion through the lipofuscin granule membrane into the RPE cell cytoplasm, and are thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-active.

The progressive LG accumulation can somehow lead to pathology and accelerate the aging process. The review examines composition, spectral properties and photoactivity of LGs isolated from the human cadaver eyes.

The purpose of this study was to show the meaning of monitoring the level of mineral trace elements in athletes-wrestlers during physical activity. As an experimental group, 66 male wrestlers aged 18-20 years with at least 3 years of intensive wrestling experience were examined.

The morphology of the gold plated patterned substrate was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), while the quality of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. The electromagnetic (EM) response of the metasurface comprising the graphene sheet and the gold plated substrate was studied by THz time domain spectroscopy in the 100 GHz-1 THz frequency range.

The patients were divided into three subgroups: subgroup 1 included 28 patients who received a conservative treatment with perindopril 10 mg/day; subgroup 2 consisted of 25 patients who underwent coronary stenting and were prescribed perindopril; subgroup 3 consisted of 34 patients who underwent stenting and were prescribed the perindopril/amlodipine combination.

We have studied dark-adaptation at three levels in the eyes of the crustacean Mysis relicta over 2-3 weeks after exposing initially dark-adapted animals to strong white light: regeneration of 11-cis retinal through the retinoid cycle (by HPLC), restoration of native rhodopsin in photoreceptor membranes (by MSP), and recovery of eye photosensitivity (by ERG). We compare two model populations ("Sea", S, and "Lake", L) inhabiting, respectively, a low light and an extremely dark environment. 11-cis retinal reached 60-70% of the pre-exposure levels after 2 weeks in darkness in both populations.

For the treatment of neurological pathology, at the beginning epidural administration of drugs was applied, followed by spinal cord stimulation trial and implantation of permanent neurostimulator. At each stage of treatment conducted by a functional neurosurgeon the patient had a spontaneous restoration of sinus rhythm, and during continuous neurostimulation a stable retention of sinus rhythm and regression of heart failure symptoms have been observed throughout a long observation period.
