[Metastatic penile tumor from lower pharynx: a case report].

Metastatic tumor of the penis is uncommon and only 95 cases have been reported in Japan. A 70-year-old man, who had squamous cell carcinoma of the lower pharynx, complained of urethral induration. Biopsy was performed and pathological diagnosis was metastatic tumor of penis originating from the lower pharynx.

Preparations of 5-alkylmethylidene-3-carboxymethylrhodanine derivatives and their aldose reductase inhibitory activity.

Reactions of 3-carboxymethylrhodanine (1) with aldehydes (2a-u) afforded stereoselectively the 5-mono-alkylmethylidene-3-carboxymethylrhodanines (3a-u). The configuration of the 5-monoalkylmethylidene-3-carboxymethylrhodanine (3k) were examined by X-ray structure analysis and confirmed to be Z-configuration. The stereoselective reaction path was discussed.

Cancer-associated galactosyltransferase as a new tumor marker for ovarian clear cell carcinoma.

Serum cancer-associated galactosyltransferase antigen (caGT) was assayed in gynecological cancer patients by means of a GT-II-reactive monoclonal antibody (MAb 3872)-based immunoassay. Thirty-six of 47 (75%) ovarian cancer patients showed a significant elevation of caGT in serum above the cutoff level of 200 milliunits/ml (mean +/- 2 SD) determined from normal controls. Particularly, serum caGT levels in eight of nine patients with ovarian clear cell carcinoma were above the cutoff value, and six of them gave more than 200 milliunits/ml.

Antiplatelet therapy for atherosclerotic disorders.

Recent studies have revealed the important roles of platelets in atherogenesis via vascular injury. Our in vivo and in vitro studies clearly demonstrate that activated platelets directly inflict injury to vascular endothelial cells, which is associated with a decrease in intracellular cyclic AMP levels in vascular tissues. Antiplatelet therapy is clinically important not only for the prevention of thrombotic episodes but also for the prevention of vascular injury and atherosclerosis.

[The evaluation of CA54/61 in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer--with special reference to the cooperative results of 5 institutes].

The clinical usefulness of a newly developed one-step enzyme-immunoassay, MKS-15, in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer was evaluated with 1,563 serum samples collected at five institutes. In this assay, two monoclonal antibodies, MA54 and MA61, which both recognize the carbohydrate chain in a high molecular weight mucin-type glycoprotein, were used as the immobilized antibody on beads and peroxidase-labeled antibody, respectively. When the cut-off value was set at 20 IU/ml (mean + 3SD), 56% of the sera from ovarian cancer patients were positive, and the positive rates for serous, mucinous, mesonephroid, endometrioid, undifferentiated, and metastatic cancers were 63%, 55%, 52%, 38%, 55%, and 62%, respectively.

Synthesis and aldose reductase-inhibitory activity of benzo[b]furan derivatives possessing a carboxymethylsulfamoyl group.

Various benzo[b]furan derivatives with a carboxymethylsulfamoyl group were prepared and evaluated for aldose reductase-inhibitory potency. Most of the compounds displayed significant inhibitory activities (IC50, 10(-8)-10(-7) M). Among the test compounds, the compounds having a carboxymethylsulfamoyl group at the 3- or 4-position exhibited the greatest inhibitory potency.

[Galactosyltransferase isozyme II (GT-II) as a new tumor marker for ovarian cancers--especially for clear cell carcinoma].

Serum levels of galactosyltransferase (GT) and its isozyme (GT-II), which transfers galactose from UDP-galactose to N-acetylglucosamine etc., in gynecologic malignancies, were assayed. GT activity was assayed with UDP-[3H] galactose and ovalbumin as substrate, and GT-II was assayed by selectively removing GT-II from serum by immunoabsorption with immobilized monoclonal antibody 3872, followed by assay of bound GT activity.

A multichannel FES system for the restoration of motor functions in high spinal cord injury patients: a respiration-controlled system for multijoint upper extremity.

A multichannel functional electrical stimulation (FES) system for the restoration of quadriplegic upper extremity function is described. The system is composed of a personal computer NEC PC-8801mkII, peripheral electronic circuits, CRT display and respiratory sensors for volitional control by the patient, and percutaneous electrodes. A C4 quadriplegic patient could drink canned tea by herself by using this FES system.

Effects of TRK-100, a stable prostacyclin analogue, on regulation of cyclic AMP metabolism in platelets.

TRK-100 is a chemically stable analogue of prostacyclin and effective in inhibiting platelet aggregation when orally administered in experimental animals. In the present study we compared the potency of TRK-100 with those of PGI2 and PGE1 to cause an activation of adenylate cyclase activity in rat and human platelet membranes. TRK-100 was half as effective as PGI2, and 10 times more effective than PGE1 in both platelet membranes.

Tumor-associated mucin-type glycoprotein (CA54/61) defined by two monoclonal antibodies (MA54 and MA61) in ovarian cancers.

Two monoclonal antibodies, MA54 and MA61, were established by immunizing with culture medium supernatants of a lung adenocarcinoma cell line, and a double-determinant sandwich enzyme immunoassay system was developed by using these two monoclonal antibodies. The antigen recognized by this assay (CA54/61) was found to be often high in the sera of several cancers. The antigen recognized by MA54 (CA54) or MA61 (CA61) proved to be carbohydrate chain on a high molecular weight mucin-type glycoprotein, and CA54 has NeuAc alpha 2-6galactose in the terminal residue.

[A case of inverted papilloma of the ureter with malignant findings].

A 70-year-old female with inverted papilloma of the ureter is presented. She was hospitalized because of asymptomatic macrohematuria. Excretory urography and retrograde pyelography demonstrated a filling defect with smooth contour at the mid-portion of the right ureter.
