Growth hormone (GH) is believed to be involved in reproductive function. Recent reports demonstrate the presence of the growth hormone receptors (GHR) in reproductive organs and fetal tissues suggesting that the contribution of GH to reproductive phenomena may be mediated through GHR. In this study we assessed the expression of GHR in mouse preimplantation embryos using immunofluorescent staining with a monoclonal antibody directed against GHR.

Cervical cancer is about 6 times more frequent in Ecuador than in Japan. We investigated the association between infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the genesis of cervical cancer in specimens of lesions of the cervical epithelium obtained from patients in Ecuador and Japan. We also examined the results of HPV DNA detection and typing by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) performed under the same technical conditions in areas with differing rates of cervical cancer.

In vitro co-culture of embryos and somatic cells is used to obtain well-developed embryos of humans and other species. However, it is not known whether direct cell-to-cell contact is essential to embryonic development. To elucidate this mechanism, we cultured mouse embryos using rabbit oviductal cell as a somatic cell.

We analysed aromatase gene expression and its regulation in seven cases of endometrioid endometrial carcinoma. Immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of strong aromatase immunoreactivity in the stromal cells of carcinoma in five out of seven cases. A polymerase chain reaction after reverse transcription (RT PCR) revealed varying levels of aromatase transcripts (0.

Mutations involving the K-ras proto-oncogene are believed to play an important role in the mechanism of tumorigenesis for many human cancers and occur in 10-30% of endometrial carcinomas. In the present study 221 cases of endometrioid endometrial carcinoma obtained from Japanese patients with average follow-up of 41 months were examined for point mutations in codon 12 of K-ras through use of the polymerase chain reaction. In 103 cases lymph node dissection had been performed.

We report here a case of peripheral neuroepithelioma arising in the uterine cervix. A 44-year-old female had complained of irregular genital bleeding for several months and was diagnosed as extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma (EOE) from biopsy specimens initially. The tumor cells, which were intensely stained by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and digested with diastase, were uniformly small and round, had hyperchromatic nuclei and scant, indistinct cytoplasm.

This study was designed to show how accurately the pulsed Doppler fetal blood flow velocimetry reflects fetal blood gas values. Abnormal Doppler umbilical artery (UA) velocimetry was defined when the value deviated from the 95% confidence interval of the normal fetuses. Fetal acidemia, hypoxemia, or hypercapnia was defined when the fetal blood gas taken by funipuncture during pregnancy deviated from the 95% confidence interval of the standard.

We evaluated the immunolocalization of the steroidogenic enzymes involved in the production of ovarian steroids, including the cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme (P450scc), 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD), 17alpha-hydroxylase (P450c17) and aromatase (P450arom), oestrogen receptor (ER) and androgen receptor (AR), a steroidogenic transcription factor. Ad4-binding protein (Ad4BP) and a cell cycle-related nuclear antigen, Ki67, in five patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Results were compared with those from normal cycling human ovaries to study in situ ovarian steroidogenesis and cell proliferation in polycystic ovaries (PCO).

To study the fine structure of fragmentary marker chromosomes, we performed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on samples isolated from two carriers (Case 1: 46, XY/47, XY, +mar/48, XY, +mar, +mar; Case 2: 47, XY, +mar). In both cases, light microscopic observation revealed that marker chromosomes lacked a centromere and were fragmented in appearance. However, SEM observation of the metaphasic cells in both cases showed three variations.

Adrenal 4-binding protein (Ad4BP) is a transcription factor that regulates the expression of steroidogenic enzymes. Ovarian tumors other than sex cord stromal tumors are occasionally associated with functioning stroma or hormonal abnormalities. To determine the steroidogenic potential of these tumors, the authors determined the immunohistochemical distribution of Ad4BP in 75 patients with primary common epithelial tumors (20 cystadenomas, 15 carcinomas of low malignant potential, and 40 carcinomas), and seven patients with metastatic carcinoma of the ovary.

Type 1 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 beta-HSD) is an estrogen-metabolizing enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of estrone to the more biologically potent estradiol. We examined the immunolocalization of 17 beta-HSD in five specimens of normal human ovary and in 51 specimens of common epithelial tumors of the ovary to study the expression of 17 beta-HSD in these ovarian neoplasms. 17 beta-HSD immunoreactivity was detected in granulosa cells of dominant preantral follicles but not in the surface epithelium of the normal cycling human ovary.

We report a case of a rare lesion, a multilocular peritoneal inclusion cyst (MPIC), and describe in detail its appearance on MRI. A young woman with pain of the lower abdomen underwent surgical removal of a mass that was histologically diagnosed as an MPIC. The characteristic MRI features were a multilocular cystic mass with thin septa in the pelvic cavity, located both anterior and posterior to the uterus and the adnexa, showing hypointensity of the cyst contents on T1 images and variable hyperintense signals on T2 images.

We examined the specific number of surgeries necessary for a three-year obstetrics and gynecology resident to acquire proficiency in two types of hysterectomies. Improvement in the technical skills of the residents was assessed using surgical time and blood loss, and resected tumor weight was chosen as the factor representing the difficulty of the surgery. Regarding abdominal total hysterectomy (ATH), early residents (less than 25 ATH experience) performed relatively easier surgeries, and improvement in technical skill was manifested as reduced blood loss by mid residents (25 to 49 ATH) and as shortened surgical time by later residents (75 or more ATH).
