Traditional approaches employing natural plant products to treat a wide array of ailments have been documented and described for thousands of years. However, there remains limited scientific study of the therapeutic potential or effectiveness of ethnobotanical applications. Increases in the incidence of cancer and emerging infectious diseases demonstrate a growing need for advances in the development of therapeutic options.

Background: People with alcohol and substance use disorders (SUDs) often have underlying difficulties in regulating emotions. Although dialectical behavioral therapy is effective for SUDs, it is often difficult to access. Self-guided, internet-delivered dialectical behavioral therapy (iDBT) allows for expanded availability, but few studies have rigorously evaluated it in individuals with SUDs.

The objective of the present study was to find biomechanical correlates of single-task gait and self-reported sleep quality in a healthy, young population by replicating a recently published study.  Young adults (  = 123) were recruited and were asked to complete the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory to assess sleep quality. Gait variables (  = 53) were recorded using a wearable inertial measurement sensor system on an indoor track.

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the mental health and substance use challenges among many people who are Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex (2SLGBTQI+). We aimed to identify the important correlates and their effects on the predicted likelihood of wanting to seek help among 2SLGBTQI+ young adults for mental health or substance use concerns during the pandemic. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2020-2021 among 2SLGBTQI+ young adults aged 16-29 living in two Canadian provinces (Ontario and Quebec).

Failure to obtain the recommended 7−9 h of sleep has been associated with injuries in youth and adults. However, most research on the influence of prior night’s sleep and gait has been conducted on older adults and clinical populations. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify individuals who experience partial sleep deprivation and/or sleep extension the prior night using single task gait.

Literature suggests that anxiety affects gait and balance among young adults. However, previous studies using machine learning (ML) have only used gait to identify individuals who report feeling anxious. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify individuals who report feeling anxious at that time using a combination of gait and quiet balance ML.

Background: A high risk of mental health or substance addiction issues among sexual and gender minority populations may have more nuanced characteristics that may not be easily discovered by traditional statistical methods.

Objective: This review aims to identify literature studies that used machine learning (ML) to investigate mental health or substance use concerns among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) population and direct future research in this field.

Methods: The MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore, and Summon databases were searched from November to December 2020.

: The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with the occurrence and severity of depressive mood states among graduate-level allied health students. Participants: Students ( = 77) completed this study. : Participants completed a series of self-reported surveys measuring moods, lifestyle behaviors, trait mental and physical energy and fatigue, and objective assessments of Trail-Making Test Part-B, and muscle oxygen consumption.

The objective of this study was to take a multi-domain approach to predict feelings of anxiety among graduate allied health students. Participants (n=77) from a small university in upstate New York completed a series of questionnaires [International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form (IPAQ-SF), Rapid Eating Assessment of Participants-Short Form (REAP-S), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI), Profile of Mood Survey-Short Form (POMS-SF), Trait and State Mental and Physical Energy and Fatigue Survey], and their resting metabolic rate, fat free mass and muscle oxygen saturation levels were measured. A backwards linear regression was used to identify predictors of anxiety.

Objectives: In 2014, the National Board of Public Health Examiners performed a job task analysis (JTA) to revise the Certified in Public Health (CPH) examination. The objectives of this study were to describe the development, administration, and results of the JTA survey; to present an analysis of the survey results; and to review the implications of this first-ever public health JTA.

Methods: An advisory committee of public health professionals developed a list of 200 public health job tasks categorized into 10 work domains.

Background/aims: Although disturbed sleep is associated with cognitive deficits, the association between sleep disturbance and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is unclear. In this pilot study, we examined the extent to which sleep duration, sleep quality, and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) are associated with β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition in the brains of living humans.

Methods: We studied 13 older adults (8 with normal cognition and 5 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)).

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by GAA triplet expansions or point mutations in the FXN gene on chromosome 9q13. The gene product called frataxin, a mitochondrial protein that is severely reduced in FRDA patients, leads to mitochondrial iron accumulation, Fe-S cluster deficiency and oxidative damage. The tissue specificity of this mitochondrial disease is complex and poorly understood.

To date, there is little evidence to inform social work practice with lesbian and bisexual women who are trying to conceive (TTC). The authors report a preliminary examination of the mental health experiences of lesbian and bisexual women who are TTC, through a comparison with lesbian and bisexual women in the postpartum period (PP). Thirty-three lesbian and bisexual women (TTC, n = 15; PP, n = 18) completed standardized questionnaires assessing symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as relationship satisfaction and perceived social support.

Background: Duarte galactosemia (DG) is frequently detected in newborn-screening programs. DG patients do not manifest the symptoms of classic galactosemia, but whether they require dietary galactose restriction is controversial. We sought to assess the relationships of selected galactose metabolites (plasma galactose, plasma galactitol, erythrocyte (RBC) galactitol, RBC galactonate, and urine galactitol and galactonate) to RBC galactose 1-phosphate (Gal-1-P), dietary galactose intake, and neurodevelopmental/clinical outcomes in DG children.

The evolution of larger mammals resulted in a corresponding increase in peripheral nerve length. To ensure optimal nervous system functionality and survival, nerve conduction velocities were likely to have increased to maintain the rate of signal propagation. Increases of conduction velocities may have required alterations in one of the two predominant properties that affect the speed of neuronal transmission: myelination or axonal diameter.

Unlabelled: Newborn screening for galactosemia has shown a high prevalence of partial galactose uridyl transferase deficiencies such as Duarte (DG) galactosemia.

Study Objective: To determine whether (a) there is any clinical impact of DG galactosemia on development (b) there is a relationship between outcome and biochemical parameters in patients who receive no treatment.

Study Population: Twenty-eight children with DG galactosemia.

Increased use of left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) as bridges to transplant has revealed the need for short-term right heart support for deairing and right ventricular recovery. The two approaches described are implemented as the patient is weaned from regular cardiopulmonary bypass. Dependent on patient needs, the surgeon may select a high-flow or low-flow approach to what is essentially right heart bypass.
