Objective: To assess vitamin D nutrition status in Asian-Indian patients with fragility hip fracture.

Methods: The study subjects included patients with non-traumatic hip fracture with age more than 50 years. Any patient who sustained fracture after road side accident of any severity was excluded.

Ipsilateral fractures in the neck and trochanteric region of the femur are very rare and seen in elderly osteoporotic patients. We present a case of a young man who presented with ipsilateral fracture of the femoral neck and a reverse oblique fracture in the trochanteric region following a motor vehicle accident. A possible mechanism, diagnostic challenge, and awareness required for identifying this injury are discussed.

Background: Conventionally described standard techniques of forequarter amputation may not be suitable for patients presenting with neglected or maltreated very large tumors of the proximal humerus.

Patients And Methods: Eleven patients with unsalvageable malignant tumors of proximal humerus, who underwent forequarter amputation using a new technique between Jan 2008 to March 2010, were retrospectively analysed. This new single incision anterior approach involves supine positioning of patients, ligation of axillary vessels in the axilla followed by resection of muscles from lateral border and inferior angle of scapula, resection of lateral one-third of clavicle; resection of muscles from vertebral border and superior angle of scapula by applying superolateral traction without any incision over acromioclavicular axis or posterior scapular skin.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polymorphisms of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes are reported to be associated with the possible risk of prostate cancer. OCPs are endocrine disruptors (EDs) which may act by disrupting the physiologic function of endogenous hormones and therefore possibly increase prostate cancer risk. CYP1A1 metabolizes several carcinogens and estrogens, etc.

Dynamics of exploratory behaviour of rats and home base establishment is investigated. Time series of instantaneous speed of rats was computed from their position during exploration. The probability distribution function (PDF) of the speed obeys a power law distribution with exponents ranging from 2.

Agni is the invariable agent in the process of Paka (digestion, transformation). Ingested food is to be digested, absorbed and assimilated, which is unavoidable for the maintenance of life, and is performed by the Agni. Different examples are available in our classics to indicate that Pitta is the same as Agni, but some doubt arises behind this concept, that Pitta is Agni.

Propoxur (2-isopropoxyphenyl N-methylcarbamate) is widely used as an acaricide in agriculture and public health programs. Studies have shown that sub-chronic exposure to propoxur can cause oxidative stress and immuno-suppression in rats. Carbamates are also known to exhibit inhibitory effect on cholinesterase activity, which is directly related to their cholinergic effects.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 and CYP3A4 are important phase I xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes involved in the metabolism of numbers of toxins, endogenous hormones and pharmaceutical drugs. Polymorphisms in these phase I genes can alter enzyme activity and are known to be associated with cancer susceptibility related to environmental toxins and hormone exposure. Their genotypes may also display ethnicity dependent population frequencies.

Objectives: To determine if additional kidney-ureter-bladder radiography in the erect position can improve the diagnostic yield of standard intravenous urography (IVU) examination.

Subjects And Methods: This prospective study was conducted from March to July 2007 on 108 consecutive patients (65 males and 43 females, age ranging from 20 to 50 years) who were referred to the Department of Radiology, Al-Amiri Hospital, Kuwait, for IVU examinations. After 15 min, a film was done in the erect position in addition to the routine IVU protocol.

Subtrochanteric fractures are fraught with anatomical, biological and biomechanical challenges which account for an increased incidence of nonunion and malunion. We retrospectively assessed the results achieved in 40 patients with a mean age of 36 years who were treated with biological plating using a Dynamic Condylar Screw for comminuted subtrochanteric femoral fractures between January 2004 to May 2007. Union was achieved in all cases at a mean of 15.

Introduction: Deformity correction by Illizarov method in haemophilic patients is a rare phenomenon.

Aim: To correct the bilateral knee deformity by Illizarov in one sitting.

Materials And Methods: Patient had fixed flexion deformity (100 degrees ) of both knees; posterior skin webs, posterior subluxation, wasting of quadriceps and <1% level of factor IX.

Immune responses against Bm95 recombinant cattle tick antigen and its protective efficacy for control of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus ticks were determined in experimental crossbred cow calves. Anti-Bm95 antibody titers, as assessed by indirect ELISA, in immunized calves ranged from 196.1+/-13.

Unlabelled: Osteoarticular tuberculosis (TB) in the hip and other joints is increasing and patients in developing countries commonly present with advanced joint destruction. We asked whether TB is reactivated after THA in these patients. We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with an average age of 45 years who had advanced stages of hip destruction secondary to mycobacterium TB and who were treated with primary THA and prescribed perioperative antituberculous medication for 12 to 18 months postoperatively.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of digastric trochanteric flip osteotomy technique in the management of acetabular fractures and to evaluate surgical outcome in terms of fracture reduction, femoral head viability of selected acetabular fractures treated operatively using a digastric trochanteric flip osteotomy and a modified Kocher–Langenbeck approach with surgical dislocation of the femoral head.

Design: Prospective.

Patients: Eighteen patients predominantly with combined transverse and posterior wall fractures or multifragmentary posterior wall fractures.

Tuberculosis of a prosthetic knee joint is rare. Early diagnosis would improve the outcome, but this is usually not achieved. We report the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with a painful and swollen knee joint, 14 years after total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: Tubercular infection has not been described, to our knowledge, in the literature after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and, hence, the purpose of our case series was to describe our experience, evaluate the clinical and laboratory findings, and assess the treatment outcome.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1,152 cases of arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with autografts performed at our institution between January 1998 and May 2007. Tubercular infection was considered to be present in the setting of recurrent negative bacterial cultures but a positive result on microscopy, culture, histopathology, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

An allele-specific PCR was standardized to diagnose the mutation (Phe to Try) at residue 200 of the isotype 1 beta tubulin gene responsible for benzimidazole resistance in Haemonchus contortus adult and infective larvae. Adult and infective larvae of Haemonchus contortus were collected from sheep under different managemental practices (intensive and extensive) in temperate Himalayan regions (Mukteshwar and Kedarkhatta), sub-himalayan region (Pantnagar) of Uttarakhand state and subtropical region of Uttar Pradesh (Bareilly) in north-west India. Genotyping of adult H.

We present the results of the effect of Fe intercalation on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of 1T-VSe(2). Intercalation of iron suppresses the charge density wave transition at 110 K in 1T-VSe(2). And for more than 10% Fe concentration a new kind of first-order transition appears below 160 K in our resistivity results.
