The production of municipal sludge is steadily increasing in line with the production of sewage. A wealth of organic contaminants, including nutrients and energy, are present in municipal sludge. Anaerobic fermentation can be used to extract useful resources from sludge, producing hydrogen, methane, short-chain fatty acids, and, via further chain elongation, medium-chain fatty acids.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chain elongation technology enhances anaerobic digestion by using microorganisms to convert waste biomass into valuable medium-chain fatty acids, diverging from traditional methods that require specific substrates.
  • - The process faces challenges such as toxic by-products and competition among microorganisms, which hinder its industrial application.
  • - The study reviews current research on electron donors, competition, toxicity issues, and offers suggestions for future advancements in chain elongation technology to encourage further exploration in the field.
