H3K9 methylation regulates heterochromatin silencing through incoherent feedforward loops.

Histone H3 lysine-9 methylation (H3K9me) is a hallmark of the condensed and transcriptionally silent heterochromatin. It remains unclear how H3K9me controls transcription silencing and how cells delimit H3K9me domains to avoid silencing essential genes. Here, using genetic systems that induce H3K9me2 in genes and transposons de novo, we show that H3K9me2 accumulation paradoxically also causes the deposition of the euchromatic mark H3K36me3 by a SET domain methyltransferase, ASHH3.

Case Series of Endoscopic Papillary Balloon Dilation for Children with Common Bile Duct Stones and a Review of the Literature.

: Endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) has been employed for the endoscopic treatment of common bile duct stones (CBDSs) and has been reported to have a high success rate for stone removal. However, EST is associated with a risk of bleeding, perforation, and sphincter of Oddi function disruption. To avoid these risks, endoscopic papillary balloon dilation (EPBD) is an option for CBDS.

Rhodium-catalysed additive-free alkoxycarbonylation of indoles: 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid-based carbonate anhydrides as a versatile alkoxycarboxyl source.

We report a CO-free approach to indole-2-carboxylic esters: rhodium-catalysed C(2)-alkoxycarbonylation of indoles with 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic acid-based carbonate anhydrides. Selective C-O bond cleavage of the anhydrides facilitates the introduction of various alkoxycarbonyl groups. Control experiments suggest that merging a rhodium catalyst and KI promotes the formation of the RhI species.

A 6-year-old girl previously diagnosed with hereditary spherocytosis was admitted to our hospital with gallstones and cholangitis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed, and fluoroscopy revealed a dilated common bile duct (CBD) without evident stones, possibly due to spontaneous excretion through the papilla of Vater. A 7-French plastic stent was inserted into the CBD.

Background: In Japan there are limited opportunities for pediatricians to learn gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. This study investigated whether a short-term intensive training for 2 weeks in an adult GI setting enabled pediatricians to acquire basic technical competence for pediatric GI endoscopic procedures.

Methods: This was a retrospective case series of pediatricians who underwent 2 weeks of intensive endoscopy training at an adult endoscopy unit in a community hospital.

Cap-assisted colonoscopy can increase the rate of sessile serrated lesion detection at the left lateral decubitus position: A retrospective case-control study.

We investigated the effectiveness of cap-assisted colonoscopy conducted with the patient in the left lateral decubitus position at both the colonoscope's insertion and withdrawal timepoints compared to the effectiveness of colonoscopy without a cap conducted in the supine position at withdrawal. This was a case-control study, based on historical comparisons of patients over 2 time periods. The first group of patients underwent colonoscopies with a transparent cap and the patient was in the left lateral decubitus position at both the insertion and withdrawal timepoints from April to June 2019.

Colony size in social insects is one of the most important factors in shaping their self-organized system. It affects a wide variety of traits such as foraging and defense strategies, social immune responses, the degree of polymorphism, and reproductive output. However, colony size estimation of subterranean termites in the field has been challenging, due to their extremely cryptic biology and multiple site-nesting behavior.

The aim of this study was to establish a method of measuring plaque solidity with noncontrast computed tomography (CT).

Introduction: Few researchers have investigated the optimal long-term antithrombotic therapy regimen, especially after first-generation drug-eluting stent (DES) use. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mid-term antithrombotic therapy on long-term outcomes in patients treated with the first sirolimus-eluting coronary stent (Cypher™).

Methods: Between 2004 and 2009, 1021 patients underwent Cypher™ implantation at our institute; among them, 567 patients had available data on antithrombotic therapy at year 5.

Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 175 advanced cancer patients who were receiving pain treatment with opioids and were newly prescribed laxatives for OIC at Seirei Hamamatsu General Hospital between November 2016 and June 2021. For the regression analysis of factors associated with OIC, variables were extracted manually from clinical records.

Background: Studies suggest that fragmented QRS (fQRS) can predict arrhythmic events in various cardiac diseases. However, the association between fQRS recordings on intracardiac electrogram (EGM) and ventricular arrhythmic events remains unknown.

Methods: We enrolled 51 patients (age, 62 ± 12 years; 40 men) with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and structural heart disease and evaluated surface electrocardiogram (ECG) and EGM measurement of fQRS and the association between fQRS and arrhythmic events.

A Case of ST-Elevation Acute Myocardial Infarction in a Nonhospitalized Patient with SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia: Treatment with Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

We experienced a case of primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using appropriate infection prevention protocol. However, recanalization was difficult due to severe coagulopathy. Further researches are needed to clarify optimal treatment for STEMI in patients with COVID-19.
