Dramatic lifestyle changes due to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident increased the prevalence of hepatobiliary enzyme abnormalities (HEA). We aimed to evaluate associations of HEA with specific lifestyle- and disaster-related factors in residents who lived near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.This cross-sectional study included 22,246 residents who underwent a Comprehensive Health Check and the Mental Health and Lifestyle Survey from June 2011 to March 2012.

Medical Student Reactions to Disaster after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake: Motivation and Posttraumatic Growth.

Medical students often become involved as post-disaster emergency responders despite incomplete training, and in doing so may suppress their immediate experiences as victims and survivors. This experience, however, may lead them to increase their motivation to help others. We examined how cognitive and emotional reactions to disaster correlated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) in medical students in Fukushima, Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011.

Clinical effects of recombinant thrombomodulin and defibrotide on sinusoidal obstruction syndrome after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is a lethal complication after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Defibrotide (DF) is the only drug internationally recommended for SOS treatment in Western countries. Recombinant human soluble thrombomodulin (rhTM), which is promising for the treatment of patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation, is also reported to be potentially effective for SOS.

Associations of disaster-related and psychosocial factors with changes in smoking status after a disaster: a cross-sectional survey after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Objective: Few studies have comprehensively examined changes in smoking status and related factors after a disaster. We examined these factors among residents of an evacuation area in Fukushima after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Methods: The study participants included 58 755 men and women aged ≥20 years who participated in the Fukushima Health Management Survey in 2012 after the disaster.

Val 108/158 Met polymorphism and treatment response to aripiprazole in patients with acute schizophrenia.

Introduction: The Val 108/158 Met polymorphism (rs4680) may affect treatment response to antipsychotics, as well as metabolism and dynamics of neurotransmitters during the treatment of schizophrenia. We investigated the effects of the Val 108/158 Met polymorphism on treatment response to aripiprazole and plasma monoamine metabolite levels in patients with acute schizophrenia.

Materials And Methods: Forty patients with schizophrenia were treated with aripiprazole for 6 weeks.

Changes in Risk Perception of the Health Effects of Radiation and Mental Health Status: The Fukushima Health Management Survey.

After the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, numerous evacuees reported poor mental health status and high-risk perceptions of the health effects of radiation. However, the temporal associations between these variables have not yet been examined. Using data from the Fukushima Health Survey, we examined changes in risk perception of the health effects of radiation over time and assessed the effects of mental health on such changes using logistic regression analysis.

The Relationship between Sleep Time and Mental Health Problems According to the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in Children after an Earthquake Disaster: The Fukushima Health Management Survey.

A cross-sectional study was performed on the adverse effects of sleep time on the mental health of children after the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent nuclear reactor accident in March 2011. The target participants were children aged 4-15 years living inside the government-designated evacuation zone as of 11 March 2011 ( = 29,585). The participants' parents/guardians completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and sleep time data were obtained from the 2011 Fukushima Health Management Survey.

Treatment outcome of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: the Tokyo Children's Cancer Study Group (TCCSG) Study L04-16.

The survival rate of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has increased to approximately 90% after substantial progress in risk-oriented treatment strategies. Between 2005 and 2013, the Tokyo Children's Cancer Study Group (TCCSG) conducted a risk-oriented, non-randomized study, L04-16. The principal aim of this study was to assemble background characteristics and treatment outcomes, and gather genetic information on leukemic cells under central diagnosis.

Advanced Lung Adenocarcinoma with Nivolumab-associated Dermatomyositis.

We herein report a 42-year-old man with advanced lung adenocarcinoma and nivolumab-associated dermatomyositis. Nivolumab, an anticancer drug that is classified as an immune checkpoint inhibitor, often induces immune-related adverse events (irAEs). However, there have so far been no reports regarding nivolumab-associated dermatomyositis.

DNA methylation of ANKK1 and response to aripiprazole in patients with acute schizophrenia: A preliminary study.

Epigenetic modification including DNA methylation may affect pathophysiology and the response to antipsychotic drugs in patients with schizophrenia. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the DNA methylation of ANKK1 (ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing 1) on the response to aripiprazole and plasma levels of monoamine metabolites in antipsychotic-free acute schizophrenia patients. The subjects were 34 Japanese patients with schizophrenia who had been treated with aripiprazole for 6 weeks.

The Clinical Findings Useful for Driving Safety Advice for Parkinson's Disease Patients.

Objective We conducted a study to obtain information that could be used to provide Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with appropriate advice on safe driving. Methods Consecutive PD patients who visited our office were studied. Among these patients, those who had experienced driving after being diagnosed with PD were interviewed by neurologists and a trained nurse to investigate their previous car accidents, motor function, cognitive function, sleepiness, levodopa equivalent dose (LED), and emotional dysregulation.

Role of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate in the pharmacokinetic interaction between nadolol and green tea in healthy volunteers.

Purpose: The aim of the present study is to investigate a possible role of a single dose of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the major catechin in green tea, for the pharmacokinetic interaction between green tea and nadolol in humans.

Methods: In a randomized three-phase crossover study, 13 healthy volunteers received single doses of 30 mg nadolol orally with water (control), or an aqueous solution of EGCG-concentrated green tea extract (GTE) at low or high dose. Plasma concentrations and urinary excretion of nadolol were determined up to 48 h.

Lack of pharmacokinetic interaction between fluvastatin and green tea in healthy volunteers.

Purpose: The objective of this study is to assess the effects of green tea and its major catechin component, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), on CYP2C9-mediated substrate metabolism in vitro, and the pharmacokinetics of fluvastatin in healthy volunteers.

Methods: The metabolism of diclofenac and fluvastatin in human recombinant CYP2C9 was investigated in the presence of EGCG. In a randomized three-phase crossover study, 11 healthy volunteers ingested a single 20-mg dose of fluvastatin with green tea extract (GTE), containing 150 mg of EGCG, along with water (300 mL), brewed green tea (300 mL), or water (300 mL) after overnight fasting.

Frontal activity measured by near-infrared spectroscopy in patients taking different atypical antipsychotic drugs: A cross-sectional study.

Using near-infrared spectroscopy, we examined changes in the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin ([oxy-Hb]) in the frontal lobe during a verbal fluency task in 20 patients with schizophrenia (10 patients each receiving olanzapine [OLZ] and risperidone [RIS]) and 10 healthy controls. We found that [oxy-Hb] levels in the prefrontal region were higher in the patients receiving OLZ than in those receiving RIS. These results suggest that antipsychotic drugs have different effects on cerebral hemodynamic patterns, which may reflect frontal lobe function.

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency.

The clinical outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was retrospectively analyzed in 6 patients with leukocyte adhesion deficiency. Of 3 patients transplanted with myeloablative conditioning, 2 patients had complete chimerism and 1 patient had mixed chimerism. By contrast, all 3 patients transplanted with reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) had mixed chimerism, one of whom progressed to secondary graft failure.
