The iron(III) chloride compound 6,6'-di(3,5-di-butyl-2-hydroxybenzene)-2,2'-bipyridine (Fe(dhbpy)Cl) can effectively catalyze the electrochemical CO reduction in ,-dimethylformamide. Density functional calculations were conducted to investigate the mechanism and unravel the governing factors of product selectivity. The results suggest that the initial catalyst, Fe(dhbpy)Cl (formally Fe-Cl), undergoes two reduction steps, accompanied by the dissociation of Cl, leading to the formation of the active ferrous radical intermediate (formally Fe).

  • The treatment of gastric cancer (GC) is a significant global health challenge, and N6-methyladenosine (m6A) has been found to play a key role in tumor progression.
  • METTL5, a methyltransferase linked to m6A, has been shown to be upregulated in GC, suggesting that higher levels of METTL5 are associated with poor patient outcomes and advanced cancer characteristics.
  • The study conducted a series of experiments including cell assays and animal models, demonstrating that METTL5 promotes GC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while also affecting sphingomyelin metabolism and the cell's sensitivity to cisplatin.

  • The tetradentate PNNP-type Ir complex Mes-IrPCY2 ([Cl-Ir-H]) is an effective catalyst for converting CO to formate under visible light, showing high selectivity for this reaction.
  • Density functional calculations reveal that the double-reduced complex 1-H ([Ir-H]) is more active than the single-reduced complex 2-H ([Ir(L˙)-H]), largely due to its superior hydride donor ability, making 1-H the key species in the CO reduction process.
  • The hydride of 1-H facilitates a nucleophilic attack on CO to produce formate, while also indicating that the CO reduction is favored over hydrogen evolution in line with experimental findings.

The model organism , as a species of Holometabola, undergoes a series of transformations during metamorphosis. To deeply understand its development, it is crucial to study its anatomy during the key developmental stages. We describe the anatomical systems of the thorax, including the endoskeleton, musculature, nervous ganglion, and digestive system, from the late pupal stage to the adult stage, based on micro-CT and 3D visualizations.

  • Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a significant role in the immune response within solid tumors, but the effects of combining TLR agonists like palmitic acid (PA) and γ-interferon (γ-IFN) on gastric cancer (GC) remain unclear.
  • This study analyzed how PA and γ-IFN affect macrophage polarization and tumor cell behavior using various laboratory methods, including PCR, flow cytometry, and animal models to assess their impact on GC.
  • Results indicated that the combination of PA and γ-IFN promotes a shift toward M1-like macrophages while reducing M2-like macrophages, leading to impaired growth and movement of GC cells, an effect that was neg

  • This study researched how effective piezosurgery (PI) is for promoting immediate clotting after tooth extractions in patients taking dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT).
  • In the trial, 80 patients were split into two groups, one using PI and the other using a turbine handpiece (TH) for flapless tooth extraction, with results showing higher clotting rates and fewer complications in the PI group.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that using PI could improve immediate clotting post-extraction compared to TH, making it a beneficial option for patients on DAPT.

The phosphine-substituted Ru(II) polypyridyl complex, [Ru-(tpy)(pqn)(MeCN)] (RuP), was disclosed to be an efficient photocatalyst for the reduction of CO to CO with excellent selectivity. In this work, density functional calculations were performed to elucidate the reaction mechanism and understand the origin of selectivity. The calculations showed that RuP was first excited to the singlet excited state, followed by intersystem crossing to produce a triplet species (3RuIII(L˙-)-S), which was then reduced by the sacrificial electron donor BIH to generate a Ru(L˙) intermediate.

Strong nonspecific protein/cell adhesion on conducting polymer (CP)-based bioelectronic devices can cause an increase in the impedance or the malfunction of the devices. Incorporating oligo(ethylene glycol) or zwitterionic functionalities with CPs has demonstrated superior performance in the reduction of nonspecific adhesion. However, there is no report on the evaluation of the antifouling stability of oligo(ethylene glycol) and zwitterion-functionalized CPs under electrical stimulation as a simulation of the real situation of device operation.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) is one type of important non-coding RNAs that participate in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. In our previous study, we performed a microarray analysis of circRNAs between the tumor tissues and the adjacent normal tissues of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, and found that the circRNA hsa_circ_0007456 is significantly downregulated in the tumor tissues and correlated with the prognosis of HCC. We further investigated the relationship between the expression levels of hsa_circ_0007456 in HCC and the susceptibility of NK cells, and found that the expression levels of hsa_circ_0007456 in HCC cell lines significantly influenced their susceptibility to NK cells.

  • N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes, specifically Mn-NHC, show potential for catalyzing the reduction of CO, but some variants have low activity and require very negative voltage.
  • A new complex, -[Mn(bis-NHC)(CO)Br], demonstrates high catalytic activity (TOF = 3180 ± 6 s) for the electrochemical reduction of CO at less negative potentials thanks to the bulky Mes groups.
  • A key intermediate, a "dimer" form of the one-electron-reduced complex, was identified and characterized, revealing insights into the reaction mechanism involving the rate-limiting step of further reduction.

Zwitterionic poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is an effective electronic material for bioelectronics because it exhibits efficient electrical trade-off and diminishes immune response. To promote the use of zwitterionic PEDOTs in bioelectronic devices, especially for cell alignment control and close electrocoupling, features such as tunable interaction of PEDOTs with proteins/cells and spatially modulating cell behavior are required. However, there is a lack of reliable methods to assemble zwitterionic EDOTs with other functionalized EDOT materials, having different polarities and oxidation potentials, to prepare PEDOTs with the aforementioned surface properties.

  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence and structure of the mandibular incisive canal (MIC) in healthy, periodontitis, and edentulous mandibles using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) on 1,070 hemimandibles.
  • Results showed that the MIC was present in 92.8% of cases, with no major differences between healthy and periodontitis mandibles, though males had a higher prevalence than females, and dentate mandibles had more MIC cases than edentulous ones.
  • The study concluded that due to the variability in MIC size and path, careful consideration is necessary during surgeries involving the anterior mandible.

Alterations to the gut microbiota have been previously suggested to be tightly linked to chronic systemic inflammation, which is a major contributing factor to complications and disease progression in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Nevertheless, the effect of gut dysbiosis on the pathogenesis and/or production of inflammatory factors in CKD has not been extensively studied to date. In the present study, we conducted 16S ribosomal DNA pyrosequencing using fecal microbiota samples and analyzed the production of serum inflammatory factors in 50 patients with CKD and 22 healthy control (HC) subjects.

The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO) to fuels or value-added chemicals by a photocatalytic system has recently been of growing research interest. One of the challenges is the development of new catalysts with high activity and low cost. Cobalt complexes have long been used as catalysts for the reduction of CO in either electrochemical or photochemical systems.
