Article Synopsis
  • An experimental setup and standard operating procedure (SOP) are created to gather detailed data on gas emissions and fire behavior during the thermal runaway of lithium-ion battery cells.
  • The experiments involve conditioning a 18650 cylindrical cell to various states-of-charge, then inducing thermal runaway with a controlled heating method while measuring gas concentrations and observing key events using camcorders.
  • The collected data helps analyze the cell's characteristics, such as gas compositions and mass loss, which can aid in developing models for understanding lithium-ion battery fires and could be adapted for different cell types.

This study conducted a comprehensive characterization and analyses on the fire-resistant behaviors of novel fungal fibers grown with substrate containing Silica (Si) source at multiple scales. At micro-scale, the results of SEM showed that silica affected the physiological activities of fungi, with the extent of effects depending upon its concentration. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra displayed the existence of Si-O-C chemical bonds in fungal fibers grown with Si source, indicating that Si source becomes a part of the structure of fungal fibers.
