Background: The radiology, obstruction, symptoms and exposure (ROSE) criteria provide a standardised approach for identifying the "COPD-bronchiectasis (BE) association." However, the clinical implications and outcomes of the COPD-BE association in East Asian populations remain unclear. Our study applied the ROSE criteria to assess the prevalence, clinical impact and outcomes of the COPD-BE association in an East Asian cohort, and compared that cohort with nonsmoking BE patients with fixed airflow obstruction (FAO) and those without FAO.

Objectives: Associations of ABO blood group specifying transferases A/B (ABO) and fucosyltransferase 2 (FUT2) with CP remain inconclusive. We aimed to comprehensively investigate the associations by Chinese sequencing cohorts and external cohorts.

Methods: First, we analyzed the distributions of ABO blood groups and FUT2 status, along with lead single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at ABO (rs8176693 C/T) and FUT2 (rs632111 A/G) gene loci in Chinese low-coverage whole-genome sequencing discovery cohort.

CYP97C1 as a haem-containing cytochrome P450 hydroxylase (P450-type) is important for carotene hydroxylation and xanthophyll biosynthesis. Research about this type of hydroxylase was mainly reported in several model plant species which have no specialized tissues accumulating massive carotenoids. The function of CYP97C1 in the horticultural plant, like carrots, was not fully studied.

  • Chlorophyll is crucial for celery quality, and RNA editing in chloroplasts plays a key role in its development and chlorophyll production.
  • The study identified 8 MORF genes in celery, which regulate chloroplast RNA editing, and analyzed their properties and evolutionary relationships with similar plants.
  • Results indicated that specific MORF genes are more highly expressed in green celery versus white celery, suggesting their significant role in chlorophyll accumulation and chloroplast development.

Background: In bronchiectasis, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) lung disease (NTM-LD) is a well-known coexisting infection. However, microorganism coisolates and clinical NTM-LD predictors are poorly studied.

Methods: Patients with bronchiectasis diagnosed by means of computed tomography between January 2017 and June 2020 were screened, using the date of computed tomography as the index date.

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a complex disease with genetic and environmental factors at play. Through trio exome sequencing, a de novo SEC16A frameshift variant in a Chinese teenage CP patient is identified. Subsequent targeted next-generation sequencing of the SEC16A gene in 1,061 Chinese CP patients and 1,196 controls reveals a higher allele frequency of rare nonsynonymous SEC16A variants in patients (4.

In Chinese criminal law, the ages of 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old play a significant role in the determination of criminal responsibility. In this study, we developed an epiphyseal grading system based on magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the hand and wrist for the Chinese Han population and explored the feasibility of employing deep learning techniques for bone age assessment based on MRI of the hand and wrist. This study selected 282 Chinese Han Chinese males aged 6.

Article Synopsis
  • Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells can produce special proteins called cytokines when they are stimulated by a substance called α-GalCer.
  • A new version of this substance, called C34, has been found to work even better against certain cancers in mice, like breast cancer and melanoma.
  • C34 helps the immune system fight neuroblastoma (a type of cancer) by boosting the number of important immune cells in the liver and reducing bad cells that help tumors grow, leading to longer survival for the mice.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to validate a simplified radiological scoring system for evaluating clinical symptoms and outcomes in Taiwanese patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB).
  • It involved analyzing data from 2,753 patients, assessing their bronchiectasis type and severity using a modified Reiff score derived from high-resolution CT scans, and correlating these with clinical features such as lung function and hospitalization rates.
  • The findings indicated that as the severity of bronchiectasis increased, patients experienced worse symptoms and lung function, and identified factors like age and pneumonia as independent predictors of mortality, suggesting the scoring system's utility in clinical assessments.

Little is known about the factors regulating carotenoid biosynthesis in roots. In this study, we characterized DCAR_032551, the candidate gene of the Y locus responsible for the transition of root color from ancestral white to yellow during carrot (Daucus carota) domestication. We show that DCAR_032551 encodes a REPRESSOR OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC GENES (RPGE) protein, named DcRPGE1.

Solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries have shown prospects as safe, high-energy electrochemical storage technology for powering regional electrified transportation. Owing to limited ion mobility in crystalline polymer electrolytes, the battery is incapable of operating at subzero temperature. Addition of liquid plasticizer into the polymer electrolyte improves the Li-ion conductivity yet sacrifices the mechanical strength and interfacial stability with both electrodes.

Betalains are tyrosine-derived plant pigments exclusively found in the Caryophyllales order and some higher fungi and generally classified into two groups: red-violet betacyanins and yellow-orange betaxanthins. Betalains attract great scientific and economic interest because of their relatively simple biosynthesis pathway, attractive colors and health-promoting properties. Co-expressing two core genes and with or without a glycosyltransferase gene allowed the engineering of carrot (an important taproot vegetable) to produce a palette of unique colors.
