Background: Smoking status at point of diagnosis is not used in defining risk groups for human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) despite its prognostic value in head and neck cancer.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of consecutive patients treated with chemoradiotherapy between January 2005 and July 2017 was performed with multivariable analysis to explore the impact of smoking status at diagnosis (current/former/never) on overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and progression-free survival (PFS).
Results: Median follow-up was 61 months.
Aim: This study aimed to reveal the effects of icaritin (ICT) on lipotoxicity induced by palmitate (PA) in hepatic cells and steatosis in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice as well as exploring the potential mechanisms.
Main Methods: Primary mouse hepatocytes and human hepatoma Huh7 cells were used to evaluate ICT effect in vitro. HFD-fed mice were used to evaluate the ICT effect in vivo.

Among various localization methods, a localization method that uses a radio frequency signal-based wireless sensor network has been widely applied due to its robustness against noise factors and few limits on installation location. In this paper, we focus on an iterative localization scheme for a mobile with a limited number of time difference of arrival (TDOA) and angle of arrival (AOA) data measured from base stations. To acquire the optimal location of a mobile, we propose a recursive solution for localization using an iteratively reweighted-recursive least squares (IR-RLS) algorithm.

These changes can elicit endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, protein misfolding, and cell death. ER stress triggers the unfolded protein response (UPR), which can promote recovery of ER proteostasis and cell survival or trigger programmed cell death.

Previous studies are focused on the methods of the tool path generation and verification of zero-rake-angle tools. However, these methods are unsuitable for non-zero-rake tools that are used for machining hard-and-brittle materials.

Previous study indicates that hyperoxia causes oxidative damage to neonatal kidney and impairs renal development. However, the underlying mechanisms by which neonatal hyperoxia effects on immature kidney still need to be elucidated.

Grinding and polishing are the main processes to realize optical surface finish on binderless WC mold inserts. The laser assisted turning (LAT) by in-process heating is an efficient method to enhance the machinability of hard and brittle materials.

The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in grave morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is currently no effective drug to cure COVID-19. Based on analyses of available data, we deduced that excessive prostaglandin E (PGE) produced by cyclooxygenase-2 was a key pathological event of COVID-19.

Precision glass molding is the most appropriate method for batch production of glass lenses with high surface accuracy and qualified optical performance. However, the form error caused by material expansion and contraction is the main factor affecting the precision of the molded lenses, thus the mold must be pre-compensated. In this paper, an effective method of mold pre-compensation based on mathematical analysis is established.

Excessive ethanol consumption causes cellular damage, leading to fetal alcohol syndrome and alcohol liver diseases, which are frequently seen with vitamin D (VD) deficiency. A great deal of progress has been achieved in the mechanisms of ethanol-induced hepatocyte damage. However, there are limited intervention means to reduce or rescue hepatocytes damage caused by ethanol.

In mobile ultrasound instruments, the sensitivity of piezoelectric transducers is a critical parameter under limited power supply from portable batteries. Therefore, the enhancement of the output voltage amplitude of the amplifier under limited power supply could increase the sensitivity of the piezoelectric transducer.

Due to its geometric properties, the analysis and operation of functional connectivity matrices may well be performed on the Riemannian manifold of the SPD space. Analysis of functional networks on the SPD space takes account of all the pairwise interactions (edges) as a whole, which differs from the conventional rationale of considering edges as independent from each other.

However, whether there is a subset of patients who were with high risk of regional failure and may benefit from regional treatment is still unknown. The current study was designed to identify the patients with high risk of RR, thereby providing clues for enhanced regional therapy.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in the development of radioresistance due to their functions in regulating the expression of target genes at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels. Exploring key lncRNAs and elucidating the mechanisms contributing to radioresistance are crucial for the development of effective strategies to reverse radioresistance, which however remains challenging.

Therefore, amplifier performance is vital because it determines the acoustic piezoelectric transducer performances. Particularly, mobile ultrasound applications have strict battery performance and current consumption requirements; hence, amplifier devices should exhibit good efficiency because the direct current (DC) voltage in the battery are provided to the supply voltages of the amplifier, thus limiting the maximum DC drain voltages of the main transistors in the amplifier.

Electrochemical micro-sensors made of nano-graphitic (NG) carbon materials could offer high sensitivity and support voltammetry measurements at vastly different temporal resolutions. Here, we implement a configurable CMOS biochip for measuring low concentrations of bio-analytes by leveraging these advantageous features of NG micro-sensors. In particular, the core of the biochip is a discrete-time ∆Σ modulator, which can be configured for optimal power consumption according to the temporal resolution requirements of the sensing experiments while providing a required precision of ≈ 13 effective number of bits.

Currently, there is a growing interest in understanding the cellular and molecular events of immune-cell trafficking and recruitment of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in liver diseases. Aberrant activation of HSCs is the key event leading to chronic liver fibrosis. However, the underlying mechanisms of the recruitment of HSCs in a locally injured liver are not clearly understood.
