Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates whether annual fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) are necessary for patients who recently had a total colonoscopy (TCS) in Japan, as current guidelines recommend annual FIT screening but lack consensus for these patients.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 671 patients with positive FIT results, dividing them into those who had a TCS within the past 5 years and those who had not, and found that those with recent TCS had significantly lower rates of advanced neoplasia (4.6% vs. 12.1%).
  • The conclusion suggests that patients with adenomatous lesions should follow their surveillance program with repeat TCS instead of annual FIT, while the necessity of annual FIT

Dietary factors, particularly proteins, have been extensively explored to combat cognitive impairment. We have previously reported that dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein (APP) is more effective than casein (CAS) or fish oil in maintaining short-term memory in senescence-accelerated mice prone 10 (SAMP10). To examine the specificity of the protective effect of APP intakes against short-term memory decline, we assessed the impact of various dietary animal proteins, including APP, CAS, chicken breast protein (CP), and whey protein (WP), against age-related cognitive function in SAMP10 mice.

Background: The mutations in the presenilin 1 gene (PSEN1) are the main cause of familial Alzheimer's disease. PSEN1 mutations affect amyloid-beta peptide production, which accumulates in the brain as senile plaque and cotton wool plaques (CWPs) and relates to other neurodegenerative disorders. Here we report the second case of the PSEN1 G266S mutation, which showed distinctive neuropathological features, including abundant CWPs.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Parkinsonism-Dementia Complex (ALS/PDC), a rare and complex neurological disorder, is predominantly observed in the Western Pacific islands, including regions of Japan, Guam, and Papua. This enigmatic condition continues to capture medical attention due to affected patients displaying symptoms that parallel those seen in either classical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Parkinson's disease (PD). Distinctly, postmortem examinations of the brains of affected individuals have shown the presence of α-synuclein aggregates and TDP-43, which are hallmarks of PD and classical ALS, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study of 283 AD patients treated with upadacitinib (15 mg or 30 mg) revealed significant reductions in eczema severity and itchiness over 48 weeks, alongside decreased total eosinophil counts (TEC).
  • * The changes in TEC correlated with improvements in eczema and itch scores, suggesting TEC may serve as a potential biomarker for monitoring treatment response; however, further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness for this purpose.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the viscoelastic properties of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) samples in water and sodium chloride solutions, focusing on their specific viscosity, average relaxation time, and steady-state compliance across varying concentrations.
  • - Key relationships were identified that suggest the behavior of NaCMC can be modeled as that of rod-like particles, particularly at lower concentrations before gel formation occurs.
  • - A theoretical model for rod particle suspensions was applied to explain the data, effectively linking the viscoelastic behaviors of different NaCMC samples with varying degrees of substitution and molar masses.

Removal of somatic histone H3 lysine 9 trimethylation (H3K9me3) from the embryonic genome can improve the efficiency of mammalian cloning using somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). However, this strategy involves the injection of histone demethylase mRNA into embryos, which is limiting because of its invasive and labor-consuming nature. Here, we report that treatment with an inhibitor of G9a (G9ai), the major histone methyltransferase that introduces H3K9me1/2 in mammals, greatly improved the development of mouse SCNT embryos.

Background: We aimed to improve the prognosis, treatment, and management of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) by evaluating the association between adherence to quality indicators (QIs) and clinical outcomes in patients with their clinical outcomes.

Methods: We retrospectively collected clinical and microbiological data on hospitalized patients with SAB from 14 hospitals (three with >  600, two with 401-600, five with 201-400, and four with ≤ 200 beds) in Japan from January to December 2022. The SAB management quality was evaluated using the SAB-QI score (ranging from 0 to 13 points), which consists of 13 QIs (grouped into five categories) based on previous literature.

Purpose: The image contrast of postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may differ from that of antemortem MRI because of circulator arrest, changes in postmortem tissue, and low-body-temperature scanning conditions. In fact, we have found that the signal intensity of white matter (WM) on T1-weighted spin-echo (T1WSE) images of the postmortem brain was lower than that of gray matter (GM), which resulted in image contrast reversal between GM and WM relative to the living brain. However, the reason for this phenomenon is unclear.

complex (MAC) is a non-tuberculous mycobacterium widely distributed in the environment. Even though MAC infection is increasing in older women and immunocompromised patients, to our knowledge there has been no comprehensive analysis of the MAC-infected host-cell transcriptome-and particularly of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). By using cultured primary mouse bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and Cap analysis of gene expression, we analyzed the transcriptional and kinetic landscape of macrophage genes, with a focus on lncRNAs, during MAC infection.
