Purpose: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is widely acknowledged as one of the interventions for preventing hypoxic ischemic brain injury in comatose patients following cardiac arrest (CA). Despite its recognized efficacy, recent debates have questioned its effectiveness. This preclinical study evaluated the impact of TH on brain glucose metabolism, utilizing fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in a rat model of CA.

The use of convalescent plasma (CP) for prior respiratory pandemics provided a strong biological rationale for the rapid deployment of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) in early 2020 when no validated treatments or prior immunity existed. CCP is an antiviral agent, with its activity against SARS-CoV-2 stemming from specific antibodies elicited by the virus.

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has gained prominence with the increasing trends towards conservative dental treatment with specific indications for preserving tooth vitality by selectively removing the inflamed tissue instead of the entire dental pulp. Although VPT has shown high success rates in long-term follow-up, adverse effects have been reported due to the calcification of tooth canals by mineral trioxide aggregates (MTAs), which are commonly used in VPT. Canal calcification poses challenges for accessing instruments during retreatment procedures.

Comparative analysis of molecular and histological glioblastomas: insights into prognostic variance.

Purpose: Whether molecular glioblastomas (GBMs) identify with a similar dismal prognosis as a "classical" histological GBM is controversial. This study aimed to compare the clinical, molecular, imaging, surgical factors, and prognosis between molecular GBMs and histological GBMs.

Methods: Retrospective chart and imaging review was performed in 983 IDH-wildtype GBM patients (52 molecular GBMs and 931 histological GBMs) from a single institution between 2005 and 2023.

This case report focuses on a patient with systemic lupus erythematous whose first symptom was dacryoadenitis. A 42-year-old Asian woman presented with a 3-day history of left periorbital swelling and pain. Gross examination revealed left periorbital swelling with no definite tenderness.

Implementation of a Numerically Stable Algorithm for Capillary Hysteresis in Gas Hydrate Deposits.

We develop a numerically stable algorithm of intrinsic capillary hysteresis for numerical simulation of gas hydrate deposits where cyclic drainage and imbibition processes occur. The algorithm is motivated by the elastoplastic return mapping, and it is an extension of the recently developed algorithm of two-phase immiscible flow, which provides numerical stability with the fully implicit method. We consider the effective gas and aqueous saturations normalized by total fluid phase saturation implicitly affected by the dynamic formation and dissociation of hydrates.

Opioid withdrawal is a liability of chronic opioid use and misuse, impacting people who use prescription or illicit opioids. Hyperactive autonomic output underlies many of the aversive withdrawal symptoms that make it difficult to discontinue chronic opioid use. The locus coeruleus (LC) is an important autonomic centre within the brain with a poorly defined role in opioid withdrawal.

Mortality in patients receiving renal replacement therapy in South Korea.

Background: This study analyzed data from the end-stage renal disease patient registry collected by the Korean Society of Nephrology to explore trends in mortality among dialysis patients from 2001 to 2022.

Methods: Mortality was analyzed in two ways: firstly, using the annual mortality rate; and secondly, by assessing survivability after a certain period of time since the initiation of dialysis. Additionally, we categorized the causes of death by disease group annually to observe how the proportions changed.

This study found that Rolled Fine Striped (RFS), a Chromodomain Helicase DNA-binding 3 (CHD3)/Mi-2 subfamily protein, regulates vascular development in rice by affecting the initiation and development of primordia.

Prevalence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unclassified, as Estimated Using the Revised Porto Criteria, among Korean Pediatric Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Purpose: Few studies have reported the prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease unclassified (IBDU) among Korean pediatric IBD (PIBD) population. To address this gap, we used two tertiary centers and nationwide population-based healthcare administrative data to estimate the prevalence of Korean pediatric IBDU at the time of diagnosis.

Methods: We identified 136 patients aged 2-17 years with newly diagnosed IBD (94 Crohn's disease [CD] and 42 ulcerative colitis [UC]) from two tertiary centers in Korea between 2005 and 2017.
