Revisiting Artifacts of Kohn-Sham Density Functionals for Biosimulation.

We revisit the problem of unphysical charge density delocalization/fractionalization induced by the self-interaction error of common approximate Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory functionals on simulation of small to medium-sized proteins in a vacuum. Aside from producing unphysical electron densities and total energies, the vanishing of the HOMO-LUMO gap associated with the unphysical charge delocalization leads to an unphysical low-energy spectrum and catastrophic failure of most popular solvers for the KS self-consistent field (SCF) problem. We apply a robust quasi-Newton SCF solver [ 2024, 26, 6557] to obtain solutions for some of these difficult cases.

Cutaneous melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer with a high propensity for distant metastasis. Peritoneal metastasis from cutaneous malignant melanoma is extremely rare and associated with a low five-year overall survival rate. This report reviews a case of a 78-year-old man with peritoneal carcinomatosis after a wide local excision of a T1a invasive malignant melanoma of the scalp 10 months prior.

Inter-facility transfers for burn patients with concomitant traumatic injuries.

Burn patients with concomitant traumatic injuries suffer increased morbidity and mortality. Complex care coordination is necessary for these patients, and the prevalence of resulting inter-facility transfers has not yet been quantified by literature. This study examined the outcomes for traumatically injured burn patients to identify the occurrence of trauma system transfers in this group.

Introduction: Based on recommendations by CMS elective surgery was stopped during the first wave of COVID-19. Despite hospitals being open for emergent surgery, there were some studies that showed a decrease in surgical volume.

Methods: A retrospective analysis for all surgeries from 185 affiliated hospitals from the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020 to May 2020) and as a comparison the previous year, March 2019 to May 2019 were obtained.

Gasoline emissions contain high levels of pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), which are associated with several health outcomes. Prominent B-Cell Signature Differentiates Discoid from Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus.

Although B cells account for a significant proportion of the lymphocytic infiltrate in discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), their contribution to pathogenesis is unknown. In this study, we compare the immune landscape of 17 subjects with DLE with that of 21 subjects with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus using transcriptomic and histologic analyses of lesional skin. A few of the subjects (3 of 17 subjects with DLE, and 5 of 21 subjects with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus) had concomitant systemic lupus erythematosus.
