Steroidal saponins in Paris polyphylla featuring complicated sugar chains exhibit notable biological activities, but the sugar chain biosynthesis is still not fully understood. Here, we identified a 4'-O-rhamnosyltransferase (UGT73DY2) from P. polyphylla, which catalyzes the 4'-O-rhamnosylation of polyphyllins V and VI, producing dioscin and pennogenin 3-O-β-chacotrioside, respectively.

A series of dinuclear Ir(III) complexes have been constructed for enhanced photodynamic and photothermal therapy (PDT and PTT) for cisplatin-resistant non-small-cell lung cancer. They enter cells via caveolar endocytosis, target mitochondria but not nuclear, generate both singlet oxygen and superoxide anion, and release heat when exposed to infrared (IR) irradiation, thus inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS)-associated cell disruption and thermal ablation. The IR-generated ROS can further activate caspases, triggering apoptosis.

Laser ignition of primary explosives presents more reliable alternative to traditional electrical initiation methods. However, the commercial initiator lead azide (LA) requires a high-power density laser to detonate, with the minimum laser initiation energy (E) of 2402 mJ. Currently, the laser-ignitable metal complex-based igniters still suffer from weak detonation capabilities and high E values.

A transdermal drug delivery cream, which is non-invasive and painless, containing a liposome-encapsulated Ru(II) complex (LipoRu) is created for the treatment of skin cancer. This formulation capitalizes on the synergistic antitumor effects of two-photon excited photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and chemotherapy. LipoRu exhibits effective tumor accumulation, efficient cellular uptake, pH-sensitive and infrared-accelerated release, and dual localization to the nucleus and mitochondria.

The intricate interplay between the human oral microbiome and systemic health is increasingly being recognized, particularly in the context of central nervous system pathologies such as glioblastoma. In this study, we aimed to elucidate gender-specific differences in the salivary microbiome of glioma patients by utilizing 16S rRNA sequencing data from publicly available salivary microbiome datasets. We conducted comprehensive bioinformatics analysis, encompassing quality control, noise reduction, species classification, and microbial community composition analysis at various taxonomic levels.

  • A reader pointed out that the western blot data for the MMP‑9 experiment in Fig. 4 was very similar to the total‑Akt data in Fig. 6.
  • The authors re-examined their original data and found that Fig. 6 was incorrectly assembled.
  • A corrected version of Fig. 6 is provided, but the changes do not alter the paper's overall conclusions, and the authors apologize for any confusion.

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the function of novel circular RNA hsa_circ_0036683 (circ-36683) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: RNA sequencing was used to screen out differentially expressed miRNAs. Expression levels of miR-4664-3p and circ-36683 were evaluated in lung carcinoma cells and tissues by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).

Background: Ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma, accounting for about 90% of ovarian cancers, is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to suboptimal treatment outcomes. Given the malignant nature of the disease, effective biomarkers for accurate prediction and personalized treatment remain an urgent clinical need.

Methods: In this study, we analyzed the microbial contents of 453 ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma and 68 adjacent non-cancerous samples.

A planar conjugated ligand functionalized with bithiophene and its Ru(II), Os(II), and Ir(III) complexes have been constructed as single-molecule platform for synergistic photodynamic, photothermal, and chemotherapy. The complexes have significant two-photon absorption at 808 nm and remarkable singlet oxygen and superoxide anion production in aqueous solution and cells when exposed to 808 nm infrared irradiation. The most potent Ru(II) complex Ru7 enters tumor cells via the rare macropinocytosis, locates in both nuclei and mitochondria, and regulates DNA-related chemotherapeutic mechanisms intranuclearly including DNA topoisomerase and RNA polymerase inhibition and their synergistic effects with photoactivated apoptosis, ferroptosis and DNA cleavage.

Article Synopsis
  • Vascular calcification (VC) is a key predictor of cardiovascular issues, but there's no effective treatment to stop its progression; this study investigates the effects of capsaicin (Cap), a component from spicy peppers, on VC.
  • Using mouse models and cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), the research found that capsaicin significantly reduced calcification and improved related biomarkers.
  • The study provides evidence that capsaicin works by activating the TRPV1 receptor and inhibiting the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, suggesting potential new approaches to using dietary spicy foods to prevent VC progression.

Endometrial cancer, a leading gynecological malignancy, is profoundly influenced by the uterine microbiota, a key factor in disease prognosis and treatment. Our study underscores the distinct microbial compositions in endometrial cancer compared to adjacent non-cancerous tissues, revealing a dominant presence of p_ in cancerous tissues as opposed to p_ in surrounding areas. Through comprehensive analysis, we identified 485 unique microorganisms in cancer tissues, 26 of which correlate with patient prognosis.

Background: Ischemic stroke significantly contributes to high mortality and disability rates. Cerebral edema is a common consequence of ischemic stroke and can lead to aggravation or even death. Current treatment strategies are limited to decompressive craniectomy and the intravascular administration of hypertonic drugs, which have significant side effects.

Currently, the quest for more renewable and biodegradable materials is a scientific priority to address the problems of petroleum-based plastics are difficult to degrade. In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) have been used as a template and four morphologies of CNC-ZnO nanocomposites were prepared via a hydrothermal method, and CNC-ZnO/polylactic acid (PLA) composite films were obtained by solution casting. We find that CNC-ZnO nanocomposites as heterogeneous nucleating agents improved the crystallinity and the film with flower-like CNC-ZnO was improved by 2.

Single-component semiconductors with photoresponse to full solar spectrum are highly desirable to simplify the device structure of commercial photodetectors and to improve solar conversion or photocatalytic efficiency but remain scarce. This work reports bottom-up photosynthesis of an air-stable radical semiconductor using BiI and a photochromism-active benzidine derivative as a photosensitive functional motif. This semiconductor shows photoconductivity to full solar spectrum contributed by radical and non-radical forms of the benzidine derivative.
