A clinical isolate, R131, was isolated from the peritoneal swab of a patient who suffered from ruptured appendicitis with abscess and gangrene in Hong Kong in 2018. Cells are facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, Gram-positive coccobacilli. Colonies were small, grey, semi-translucent, low convex and alpha-haemolytic.

Background: Sexual well-being significantly impacts the overall quality of life for individuals with and without intellectual disabilities. Notably, parents play a pivotal role in influencing their children's sexual development, and their attitudes towards this topic are shaped by Chinese sociocultural values.

Methods: This study employed Interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the experiences and attitudes of five individuals with intellectual disabilities and seven parents/caregivers regarding the sexual needs of their adult offspring with intellectual disabilities.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a hereditary cardiovascular condition marked by heart muscle thickening, fibrosis, and myocardial disorders. It is often inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Symptoms include dyspnea, fatigue, palpitations, dizziness, syncope, and an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD).

Context: The substantial increase in the number of active and inactive-state CB receptor experimental structures has provided opportunities for CB drug discovery using various structure-based drug design methods, including the popular end-point methods for predicting binding free energies-Molecular Mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM/PBSA) and Molecular Mechanics/Generalized Born Surface Area (MM/GBSA). In this study, we have therefore evaluated the performance of MM/PBSA and MM/GBSA in calculating binding free energies for CB receptor. Additionally, with both MM/PBSA and MM/GBSA being known for their highly individualized performance, we have evaluated the effects of various simulation parameters including the use of energy minimized structures, choice of solute dielectric constant, inclusion of entropy, and the effects of the five GB models.

Background: The increasing number of semi-invasive pain therapies in knee osteoarthritis poses challenges in decision-making. This review aimed to simultaneously compare established intra-articular therapies with newer peri-articular therapies and explore effect modifiers.

Methods: Randomized controlled trials were searched from five electronic databases without date or language restrictions.

Article Synopsis
  • - Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a painful condition treated through various surgical methods, including microvascular decompression (MVD) and stereotactic radiosurgery such as Gamma Knife.
  • - MVD offers substantial long-term relief but has varying recurrence rates, while GKRS provides good initial pain relief but may require repeat procedures over time.
  • - The review stresses the need for personalized treatment plans and careful patient selection to improve outcomes, as each surgical option has its own risks and effectiveness depending on the patient's specific situation.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a prevalent heart muscle disease characterized by ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction, leading to severe heart failure (HF) and often requiring heart transplantation (HTx). This systematic review aimed to synthesize information regarding the role of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in managing HF patients due to DCM. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases for studies published between 2014 and 2024.

Introduction: is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family of , a common pathogen in aquaculture animals, However, studies on its impact on (mud crabs) are limited. In this study, we isolated SWS from dead mud crab during a disease outbreak in a Hong Kong aquaculture farm, which caused up to 70% mortality during summer.

Methods: Experimental infection and histopathology were used to investigate the pathogenicity of SWS in and validate Koch's postulates.

Computational target fishing plays an important role in target identification, particularly in drug discovery campaigns utilizing phenotypic screening. Numerous approaches exist to predict potential targets for a given ligand, but true targets may be inconsistently ranked. More advanced simulation methods may provide benefit in such cases by reranking these initial predictions.

Objective: This study aimed to characterize the changing landscape of circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineages in the local community of Hong Kong throughout 2022. We examined how adjustments to quarantine arrangements influenced the transmission pattern of Omicron variants in a city with relatively rigorous social distancing measures at that time.

Methods: In 2022, a total of 4684 local SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sequenced using the Oxford Nanopore GridION sequencer.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional culture methods for diagnosing infections take a long time, but Nanopore 16S rRNA gene sequencing could speed up bacterial identification in infected fluids.
  • A study tested the effectiveness of Nanopore 16S using various samples, comparing results from different analysis pipelines—Epi2me, Emu, and NanoCLUST—to traditional culturing methods.
  • Emu showed the best accuracy in identifying bacteria, correctly classifying 97.7% of monomicrobial samples, while challenges persisted in dealing with polymicrobial samples, and the method could provide results within 6 hours.

  • The study focuses on the impact of hormone therapy on fertility in transgender girls and emphasizes the need for counseling on fertility preservation prior to treatment.
  • Eight out of 23 participants were able to provide sperm samples for cryopreservation, with all showing at least one secondary sex characteristic.
  • The findings suggest that early referral for fertility preservation can lead to successful results, highlighting a significant proportion of transgender girls can preserve fertility despite undergoing puberty blockade.

Purpose: Advancing age is one of the strongest risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA). DNA methylation-based measures of epigenetic age acceleration may provide insights into mechanisms underlying OA.

Methods: We analyzed data from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study in a subset of 671 participants ages 45-69 years with no or mild radiographic knee OA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the integration of genomic data across NHS laboratories in England and Wales, highlighting variations in data structure, quality, and ease of local assembly for cancer susceptibility gene testing.
  • A survey of 51 clinical scientists revealed significant differences in how variant data is transferred, formatted, and classified within Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) across the participating labs.
  • The findings indicate that current workflows are often inefficient and prone to errors due to their manual nature, suggesting that implementing recommended improvements could streamline data submission processes for better national and international collaboration.

Duncan et al. reviewed the response to growth hormone stimulation testing after priming in peripubertal children. The concern is that there is little research documenting the response to growth hormone treatment in patients with sex hormone primed growth hormone stimulation testing and those unprimed.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in childhood is defined by a stroke occurring after 28 days of life to 18 years of age. This presents a distinct clinical challenge in terms of both diagnosis and treatment. The overlapping clinical presentations of acute ischemic stroke and its mimics such as migraine with aura, seizure with Todd paresis and encephalitis renders early accurate diagnosis of this time-sensitive condition difficult, with a change in the final diagnosis in up to 40% of patients.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to establish the causal effects of lowering sclerostin, target of the antiosteoporosis drug romosozumab, on atherosclerosis and its risk factors.

Methods: A genome-wide association study meta-analysis was performed of circulating sclerostin levels in 33,961 European individuals. Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to predict the causal effects of sclerostin lowering on 15 atherosclerosis-related diseases and risk factors.
