Pasteurellosis is a common zoonotic infection that occurs after an animal bite or scratch (B/S). We compared the clinical features of six patients with non-B/S pasteurellosis with those of 14 patients with B/S infections. Pasteurella multocida was identified with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry in all six non-B/S infections, whereas 13 of the 14 B/S infections were identified with diagnostic kits.

Assessment of risk-adjusted antibiotic use (AU) is recommended to evaluate antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). We aimed to compare the amount and diversity of AU and antimicrobial susceptibility of nosocomial isolates between a 266-bed community hospital (CH) and a 963-bed tertiary care hospital (TCH) in Japan. The days of therapy/100 bed days (DOT) was measured for four classes of broad-spectrum antibiotics predominantly used for hospital-onset infections.

Background: Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are anti-diabetic drugs for type 2 diabetes that lower blood glucose levels and body weight. It is of special interest that SGLT2 inhibitors also improve liver metabolism and fatty liver. Liver is an important organ in regulation of energy metabolism, but the metabolic action of SGLT inhibitors in liver remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatricians need solid pharmacologic knowledge to effectively study drug behavior (PK/PD) and treat children with antibiotics, but data on this is often limited due to challenges in conducting these studies in kids.
  • To address this data gap, promoting population PK/PD analysis is essential, as it allows researchers to work with sparse data from individual patients and tailor treatment dosages more accurately.
  • The summary highlights current pediatric PK/PD studies on antimicrobials in Japan, emphasizing the critical role of population PK/PD analysis in clinical and research settings.

Evaluation of the binding and uptake of an antibody in liver non-parenchymal cells (NPC), including liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, is important for revealing its pharmacokinetic (PK) behavior, since NPC has important roles in eliminating an antibody from the blood via the Fc fragment of IgG receptor IIB (FcγRIIB). However, there is currently no in vitro quantitative assay using NPC. This study reports on the development of a cell-based assay for evaluating the binding and uptake of such an antibody using liver NPC of mice and monkeys.

The 10-s grip and release is a method to evaluate hand dexterity. Current evaluations only visually determine the presence or absence of a disability, but experienced physicians may also make other diagnoses. In this study, we investigated a method for evaluating hand movement function by acquiring and analyzing fingertip data during a 10-s grip and release using a wearable sensor that can measure triaxial acceleration and strain.

Background: A trough concentration (C) ≥20 μg/mL of teicoplanin is recommended for the treatment of serious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. However, sufficient clinical evidence to support the efficacy of this target C has not been obtained. Even though the recommended high C of teicoplanin was associated with better clinical outcome, reaching the target concentration is challenging.

Empirical antifungal therapy is recommended in high-risk patients who have persistent febrile neutropenia (FN) despite broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. Based on high-quality evidence, most guidelines recommend caspofungin. The aim of this study was to clarify whether echinocandins, including micafungin, are associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients with persistent FN.

Empirical combination therapy with β-lactams and glycopeptides is recommended for patients with presumed staphylococcal bloodstream infection (BSI). While coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) remain susceptible to vancomycin, such isolates have become less susceptible to teicoplanin. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of teicoplanin in the treatment of BSI caused by methicillin-resistant CNS according to teicoplanin susceptibility.

Pancreatic ascites can occur in association with the rupture of a pseudocyst or the disruption of a pancreatic duct during the natural course of chronic pancreatitis. We report herein the successful treatment of three patients with pancreatic ascites by performing a surgical procedure after 4-6 weeks of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) proved ineffective. The principles of our surgical procedure for pancreatic ascites are as follows: (1) minimum pancreatic tissue is resected; (2) surgical intervention to repair leaking sites is not necessary; (3) pancreatic duct drainage is facilitated by an intestinal Roux-en-Y loop; (4) An external drainage tube is inserted through the Roux-en-Y loop into the main pancreatic duct.
