Purpose: To compare the survival rate (revision surgery) and clinical and radiologic outcomes of arthroscopic partial versus complete repair for large to massive rotator cuff tears over a minimum 10-year follow-up period.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent arthroscopic partial or complete repair of large to massive rotator cuff tears between 2008 and 2013, with minimum 10-year follow-up. Functional outcomes were measured using the visual analog scale pain score, Subjective Shoulder Value, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, University of California, Los Angeles shoulder score, and passive range of motion preoperatively and at the last follow-up.

The development of methods to detect and treat intracranial large-vessel occlusions (LVOs) has revolutionized the management of acute ischemic stroke. CT angiography (CTA) of the head and neck is effective in depicting LVOs and widely used in the evaluation of patients who have had a stroke. In previous animal model studies, we demonstrated the potential of rAAV2-sVEGFRv-1, which encodes a truncated variant of the alternatively spliced soluble version of VEGF receptor-1 (VEGFR1), as a human gene therapy for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Here, we elucidate in vitro some of the mechanisms by which rAAV2-sVEGFRv-1 exerts its therapeutic effects. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were infected with rAAV2-sVEGFRv-1 or a control virus vector in the presence of members of the VEGF family to identify potential binding partners via ELISA, which showed that VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and placental growth factor (PlGF) are all ligands of its transgene product.

The Na super ionic conductor (NASICON), which has outstanding structural stability and a high operating voltage, is an appealing material for overcoming the limits of low specific energy and larger volume distortion of sodium-ion batteries. In this study, to discover ideal NASICON cathode materials, a screening platform based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and machine learning (ML) is developed. A training database was generated utilizing the previous 124 545 electrode databases, and a test set of 3126 potential NASICON structures [NaMM'(PO)] with 27 dopants at the metal site and 6 dopants at the polyanion central site was constructed.

The sensitivity of NMR may be enhanced by more than four orders of magnitude dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (dDNP), potentially allowing real-time, analysis of chemical reactions. However, there has been no widespread use of the technique for this application and the major limitation has been the low experimental throughput caused by the time-consuming polarization build-up process at cryogenic temperatures and fast decay of the hyper-intense signal post dissolution. To overcome this limitation, we have developed a microfluidic device compatible with dDNP-MR spectroscopic imaging methods for detection of reactants and products in chemical reactions in which up to 8 reactions can be measured simultaneously using a single dDNP sample.

Misfolded protein aggregates may cause toxic proteinopathy, including autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease due to uromodulin mutations (ADTKD-UMOD), a leading hereditary kidney disease. There are no targeted therapies. Immune checkpoint blockade is effective for some patients with cancer, but most are refractory to current immunotherapies and new approaches are needed to overcome resistance. The protein tyrosine phosphatases PTPN2 and PTPN1 are central regulators of inflammation, and their genetic deletion in either tumour cells or immune cells promotes anti-tumour immunity. However, phosphatases are challenging drug targets; in particular, the active site has been considered undruggable.
