Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between diabetic retinal neurodegeneration (DRN), as quantified by optical coherence tomography (OCT), to the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR), progression of DR, and development of proliferative DR (PDR).

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study, including 385 eyes with no DR or nonproliferative DR at baseline. The thicknesses of the macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (m-GCIPL), macular retinal nerve fiber layer, and peripapillary RNFL (p-RNFL) were measured using Cirrus OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA).

Human height prediction based on genetic factors alone shows positive correlation, but predictors developed for one population perform less well when applied to population of different ancestries. In this study, we evaluated the utility of incorporating non-genetic factors in height predictors for the Han Chinese population in Taiwan. We analyzed data from 78,719 Taiwan Biobank (TWB) participants and 40,641 Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI) participants using genome-wide association study and multivariable linear regression least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) methods to incorporate genetic and non-genetic factors for height prediction.

The continuing emergence of immune evasive SARS-CoV-2 variants and the previous SARS-CoV-1 outbreak collectively underscore the need for broadly protective sarbecovirus vaccines. Targeting the conserved S2 subunit of SARS-CoV-2 is a particularly promising approach to elicit broad protection. Here, we describe a nanoparticle vaccine displaying multiple copies of the SARS-CoV-1 S2 subunit.

  • This study aimed to find out what factors contribute to sleep-related injuries (SRI) and persistent sleep-related injuries (pSRI) in patients with isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD).
  • A retrospective review of 388 iRBD patients showed that 83% reported a history of SRI, with some suffering severe injuries, and factors like depressive symptoms, alcohol consumption, and certain EMG activity were linked to these injuries.
  • Despite treatment, 18% of patients continued to experience pSRI over an average follow-up of 5.1 years, highlighting the need for better safety measures and targeted screening for those at risk.

Two-dimensional (2D) ion crystals may represent a promising path to scale up qubit numbers for ion trap quantum information processing. However, to realize universal quantum computing in this system, individually addressed high-fidelity two-qubit entangling gates still remain challenging due to the inevitable micromotion of ions in a 2D crystal as well as the technical difficulty in 2D addressing. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates between any ion pairs in a 2D crystal of four ions.

  • Genomic alterations in tumors significantly influence cancer progression and treatment response, with whole-genome sequencing (WGS) emerging as a viable alternative to traditional targeted panel sequencing (TPS) due to advancements in cost and technology.
  • A study involving 120 cancer patients evaluated the clinical utility of WGS and found that 79% received genomic reports quickly, with 72% of these reports offering clinically relevant information.
  • The insights gained from WGS helped in selecting tailored treatments and clinical trials based on identifying specific mutations, potentially enhancing precision oncology and suggesting routine integration of WGS in cancer management.

Drug targets are specific molecules in biological tissues and body fluids that interact with drugs. Drug target discovery is a key component of drug discovery and is essential for the development of new drugs in areas such as cancer therapy and precision medicine. Traditional in vitro or in vivo target discovery methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive, limiting the pace of drug discovery.

Cancer immunotherapies based on cytotoxic CD8 T lymphocytes (CTLs) are highly promising for cancer treatment. The specific interaction between T-cell receptors and peptide-MHC-I complexes (pMHC-I) on cancer cell membranes critically determines their therapeutic outcomes. However, the lack of appropriate endogenous antigens for MHC-I presentation disables tumor recognition by CTLs.

Background: The Murray law-based quantitative flow ratio (μFR) is an emerging technique that requires only 1 projection of coronary angiography with similar accuracy to quantitative flow ratio (QFR). However, it has not been validated for the evaluation of noninfarct-related artery (non-IRA) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) settings. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of μFR and the safety of deferring non-IRA lesions with μFR >0.

The unique virus-cell interaction in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated malignancies implies targeting the viral latent-lytic switch is a promising therapeutic strategy. However, the lack of specific and efficient therapeutic agents to induce lytic cycle in these cancers is a major challenge facing clinical implementation. We develop a synthetic transcriptional activator that specifically activates endogenous BZLF1 and efficiently induces lytic reactivation in EBV-positive cancer cells.

Background: The clinical application of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) for cardiac repair commenced with the epicardial delivery of engineered cardiac tissue; however, the feasibility of the direct delivery of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived CMs into the cardiac muscle layer, which has reportedly induced electrical integration, is unclear because of concerns about poor engraftment of CMs and posttransplant arrhythmias. Thus, in this study, we prepared purified human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiac spheroids (hiPSC-CSs) and investigated whether their direct injection could regenerate infarcted nonhuman primate hearts.

Methods: We performed 2 separate experiments to explore the appropriate number of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived CMs.
