Objectives: To investigate the application of the three-compartment restriction spectrum imaging (RSI) model, diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in predicting Ki-67 status in rectal carcinoma.

Methods: A total of 80 rectal carcinoma patients, including 47 high-proliferation (Ki-67 > 50%) cases and 33 low-proliferation (Ki-67 ≤ 50%) cases, underwent pelvic MRI were enrolled. Parameters derived from RSI (f, f, and f), DKI (MD and MK), and DWI (ADC) were calculated and compared between the two groups.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate changes in objective vision quality in mesopic environments in teenagers with myopia after wearing orthokeratology (OK) lenses.

Methods: This prospective clinical study included 45 patients (80 eyes) who received OK lenses at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University from March 2021 to September 2021. An Optical Path Difference-Scan III refractive power/corneal analyzer was used to determine the corneal topographic parameters (corneal e, corneal Q, surface asymmetry index (SAI), and surface regularity index (SRI)), higher-order aberrations (HOAs), axial length (AL) change, lens decentration, induced astigmatism, target power, and Strehl ratio (SR) in a mesopic visual environment after wearing OK lenses for 6 months.

Background: Dual antiplatelet treatment has been shown to lower the risk of recurrent stroke as compared with aspirin alone when treatment is initiated early (≤24 hours) after an acute mild stroke. The effect of clopidogrel plus aspirin as compared with aspirin alone administered within 72 hours after the onset of acute cerebral ischemia from atherosclerosis has not been well studied.

Methods: In 222 hospitals in China, we conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, two-by-two factorial trial involving patients with mild ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack (TIA) of presumed atherosclerotic cause who had not undergone thrombolysis or thrombectomy.

The hepatic SLC13A5/SLC25A1-ATP-dependent citrate lyase (ACLY) signaling pathway, responsible for maintaining the citrate homeostasis, plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Bempedoic acid (BA), an ACLY inhibitor commonly used for managing hypercholesterolemia, has shown promising results in addressing hepatic steatosis. This study aimed to elucidate the intricate relationships in processes of hepatic lipogenesis among SLC13A5, SLC25A1, and ACLY and to examine the therapeutic potential of BA in NAFLD, providing insights into its underlying mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • EE-Explorer is an AI system designed to triage eye emergencies and assist with primary diagnosis using metadata and images taken from smartphones.
  • It was developed through a validation study involving data from over 4,000 patients and was tested across various hospitals to assess its accuracy in classifying urgency levels and diagnosing conditions.
  • The results demonstrated high accuracy, outperforming human triage nurses, and indicated strong performance in both triage and diagnostic capabilities, suggesting its potential to improve access to care for patients with eye emergencies.

Purpose: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness among working-age adults. Although current intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies improve vision for many patients with DME, approximately half do not achieve the visual acuity required to drive. We therefore sought additional approaches to resolve edema and improve vision for these patients.

Background: Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked with daily hospitalization and mortality from acute coronary syndrome (ACS); however, the associations of subdaily (hourly) levels of criteria air pollutants with the onset of ACS and its subtypes have rarely been evaluated.

Methods: We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study among 1 292 880 patients with ACS from 2239 hospitals in 318 Chinese cities between January 1, 2015, and September 30, 2020. Hourly concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM), coarse particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O) were collected.

Background: Embryo selection with preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) may improve pregnancy outcomes after initial embryo transfer. However, it remains uncertain whether PGT-A improves the cumulative live-birth rate as compared with conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, controlled trial, we randomly assigned subfertile women with three or more good-quality blastocysts to undergo either PGT-A or conventional IVF; all the women were between 20 and 37 years of age.

Background: S-nitrosylation (SNO), a prototypic redox-based posttranslational modification, is involved in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to determine the role of SNO of MLP (muscle LIM protein) in myocardial hypertrophy, as well as the mechanism by which SNO-MLP modulates hypertrophic growth in response to pressure overload.

Methods: Myocardial samples from patients and animal models exhibiting myocardial hypertrophy were examined for SNO-MLP level using biotin-switch methods.

Diabetes nephropathy (DN) is characterized by abnormal interactions between kidney-infiltrating macrophages and glomerular mesangial cells. Recently, a novel cell-cell communication mediated by exosomes has gained attention. Exosomes are membrane-bound vesicles that contain a variety of molecules such as proteins, lipids, DNA, mRNA, and microRNAs.

Background and Purpose- China bears a heavy burden of stroke because of its large population of elderly people and the propensity for stroke. Previous studies have examined the association between air pollution and stroke mortality or hospital admission. However, the global evidence for adverse effects of air pollution on survival after stroke is scarce.

Purpose To investigate the diagnostic performance of two-dimensional (2D) shear-wave elastography (SWE) in chronic hepatitis B. Materials and Methods This prospective multicenter study from January 2015 to January 2016 was conducted at 12 hospitals and included 654 participants with chronic hepatitis B who had undergone liver biopsy and 2D SWE examination. Participants were divided into chronic infection and chronic hepatitis groups.

Objective: Pathological ocular neovascularization is a major cause of blindness. Increased dietary intake of ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) reduces retinal neovascularization and choroidal neovascularization (CNV), but ω-3 LCPUFA metabolites of a major metabolizing pathway, cytochrome P450 oxidase (CYP) 2C, promote ocular pathological angiogenesis. We hypothesized that inhibition of CYP2C activity will add to the protective effects of ω-3 LCPUFA on neovascular eye diseases.

In plants, clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is dependent on the function of clathrin and its accessory heterooligomeric adaptor protein complexes, ADAPTOR PROTEIN2 (AP-2) and the TPLATE complex (TPC), and is negatively regulated by the hormones auxin and salicylic acid (SA). The details for how clathrin and its adaptor complexes are recruited to the plasma membrane (PM) to regulate CME, however, are poorly understood. We found that SA and the pharmacological CME inhibitor tyrphostin A23 reduce the membrane association of clathrin and AP-2, but not that of the TPC, whereas auxin solely affected clathrin membrane association, in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana).

Context: Previous studies on the association between glucose fluctuations and oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus were all conducted in adults, and most study participants had type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: The study objective was to examine the association of glucose fluctuation and oxidative stress in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) across different phases.

Design: This was a case-control study.
